Hey guys - just curious more than anything. I was looking at the Kings capfriendly.com page and it showed dead space for Jeff Carter for this season and the next two. Didn't LA trade him to Pitt with only this year remaining on his contract?

I know he extended another two years but how is it possible LA has dead space into his new contract? Is it an error on the website or is something going completely over my head?

Website error, but good eye, we've all gone "What??" since extension day, haha.

For as much as people can tend to dismiss analytics (for whatever reasons or motivations), it's worth highlighting that teams that don't have research and development/analytics groups are in the minority in the NHL now. The Athletic has a good story on the Canadiens' push to build out a lacking analytics group under the new management:

How to build an analytics department: Montreal Canadiens (and others) prepare to join NHL's push into big data

For some background on Vollman's role (and Hayden Speak's role, as well):

Meet the new talents giving the Kings a complete package ahead of the NHL Draft

That quote you pulled was really interesting to me because his examples don't really hold much water. The Kings have yet to really graduate anyone they have drafted into a successful role at this point. The Leafs comment is also not that accurate, they say that the Leafs seem to always have late round talent to plug into their lineup, but the Leafs only have one regular player who fits that description in Engvall.

It's a bug, apologies for the confusion.

I've actually already made the code fix but it isn't live yet (should be live by Monday or Tuesday)

I reached out to them. Stated its a bug, they will fix.

And thank you very much for doing so, we greatly appreciate it, sometimes bugs can fly under the radar until somebody reaches out!

How dare you bring actual facts into this?!?!
I mean, if you’d rather use 2013-2014 versions of Regher-Mitchell-Greene who had 14-12-6 points respectively, and it’s makes you more comfortable with the argument, that’s more than fine.

The point remains, there is plenty of room for multiple defensemen who only play defense on a winning roster.

The Kings' drafting ability under an analytics influence is TBD since they only started that just 2 seasons ago. That's hardly enough time to pass judgment. I don't think anyone can deny that the Kings' draft hauls the past few years have been highly regarded by analysts, which is all we've got at this point.

Carolina is another example that wasn't expressly listed there that's had some success.

I mean being highly regarded by analysts doesn't mean a whole lot, especially when we are discussing the successes of drafts using analytics. Analysts can and do have biases. As for the Canes, I assume we are discussing the Waddell tenure, only 3 players have been drafted in that time frame to play any games in the NHL. Svechnikov was 2nd overall and Jarvis was a 13th overall pick. The only non lottery player to get any NHL games was Drury who was drafted in the 2nd round and he has played a grand total of 2 games so far(though he does have 2 goals).

Capfriendly glitched when they punched in Carter's extension.

Fingers crossed that is stays day to day

Hope so. The Kings are super thin on LD, without Edler and having to play Maatta every day. They still need to find an upgrade for Maatta.
There's gotta be someone else besides Chychrun and Chiarot out there. (if not worth their going price)

Young star players traded in their prime is always rare.

I'm just saying Chychrun's contractual status is not ideal and it's something that has to be taken into account.

Some trades for young defenseman that I can think of:

25 year old RFA Trouba for a 1st and Poink. Rangers were able to sign him to a 7 year deal.

19 year old Sergachev was traded straight up for Drouin.

20 year old Seth Jones to CBJ for Johansen

21 year old Dougie Hamilton to Calgary for a 1st and two 2nds.

I'd rather trade an equivalent asset for someone like Broberg than trade 4 quality assets for Chychrun.

Trouba trade doesn't fit your desire to be five+ years locked in.

In the Sergachev/Drouin trade, Drouin was the main piece, not Sergachev. He was a prospect. It wasn't quite straight up either, it was Serg and a 2nd for Drouin and a 6th. Serg was a 9th overall pick traded one year after he was drafted, not much different from dealing Turcotte.

The other two deals I'd so in a heartbeat. If we can get Chycrun for a 1st and 2 2nds we should be all over that. Sounds like that's not on the table though.

More recent examples are Ristolainen for a 1st, 3rd and Robert Hagg and the Chicago/CLB Seth Jones deals. A little older than Chychrun sure, but also far less term on their deals and they cost a 1st plus. I'd rather Chychrun than Risto and one year of him costs a 1st, a 3rd and a quality 4-6 D-man.

The best hope is to find a Ryan Ellis type swap but that's not the same age range as Chychrun.

Carson Soucy, come on down! What’s the price on him? Like a B-prospect and a pick?

I didn't say that. I said a long term contract or rights controlled contract (RFA).

Okay, but the second round pick is a small concession. It was basically Sergachev for Drouin. I agree it would be like dealing Turcotte.

Considering Chychrun's terrible season, his contract, and the fact that he's really only had one great season, I just don't see any team giving up what the Coyotes want. A 1st and two 2nds is reasonable, but probably not something the Coyotes would listen to. I would probably do it.

If he has another bad season next year, his value will plummet. If he returns to form, they can keep asking for the moon.

I would look to trade someone like Turcotte for an equivalent defensive prospect. A young LHD on the cusp of the NHL. I would prefer this route over Chychrun.

Equivalent defensive prospect would be fine. It also falls into the core age range.

Yup...Good move for Vegas. McNabb at a cheap cap hit for 3 years. Interesting on how they will move cap out to fit Jack, thinking they get an IR contract or 2.

Having signed a 3 year extension, McNabb has a quantifiable value in a trade to the Knights. Just saying.
