If you were to see the standings on this day, April 3rd, (with a 38-23-10 record) back on October 28, when the Kings were 1-5-1, this would only be possible, if roughly 3 or more were true.
1. Quick and / or Petersen were having a career year.
2. Byfield would come back from his broken ankle in late December and be having a stellar rookie
year, with about 15 goals and 30 points by this date, April 3.
3. Arvidsson would be returning to a 30 goal status.
4. Kopitar would be in top form, Selke year and 75 points by this date.
5. Doughty would be having his best year in 3-4 years, at Norris level.
6. The PP would be in the top 25%
7. The PK would be in the top 25%
8. Another rookie, as in one of: Vilardi, Kupari, Turcotte, Fagemo would be producing about 15 goals / 25+ points.
9. There would likely be only 1-3 minor injuries ALL YEAR.
10. The Kings would have acquired another top player pre-trade-deadline, like Chychrun or Bertuzzi level
player, that has helped to propel the team since February.
11. Iafallo would have continued his early success and be at 25 goals / 50 points by now.
Answers:
1. they have both played reasonably well, but both sporadic.
2, Byfield still looks lost at times and still much a work in progress
3. Arvidsson has been great, but slowed TWICE, by covid and then the lower body injury
4. Kopitar is no longer selke level, but has had a good season, but far from his best
5. Doughty has been great, but now missed about half the season
6. PP is coming around, but still ranks 5th worse - even behind the Kraken!
7. PK 9th worse. Trending up though
8. Vilardi 2 goals in 17 games...played most of yr with Reign. Kupari has had flashes, but at 11 pts in 48 games. Turcotte has been injured half the yr and with the Reign. Fagemo 25 goals with the Reign
9. There have been about 10 injuries - several pretty serious
10. Nope. unless you consider Stetcher making an impact in a few weeks.
11. Nope. He fell off and had 0 goals in 22 games and only 2 goals and 5 PP points all year.
None of these things have happened. In many cases, it's been not even close to any of these happening.
Consider Doughty has never had any serious injuries and has had 2 this year. The entire defense corp has often been made up of players with less than 100 NHL games experience.
How can this team be behind the Flames by only 3 points?
