I just had a religious experience.

I had typed out a trade thread proposal on my phone involving the kings and ducks. (Pretty much Gibson and Beaulieu for futures and Petersen)

It must have been bad because it vanished before posting it.

The Lord works in mysterious ways!! :eek3:

It was an idea. I didn't say it was a good idea.

You can blame the defense or goaltending all night long, but the forwards were as a group completely irresponsible.

The Kings are clearly capable of playing some high end hockey - that first period last night (sans the 2 goals from the Jets) was some of the best hockey i've seen them play in the past couple of years.

It's been a tough early schedule and there have been some critical defensive lapses that we really didn't see the team make last year. I'm noticing so many occasions this year where I'm almost screaming at the TV when they don't just make the safe play and get it out of the d-zone (like Lizotte last night when he's trying to be a hero instead of getting the puck to Clarke). Danault also made an uncharacteristically bad play that led to a goal. Lemieux and Kempe with bad penalties at the worst time. Fiala is having some defensive lapses and bad decisions. Goaltending has not come up big when it has been needed.

I think it's pretty obvious that Vilardi needs to be elevated to the 1st line. Clarke needs more minutes. We need an actual LHD that can play hard-nosed, stay at home hockey instead of trying to convert a RHD with defensive issues. Fiala needs to be moved off of Kopitar's line. Rosen is totally right that Kopi needs to be with a very predictable player.

Blake has some really tough decisions to make. It's still early in the season and I'd like to re-assess after about 20 games. If the Kings regress and don't make the playoffs this year, Todd should definitely be out.

I don't know if I change any deployments for Vilardi right now, I just get him more minutes. I certainly wouldn't even consider putting him back at center. Yeah, LD is huge right now, having one on their backhand on a team struggling to get it out is an awful idea.

Upon Iafallo's return I'd put Kopitar with him and Arty, but that's just me. I'd also put Fiala with Vilardi and Byfield.

I wouldn't expect Blake to show TMac the door until next season, if he is considering it at all. Given this core's history with coaches, you can tell that TMac has a much larger leash than most that have come before. TMac has definitely some glaring issues to address and mistakes have certainly been made, but there are some positive things he has headed and brought in and unless there is a colossal collapse this year, I can't see Blake taking it out on TMac.

Although I think TMac's longevity is at stake, he is signed through next season so alternately, if there is no step forward, if the Kings don't go deep in the playoffs this season or possibly next, I think Blake will part with him and not re-sign him.

Kopitar hasn't been bad necessarily, but he is now largely ineffective, clearly a couple of steps slower now, and no longer has the elite gear to do anything on his own and also no longer has the creativity to work with dynamic wingers if he ever had the ability... It is time to explore other options at 1C, LA literally has the biggest logjam at center in the league. There is no excuse not to explore their center depth. I think they need to try some prospects up there, Kopitar is now a 2C at best, and Danault is one of the very best 2/3C in the league so having him on the 3rd line would be a godsend and was the original plan with his signing. It is sink or swim time for some of these prospects. Kopitar and Fiala are a team worst -5 and need to be broken up. It is time for Byfield and company to take some steps and get some experience on the big stage for better or worse.

Vilardi is looking as legit as it gets. I don't think they should try him at center and just keep him on wing which further exacerbates the logjams all around, but there is no question that he needs more ice time and opportunity to shine. He is getting it done no matter who his linemates are and is developing that "it" factor. Don't mess with it, continue to grow it.

The defense is glaring and I think is a bigger problem than goaltending. There isn't a whole lot you can do on the goaltending front unless a drastic trade is made with Petersen. Quick is giving it his all and is good enough, but the defense is what is failing this team. If it the team can't win with Quick in net playing well then it isn't going to win regardless. This is going to fall on the coaches and ultimately Blake so I expect them to address this first otherwise it would absolutely be the reason to cause them to fall on their swords.

Is there anything to the rumors (LHD!) Ryan Johnson of U of Minn will sign with the Kings next Summer?
He is in his 4th yr and #1 31 OA Buff pick 2019. He could make the Kings, faster than Buf, plus Craig Johnson is his dad. Ryan was born in Irvine.

Is it possible to do a defense/goalie swap with Ontario? LOL. On a serious note, it's good to see them doing well and Copley/Villalta both performing admirably so far. Although, I think much of it is due to the consistency and effort of the D-men.

Kempe and Fiala we're clicking together, Fiala is not the problem here. Though Vilardi has earned it

Hope that last line doesn't mean Kaliyev is out next game, he just had two pretty decent games, including a PP goal.

I'd be surprised if he were - they seem to like that line with him/Lemieux/Lizotte. Realistically, my assumption is that JAD would come out when Byfield is back, dropping Lizotte to L4

And for as much as I can't stand Todd, these lines make sense fit wise. Would be a Arty/Arvi switch but that's it

I misread the lines anyway lol, for some reason thought that was a line of extras.

Oy, Lizotte at 3C really sucks given how many centers we've drafted over the past six years. I love Lizotte, it's nothing against him, he just really should stay at 4C.

As an aside, I bit the bullet and subscribed to Jon Rosen's The Forum Report, and good lord, it's nice having great written Kings content again. If you can afford it, I'd highly suggest subscribing. Some really cool advanced metrics and stuff too.

Lizotte, like Derek Armstrong before him, is a real indication of the depth of a team. The higher the line they are playing on, the more trouble the team is in.

It really is fantastic but I'll admit I'm a big Rosen homer.

Forcing Fiala to the third line I doubt would yield anything too great, though makes our bottom 6 more potent. The answer is the toughest for any coach to face and actually do, but it is to move Kopitar. While Kempe and Fiala weren't amazing together, they weren't what was holding the line back. It sucks to deal with an aging face of the franchise, but if Kopitar was on the third line he would instantly become the best 3rd line center in the league and much more potent against bottom 6 competition. Teams would be split on who do defend and face.

We just need to bite the bullet at this point and demote Kopitar, throw someone like Byfield up there and give him Fiala and Kempe or Kaliyev. I bet if you ice Fiala-Byfield-Kaliyev, a goal is scored within the first three shifts.

I'm willing to take that bet.....if it happens.
