agreed- but isnt this a bit of chicken/egg? We see the debate with Spence here...

Using EA Sports rankings, Durzi is 85 offense but 35 defense. Spence is more like 75 on both.
Most teams will sacrifice the offense for stronger defense all day long.

Durzi should be 5th/6th dman who gets PP2 time- tmac seems to think hes a top 4 and idea candidate for the PK we all know is ludicrous. Throw in Clarke looking like a potential phenom and Spence- Kings keeping Durzi over Roy/Spence/Clarke would be like signing Peterson to a long term deal.
Durzi’s reads on the PK are almost comically bad, coupled with his horrid foot speed and his season long lull in balls has turned him into a liability on the PK.

I could stomach him in the lineup as a PP2 option who gets sheltered minutes on the 3rd pair, but his deployment of late is atrocious.

Durzi has the same amount of points as Evan Bouchard who is getting noticed for his contribution since Barrie was traded. Durzi in 10 less games. Bouchard has a better +/- but a lot of oilers stats are inflated thanks to mcjebus.

Right, which is why I pointed out in the rest of my post that we were already losing by multiple goals in the referenced games before Durzi was on the ice for a goal against. I'm not arguing that he isn't poor defensively, I'm arguing that in that series, Durzi's varying ice time was a response to the score, not the other way around.

Durzi is a team worst -11 ... lets compare him to MikeyAndo +20 who obviously plays harder matchups... he is a liability any way you slice it.

Using +/- to gauge......anything is....laughable at best...Danault is 3rd worst with a -9....he must be a brutal defensive center.....said no one....ever.

Its a fine stat when you compare it to another defender on the same team over time. Also Danault faces the toughest competition while Durzi faces the weakest on average.

I say give Laferriere the last game...in for JAD. Why not? JAD has been ok, but not as good as he was, that one stretch. Laferriere will be pumped and adrenaline alone, could help him.
If they were going to give Laf a game, a vet should come out of the lineup for rest. Not JAD.

Give Lizotte a game off. Dude looks spent. He's beat up as hell.

JAD has 7 even strength goals in 46 games. While only playing 10min a night. Iafallo has 7, Moore has 6, Kupari 3, Byfield 2.

Having these key players out of the lineup for a period of time has really helped me come to some conclusions about Kings players:

1. Anderson - So glad we locked him up long-term. He is a critical piece to this blueline and definitely Captain material. Did you guys see pregame how Lizotte and others were messing with him? The team, coaches and fans love this guy. Totally different team with him out of the lineup. He covers up so many mistakes.

2. Kempe - I've spoken to a few people who think this guy is expendable. I disagree. He is the best goal scorer on the team and has elevated himself to be accountable to the team and defense. Currently sits at +22 for the team lead. Key piece.

3. Fiala - This guy is one of the most critical pieces to the teams in terms of that dynamic element/creativity. He's just so shifty/strong on his skates and can really execute those cross-seam passes. Powerplay just gets so stagnant without him.

4. Vilardi - Last year I wouldn't have said this, but he has been so clutch with his scoring this year. He has the ability to be in close (stick handle in a phone booth), redirect shots and just score some really amazing goals. Also a key part of our ability to roll 2 strong powerplay units.

5. Gavrikov - I had no idea this is the kind of player we were getting after watching him for the past few weeks. Just goes to show how rough the Columbus team is right now. He always seems to be in the right spot, can play tough and boy did I not expect how offensively gifted he is.

6. Korpisalo - Outside of that one crap game, he has been exactly what this team has needed. Lump Copley in here too, but this guy seems like he can fit the bill for us in terms of what we need. For the $, I like this tandem a lot. Losing Quick really stung us all, but the success of these two has really meant a lot down the stretch.

7. Durzi - Still a lot of mixed feelings. I love his intensity/energy/offensive instincts, but I think the team suffers more with his defensive play. He seems to have picked this up more lately. If he's a 3rd pairing guy and you find him the right LHD, then maybe you give him a shot. I still think you trade him and bring up Clarke next year. Not sure if Bjornfot is the answer on LHD, but you gotta feel pretty good if you're rolling Anderson/Gavrikov.

8. Byfield - I think a lot of us are wondering if he keeps taking more steps forward into the next couple of years. You can see the potential and it just feels like once he really figures out how to sustain this over the course of a season, a couple key goals will really do a ton for his confidence.

9. Kopitar - Washed? Not hardly. Guy is so durable/consistent and plays the right way. It's amazing how much more effective he is when Fiala/Vilardi are playing. There are so many scoring threats and the coaching staff has made him more of a shooter this year. Love it.

For the offseason:

Goal #1 has got to be to figure out how to sign Gavrikov and Korpisalo. If Blake can somehow manage to figure out a way to make a trade or free up some salary, even better. Walker does not appear to have a spot on this team. I would be surprised if Edler plays another year.

You gotta like this team's chances to make another deep Stanley run here. It's tough when you have the likes of Colorado/Edmonton/Boston that you are competing against, but we have a pretty solid core when healthy.

Durzi gets a lot of hate and is a bit chaotic but he produces too. You shelter him and create a PP specialist.

On the whole, he often punches above his weight but he has done relatively well.

I doubt he gets extended in LA just due to Clarke. Clarke still needs to prove it but writing is on the wall for Durzi imho.

PP specialists are worthless when they’re a train wreck the rest of the game. How many minutes of PP time do teams get per game? And how many of those PP minutes does one player play? He’s not even a PP specialist since his arsenal is limited. He has no slap shot. Durzi is the guy who needs to go this summer. He makes the team worse. I don’t care about his character. You can find character in a million different places.

This team wont go far this year.
Blake only did half the job. He brought in two good solutions in Gav and Korpi.

But the depth at LHD is still a joke, one injury puts us straight back into Durzi left handed hell.
Still have to throw Edler's corpse out there night after night. A variety of players who could have solved this problem were acquired by our competitors for 4th and 5th round picks.
Total lack of grit or truculence was not addressed at all. McEwen failtrade shows Blake doesnt care about that aspect, this is a problem culturally now and above all else will see the door open for a quick exit.

Todd. He hasnt taken anyone out of the 1st round in a while now. Retread. Old boys network, joke of a product. Unable to improvise or adapt in-game, terrible overtime manager. Todd hasnt won a division title since he was gifted the Sharks roster more than a decade ago.

Korpisalo extension : Towards the end of the video.

Spoiler alert – nothing much said. He's been a good fit, there have been short conversations on both sides, but don't want to talk extension until off-season while the playoffs are around the corner.

I agree with most of what you said. Blake must address our lack of a power/nasty forward. We should go after Josh Anderson. We will also need to address our second line center position. Get a LHD, shed some cap and we should be contenders.

Well thought out. Absolutely agree with your write ups and assessments.

Just wish Blake would have let Moore walk instead of signing him long term. That money would have looked good in Gavrikov’s pocket.

Seriously what happened to Durzi’s feistiness from last season? I feel like the dude isn’t talking or getting in anyone’s face like he did last year. His offense and his balls were the reasons to overlook his horrible defense, now with just the offense I don’t think it’s enough to overlook the defense anymore.
Not sure what happened. He certainly got away from a strength in his game. But after his bout last game, here's hoping he's fully back!
