Confirmed with Link: LA Kings @LAKings Welcome to Los Angeles, Phillip Danault!

Guy Carboneau Danault put up 1 goal and 4 points in 22 playoff games. And he was a -1. He plays 14-16 minutes a game, about the same as Vilardi last season.

So he’s going to come to the Kings, give Kopitar a hand up, and put up 50 points. The guy couldn’t beat out Suzuki and KK for minutes at the end.

I’d love to be wrong here, but this makes little sense compared to what was supposedly “the plan” to get younger, faster more skilled.

5 friggin goals, and 24 points for Danault. And he was complaining about wanting to be a number 1 center in Montreal. I think he only scored 1 goal in the playoffs too. Another guy making big money that can't score. You happy now Drew?

The Kings are going to need Byfield, or Vilardi to step up and be the number 1 center pretty soon. I hope Blake asked their prospect centers if they are willing to play wing, because they have a lot of centers.

did Kopitar and his ppg two way play fall off a cliff. We still have a few years to start worrying about this.

Unless the plan, was already to shift Turcotte and Vilardi to wing, this makes little sense to me.

In a vacuum it’s not a terrible move. But the Kings have the best center prospects in the league, why are we trying to stunt their growth in anyway? With this signing and Kopitar you have what? Maybe 22 mins of ice time left for 3rd/4th line centers combined?

Not sure how I feel about this. Sounds like he’s a 3rd line centre making $5.5M. That’s a lot. Over 6 years? Woof.

Not to mention you’ve now got a sudden logjam with your prospects. Byfield, Turcotte, Vilardi, etc. Would have much rather Blake go out and offer Turcotte, another prospects and future 1st rounder for a legit #2 centre. Something like Lombardi did for Richards. Have a bad feeling about this signing…

Yep, and you're not supposed to have those guys signed to a contract.

and now let's return from fantasyland where the only contract that teams have are cheap and when the players are at their absolute peak!

That's the part I don't get either. He apparently left Montreal because he wanted a more offensive role, and the Kings have much better center depth than we do. For sure Byfield and Turcotte surpass him.

There's reasonable risk, and unreasonable risk.

I like Danault, but he will most likely end up like one of the above. I hope I'm wrong.

He turns 29 this season.

that's why high end #3C are worth though. look at backlund in Calgary.

difference is he is a centre and those are all wingers. Better to hitch your wagon to a center IMO

Why do you feel like he will end up as one of the above? Seems a bit premature to say that..like any player who signs a deal at this age is destined to become irrelevant after a couple years.

sounds like Blake went through his role this year and into the future. Big part of it will be to help groom the youth. I think this will help Byfield and Vialrdi (likely move to wing) and I think Turcotte also moves to wing.

Congrats that your grandparents saw a bunch of SCs when there were 6 teams. You've seen all of 3 -- and none in almost 30 years. You've seen none and your team has won none since expansion. You have no wins since the league went to 25+. We have 2 and recently. You must be bitter with no wins in nearly 30 years. Maybe will never get them now that the league is more than 6 and not tilted to Mtl winning. It's easy to beat your little sister in games.....but now with a full league you basically are irrelevant SC wise. Maybe the Habs can start a new Canada only league with 6 teams and you can start winning Cups again.

Dude, you came here to troll -- GTFO

I mean, my Grand parents weren't ever in a hockey playing nation, but... alright. I came here to talk hockey and instead got a bunch of jokers, so I gave jokes.

If your goal is to tell me my team isn't winning the cup this year, well... alright. Everybody in this city already knows that. You can insult the Habs all you want. We won a bunch of cups when the league had six teams. True. But you know what? The other five teams don't even come close to what we had. You can say the league was slanted in our favor - and that makes me laugh, because if you knew anything about Canada, you would know we are the black sheep of the nation. Habs had rights to local players, and the locals were better. That's all.

Also, if there are six teams instead of 32 - that means that each of those six teams is far more skilled. But anyway. When are we going to start talking about Danault??

Because most players who sign big UFA contracts turn out to be busts. Why would Danault be an outlier?

I think that makes sense on a contract with less term. Six years with a NMC is probably a retirement contract. Maybe Danault learns to accept a bottom six role, but that was the big thing here. He kept saying he wasn't given a big enough opportunity for offense while playing top line minutes with two of our better wingers. Anyway, it's going to be interesting to see how things pan out.
