Countless? Not sure I agree with you there. And as far as we know, McDavid got as much as he could at that time.

Besides Tom Brady, I'm not sure I can name any athlete who took blatant and significant pay cuts TO HELP THEIR TEAM off the top of my head. The players get 50% of HRR, which I think is a reasonable way to split the pie. Problem for the players is they play a sport that just doesn’t make that much money. The NHL is small potatoes compared to the MLB, NFL, and NBA. That’s why hockey players don’t get paid (and probably never will) like athletes in other “big 4” sports.
