I wonder if there was a deal that fell through for one (or both) of Holl/Dermott. The Leafs PR tweet about Rubins being loaned back to the Marlies an hour before the game feels a little late.

I'd suspect there's more to the story than just dumping a guy for a pick. The team has more use for a solid #7 D than it does a pick

I could see a scenario where they're paired with a forward with an intention to get an Forward upgrade.

The only problem is that we have too many forwards too, at least when Mikheyev comes back, and I don't see many areas for major improvement that warrants external intervention.

Bunting has performed well. Kerfoot has looked good in the top 6, and I think Ritchie, Engvall, and Mikheyev should be given chances there as well before we consider looking at external options. Engvall has performed well in various bottom 6 roles, and Ritchie has looked good on that 4th line too (and I would bet would look good with a more confident top 6 group too).

The main thing is that any kind of move is likely a month away when Mikheyev is ready to come back and forces the Leafs to make a cap decision, and the Leafs are going to play ~15 games in that period of time. We don't know if Sandin/Liljegren will struggle, or if there will be other injuries. I can understand the Leafs putting their plan in place now, and to see what kind of market is out there for those guys, but I am seeing the word 'regret' get thrown around a lot and just a lot of decisions being proposed based on very small sample sizes.

Who in there right mind would think cast offs from the Leaf blue line would fetch anything of value ?

You mean exactly like when the no depth Leafs put players on the waiver wire - no one would want them?

Thankfully, 99% of the rest board still has a positive IQ

I dont understand your question.
One of Dermott or Holl is being traded. There are alternatives for a 7th D.
Sorry I was not clear. Our rooster is short of decent dmen. If we lose Dermott and/or Holl, who is the next men up. If you take draft choices then it must come within. There were no real challengers at camp and we already have guys (Sandin and Liĺy) who are equally marginal players.

hard to believe December 2019 was 2 weeks ago
Sorry about the miss step. You obviously are the accountant of the board. I have been a Leaf fan before Johnny's 9th season for the Barons. I am just a fan who wants a cup before I die. Other a??es want to love Mitchie and Reilly. I love them to until they flaunt their millions and do not come prepared for the season. Can you imagine some of these idiots hate Punch...seriously 4 cups and they hate him...but love Pat Quinn. They love Dougie, who never looked like Mitchie does but they defend MM. This is a love feast, exactly why we are unsuccessful.

Our d need to be tougher to play against. Need some strength and grit back there. I want players looking over their shoulders when they go into the corner in our end.

I think this is rooted in the Leafs not really liking the composition of their D group this year. While Sandin & Liljegren have both been good, I feel like the Leafs look at the group overall, and say to themselves "we like the composition of last year's group better, with that Dermott-Bogosian 3rd pair".

It may be the kind of thing where they're prepared to move a D now, knowing full well that they're going to be shopping for 1 come deadline time.

Yep.

An even worse realization:

McCaan, Hyman Bogosian = 9.25 million.
Holl, Kerfoot, Ritchie = 8 million.

Two things to take account. Hyman is still overpaid and we shouldn't have signed him to his contract. Bogosian for that money was only available to Tampa Bay and we couldn't match, because of covid he wanted to play in the US. So that first trio wasn't even an option, though we could have negotiated different contract with Hyman (speculative off course if he'd signed for less).

Usually dman like Holl is more valuable than player like McCann, but it's good argument to have, if we still should have exposed him. Holl was part of our top4 last season and it was best top4 we have had in years. Could we have gambled on with Dermot, Liljegren, Sandin, Menell progressing enough and should we have traded Holl away instead of exposing him.

We have had problems for years acquiring suitable dman, so I understand why we played safe with our top4, because we don't have that 28 minutes rock, so it's more defense by committee approach.
