Let's face it, this guy (Dubas) was massively overrated from the hop. A few things:

1) Halo effect. Yes it's real. Because Dubas is young, articulate, and relatively attractive, people were willing to give him leeway that would never be afforded to a lot of other executives. His missteps were rationalized as being due to circumstances out of his control ("he couldn't have known there would be a global pandemic and the cap wouldn't go up!" - as if 31 other GM's in the league were somehow unaffected by said pandemic), while team successes were often attributed solely to him.

2) Analytics. Analytics in hockey have developed a cult like following over the years. Dubas was/is an analytics guy, therefore he was/is "right," even if the results don't bear that out. For example, how many times did we hear about "expected wins" or "getting goalied" when the Leafs lost in the playoffs? Often.

3) Media bias. By all accounts Dubas was/is a great guy, treated people well, and granted insider access to a number of high profile journalists. These journalists in turn carried water for him and went to bat when things weren't going well. This played in a large role in the creation of the "Dubas is a great GM" narrative that has seemingly existed since he signed Tavares as a UFA.

Leafs are less than 40 days away from having to make one of the most important decisions in team history. If they don't have AM signed by then, he can walk for nothing, and holds all of the cards in a contract negotiation. This is a pretty big task to be handed to someone who doesn't even have a job yet.

My gut is Shanahan just gives him a blank cheque for 8 years, which Matthews cashes in at $14 mil per.

Dubas' 2 major flaws with the Leafs were his handling of the Marner and Matthews contract negotiations and his insistence to bring back players or personnel from his junior days. I think blaming him for Tavares is absolutely silly, whoever was Toronto's GM was going to be forced to sign Tavares by Shanahan and upper management.
Exactly, you get Tavares for free you take him. He scored 47 his first year FFS.

His fatal flaw was not moving one of the core out to make room, and add pieces on the backend. He never had the courage - or maybe the permission - to make a big deal post the Tavares acquisition. This really the first year the team had playoff depth and unfortunately they hit a hot tender.

Would have to be a wink wink deal. As he can’t sign anything until after his NMC kicks in.

Yep. To the analytics cult the most important thing is winning on paper.

I heard Dubas got a hold of a real life version of that accelerator thing from Quantum Leap and leapt into JFJ on 6/24/06. He was going to switch Rask for Justin Pogge in the Raycroft trade, but Shanahan showed up as that hologram dude and stopped him.

Lou is paying Barzal and Horvat almost 20 mil for neither of them to be a 1C. He bent over for Kovalchuk so hard he got fined and in the process lost his homegrown star to Minnesota for free.

Lou has a hard time negotiating when he has all the leverage, he might be the only guy in the league less equipped to deal with those 3 contracts than Dubas was.

Great post.

Good post. Welcome to the board. You seem very wise.

TSN is saying that Kyle Dubas has turned things into a high-school drama. By airing dirty laundry at the press conference.

Then move on. You don't have to overpay someone because they ask nicely.

Not exactly a good idea to walk way from a 22 year old winger who had just put up 94 points.

Regardless it wasn't even that bad of a deal. Eichel got $10million after scoring 56 and 57 points (61 games).

They should have fired Shanahan and allowed Dubas to kick Matthews and Marner to the curb. Not players you build a winning team around. At least not in the environment that has come to form in TO.

Oh well. 1st round playoff revenue and all that.
