I wonder how much of the push for softness is Shanny overcompensating for concussing guys in his player career, he’s the only one of him Keefe and Dubas that hasn’t talked about wanting more physicality. The closest he’s come that I’m aware of is wanting more killer instinct.
I'm not sure how divided the two might have been on the players side of the equation? I do wonder if any of this was related to coaching/Keefe though? Regardless, it sounds as though the President and GM weren't on the same page to nearly enough of an extent when going by those demands.

The most troubling thing about that "if true" tweet is Shanahan still trying to get him back after this transparent power play and woe is me act. Only Shanahan's own lust for retaining power within MLSE saved us from a decade of "we can and we will" and social experiments from Dubas.

Fun fact/Story... NBA's Tracy Mcgrady lost a chance to play with Tim Duncan because the team cheaped out for that reason alone, not letting using the private jets see their family. Many say if they were teamed up they would've won multiple championships.

One did win regardless, but another never got the help (Mcgrady) even though he was one of the most sensational players in basketball during his time in Orlando after being traded from Toronto.
So gross how good that Raptor team could have become

Insanely frustrating this is how it unfolded.

Running a whole new GM search so close to a potentially pivotal offseason is probably the worst case scenario

The board should have made a firmer decision way earlier on this one way or the other. Potentially last offseason.
100%

With so many critical decision on the near horizon timing is not great for the organization unless its an internal promotion like Brandon Pridham.

He's been the biggest problem of all.

Does this mean we lose our cap guru Pridham?

I'm honestly worried the Leafs brass will do the Leafy thing and hire someone like Chiarelli to really set us back.

Shanahan hasn't let us down there before in that aspect, I don't think it'll happen. If he was out, I would be a lot more worried.

I'd give him some confidence to fix it before panicking.

I think it was more about full autonomy than money.

I would like to know who pushed to get those deadline players. If it was more Shanny that Dubas that means Dubas hasn’t learned at all and they forced him to change his approach.

I'm not sure you've even listened to this. No, this isn't pinning anything on Shanny, or blame.

It's Dubas wanting full autonomy. Shanahan not giving it to him... That's the suggestion.

There is no blame in that. Shanahan has the right to not give full authority. Dubas has the right to ask for it. In the end, you work under the conditions your employer sets out, and if you don't accept them, your gone.

This pretty much confirms some of the feelings others have had here... @JT AM da real deal would concur. Dubas wanted full autonomy, it wasn't going to happen, and now we move on, for better or worse...TBD.
Imagine Dubas had full autonomy, instead of O Reilly and Acciari we would have reaquired Malgin and Petan for the cup run or slow jog really

If it wasn't obvious: Total autonomy = I'm keeping Keefe indefinitely

That may have been part of it, but there was probably significant differing opinions on roster construction going forward too.

I believe you've got that one wrong.

This sucks, but it's good. Everybody from management to players want big money even after under performing. Set an example and make sure to get rid all the other bums too.

Ahhhhhh so it wasn’t I might take some time off. It was power and money

You wait and see. I bet Shanny takes over
A pres can stick around for multiple management regimes. Also a GM position added to his title would be a downgrade and invite far more scrutiny on a daily basis.

I agree. Paradoxically I thought he was the best suited GM to clean up the mess he made.
When you have maybe the leagues best disappearing act tell everyone how much you love the boss, then maybe he ain't the right guy.

I don't recall a player coming out and saying he loves his GM but not mention how hard the coach worked. If you know what I mean.

It tells me Matthews wasn't communicating with his coach at least not on any appreciable level.

25 guys in the room
24 talk to the coach
1 talks to the GM
Not a good picture
