It seriously makes me think I'm living in some alternate universe. Take a look at the situation Dubas walked into and say with a straight face he is one of the best GM's in the league. It reminds me of the John Chayka hype.

Are the players he inherited playoff losers or no? It seems to change often.

That team barely missed the playoffs. And once you’re in as we’ve seen with Florida all bets are off. Pittsburgh isn’t that much in shambles. They need a depth few signings and to off load some contracts but it’s a fixable situation. At least their core players know how to win LOL. So that’s all the head start you need. And Crosby and Malkin have proven they can play with depth guys easily.
Malkin is cooked bro.

Not trying to insult a guy on his way out, I think overall he's a good GM. But the hardest thing to do is turn a good team into a great team, and he was not able to do that. He had way too much loyalty for people who had never given him a reason to believe they could win a championship and it cost him. A fresh set of eyes is needed at this point

The narrative is written.

The brand new Phoenix Suns owner wants the Coyotes to join his arena.
AM34 goes to Arizona to rescue the franchise and to honor his uncle.
"Just like JT came back to Toronto, I'm going home"
It's a done deal.
As long as we get a decent return

And just like JT he'll go home to be coddled, catered to, and enjoy golf season

It was probably necessary but the timing of all this sucks. How is a new GM supposed to figure out this Matthews situation in like a month before the draft?
Shouldnt be too hard

Either he wants to sign or walk. If he wants to sign then the leafs need to hammer out of a contract. In Prinam is still there a lot of that leg work can be done I would think

If they were don't you think he should have done something about that. Or we just gonna keep 2 Huberdeaus scoring 100pts per season and folding like a lawn chair in the playoffs?

In the end, despite some good moves, some horrible ones, some shrewd thinking, some good and bad culture wise, he really accomplished nothing, given what he walked into. Nobody thought we’d be sitting here with so many failures after he was hired.

He certainly wasn't some epic failure but he wasn't a great success considering the assets he inherited. He rubbed some the wrong way, others thought he could do no wrong. The new media were 100% behind the guy explaining away all missteps and elevating every small victory. I believe in the coming months and years there will be some surprise revelations regarding the work environment at MLSE during his time.

He created an atmosphere here that was pretty cozy, he kept a coach he should have canned out of loyalty and he treated the players like royalty. Maybe the team took on his “nice guy” persona. Anyways, let’s hope we don’t diverge too much now.

Source on what the atmosphere is like

I am not in the room so I don't make any assumptions, but his actions of shipping out players who weren't doing well was pretty plentiful so I'd be worried if I was a player.

Dude I’m agreeing with you.

Rielly-Hainsey
Gardiner-Zaitsev

Is an ELITE top 4, it’s amazing that we were able to keep them together even for a short while. I can’t see how anyone else would be able to put that defense together in just 3 short years even if you inherit Rielly and Gardiner.

I liked dubas, never understood the hate.

Not his fault Marner and Matthews didn’t deliver. There’s not a GM in the league that would have moved either player.
