Disappointed that Dubas is gone but life moves on. He’ll definitely have success somewhere else and frankly I don’t care if he does. I only care about the Leafs.

Go get Eric Tulsky. He’s the guy I want.

If they were don't you think he should have done something about that. Or we just gonna keep 2 Huberdeaus scoring 100pts per season and folding like a lawn chair in the playoffs?

I am just curious if he inherited a good situation or not... it looks like he inherited a bad one based on the threads from last week, but he inherited a good one this week.

He certainly wasn't some epic failure but he wasn't a great success considering the assets he inherited. He rubbed some the wrong way, others thought he could do no wrong. The new media were 100% behind the guy explaining away all missteps and elevating every small victory. I believe in the coming months and years there will be some surprise revelations regarding the work environment at MLSE during his time.
All things considered I think he performed below average but was trending slightly up. Not anywhere near one of the best GM's in the league. Nowhere close

Lou probably moves on from the failure of a core

I can agree with that. However I trust Kyle way more to make that trade than Lou. I think Kyle is better at trading. But I do agree Lou may have recognized the flaws in the core earlier.

Matthew's NMC kicks in July 1st - you can't move him.
You can move him.. to any team before July 1st. Most teams would fall over themselves to acquire one year of Matthews (especially if the leafs retain 25-50%).

I have a gut feeling that those dancing with glee today, are going to look back on this in a few years very differently.
Maybe, but you don't hold on to a GM who can't build a winner because we've had decades of failure. He was clearly too emotionally involved and loyal to a fault
Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if he has success somewhere else. But do question if he can handle not having his own hand picked coaches etc

I liked dubas, never understood the hate.

Not his fault Marner and Matthews didn’t deliver. There’s not a GM in the league that would have moved either player.

Great smile, results weren't there.

I thought he had earned an extension but he had 1 playoff series win in 5 years, we're not losing a mastermind here.
That’s a great point. People are whining that the franchise is doomed but to be honest he wasn’t a top 5 GM, maybe not even top 10. Did some good things at the TDL this season but was lacklustre at other ones. I was a little concerned with how he would handle upcoming negotiations and that he would run it again with good friend Keefe.

Big opportunity for the new person to make an impact on the roster

A fanbase and Management who wants change with options for trades and re-signings

Oh and I guess:

Contracts: C (cash high term low but good value deals and no overpays on guys who are ‘mid’, as the kids say but Matthews and Mitch at 10.5 and 9.5 with two more years on them would make it much, much easier to trade them for a fair return)

Draft: B (Sandin and Durzi gone, Robertson is glassy, Amirov if not for cancer would probably have played this year, Knies looks great, the rest too early to tell - it’s okay but I’ll be happy if Niemela, Hirvonen, Voit and Minten can do something)

Pro scouting: B (A- on skaters solidly decent, D for goalies, E without Sammy and Jack)

European Scouting: B (Mikheyev - better than most teams get from European UFA)

Personnel choices: B- (good PP, improving PK and decent goalie coaches. I know Keefe is your boy but dude - outcoached by Dominique Ducharme and Paul Maurice…)

Development: C (this is bad luck mixed with bad results and going for safe picks - and then when you don’t go for the safe pick, oh, he has cancer. Only Knies is on track to be a big piece and Woll and Liljegren were previous regime, the triumvirate)

Trades: B+ (actually decent and only not an A because of Stanley Cup winner Nazem Kadri, I miss that guy. Has had to fix a few mistakes of his own and of others but has been able to, getting rid of Ritchie and Mrazek just last year was epic but he also holds onto guys too long - Dermott, Mikheyev, Engvall, Holl if he could have got a 2nd which I remember going round a few years back)

Free Agency: B- (JT looked like the move at the time and we were all very excited, don’t pretend you weren’t, and gets his numbers but is a mismatched part. Brodie has earned his money, Jarnkrok was good, Bunting is super cheap but JT at 11, and he’s captain. Mo’s deal is a fair sized retirement bag for him, he didn’t commit huge dollars to bottom six or pair guys and knew who to walk away from because they’re all in Edmonton)

Cap management: B (default grade - Covid never happens and the cap is 88-92 right now)

Presence and Media control: C (Mo should have been captain, he bent Willy but Matthews and Marner walked all over him. He’s actually quite smug about some things and was looked at like a doofus by the media and probably the league and he went to the Sault well way too much. Sure he’s clean cut and chipper and fresh and holds all the right values we need to hold in 2023 - but he never struck me as a serious person. He learned a lot I’m sure)

We should have two cups by now.

He has never addressed the goal situation. All hail marys.

We had the team to win the cup last year and this year but goaltenders let us down.
Campbell shit the bed last year and samsonov allowed 4 goals a game and was sub 900 in the playoffs.

He did a good job this deadline but it could have been great. Holl and kerfoot should have been gone for pick and used that cap space and picks for another impact forward.

Dubas problem is he thinks he is the smartest guy in the room. He must of had an idea that his job was attached to our successes. Why not use bostons first round pick to get something you really need
Again with your job on the line.

At first I thought it was cowardly to jump ship after setting the team up for pending disaster but on more thought, I respect it. He recognizes he isn't as smart as he thought he was and is moving over to let someone else clean up his mess.

Can't believe the Leafs wasted all that potential since winning the lottery. Why would you hand the reigns over to a total rookie, blows my mind.

The fact he was voted best GM by agents always irked me, I’m fine with “biggest asshole”. His sense of morality was great on one level, but this sport, not politics.
LOL exactly. As if that's a good award to win. Might as well be best doormat in the NHL

Right but if they don't add and go out with a whimper in the 2nd round the GM gets put to the fire for not adding to the team lol it is quite literally a no win situation. He had to buy this year and the players he added were all quality additions that contract stuff aside would be valuable to have back next year.
Definitely get that is a tricky spot. However there were alternative options, personally after the Columbus and Montreal series I would have made some adjustment to coaching staff and/or personal.

I just think deadline UFAs are hardly ever worth their cost, especially to a team that had failed for the previous decade practically. Say you made a deep run the year before, that is when I think you go big in deadline UFAs like the leafs did. Not after another 1st round exit.

The 3 moves, in my opinion, that killed this teams chance to win under Dubas. The JT signing, the Kadri trade, the Marchment trade.

We should have let Matthews and Kadri grow into the 1-2 punch down the middle. We could have used a big body like Marchment on the wing. Hindsight and all of that but those were glaringly bad moves at the time.

Too much over thinking and too much overreacting in Toronto. We need a GM whos comfortable with the Toronto pressure. Dubas' end of season presser, to me anyway, indicated he was not.
