So... just learned this on twitter. WTF i mean WTF in the actual WTF

To me that’s the equivalent of having the son of the GM on the team. Can’t say uff to him and you have to play him top minutes.

So much conflict of interest and Shanny let this shit fly for seven years?

There are other agencies out there. Get an agent Holl has. Not your superstar pillar of a player in Matthews.

Brendan Shanahan sends a memo to the entire league letting them know who is currently replacing Kyle Dubas

Yesterday, on the Friday before a long weekend, Brendan Shanahan shocked the hockey world when he made the announcement that he'd relieved Kyle Dubas of his position. This came after multiple reports that the two parties were close to finalizing a long-term contract. That entire deal fell through and Shanahan reacted accordingly.

During his press conference yesterday, Shanahan made it clear that it was business as usual for the Leafs. After the conclusion of his press conference Shanahan sent an email to all 31 other teams confirming who would be running their day-to-day hockey operations.

#Leafs have notified all 31 other teams to contact Brandon Pridham in the interim for any personnel discussions after GM Kyle Dubas was not renewed. This move will give the Maple Leafs time to determine the course they will take heading forward. The Leafs expect a full General Manager search to begin next week.

Mirtle hints at moves that weren't made holding the team back. The shamelessness of it is eye catching. Dubas spent a significant amount of futures over the past few seasons fortifying the team for the playoffs. If anything it appears that Dubas may have been blocked from parlaying the team's best prospects to get another major addition. One more major addition probably wouldn't have done anything about the star forwards no show in round 2.
Perhaps we have Shanny to thank that Knies is still a Leaf?

Is it a common thing in the NHL or other pro sports leagues where the highest paid player on the team and the general manager both work with the same agency?

There aren't a ton of good agencies and no clue how many represent management-level people...

I don't see why it wouldn't be common.

Drew Doughty is the 26th-ranked agency (he is not actually an agency obviously), for handling his own deal.

Letting Gaudeau get to that point was awful. The trade itself for Tkachuk wasnt even that bad, but extending at that time was very questionable and showed a lack of vision.

With that said, we've hired the consensus best in the business before in Burke and Babcock, both flamed out. We've hired inexperience and experienced, neither has worked.

So many factors that go into these decisions and maybe its just a change of scenery and resources to make those jumps. I dont think any of us have a clue how the next person will do.
However Gaudreau was coming off two brutal seasons. Would you have paid $8.5M for him the summer of 2021? Not sure if he would have had any interest in signing for what a 20 goal guy is worth so I don't fault Tree for Gaudreau. In hindsight 8 x 8 would seem like a crazy homerun and an overpay by the team and then a stroke of genius after the McDavid type year happens.

Now Tkachuk was on record saying he wanted a long term extension after the ELC and that is probably where Treliving failed. The official word was they just didn't have the cap space to sign Matthew long term so they go bridge with the expectation that he will still want to stay there when they have a bit more space. He guessed wrong and this year he had the misfortune to sign Huberdeau, Mangi, and Kadri after last years freak seasons inflated their costs to sustain a 50 win club.

I don't know how I feel about him as potentially the Leafs next guy but they could definitely do worse.

I didn't see that but it was anticipated. Pridham is the current GM as expected.

If the video of Shanny's reacting to Dubas trading a first for Foligno is any indication...he probably stopped him from making really bad trades. Again, here we are with the "Muh..but...but he wasn't allowed to make the trades he wanted to" stuff with Dubas' vision. It's kind of like Communism...the current crop of Commies keep saying that "True Communism hasn't been tried yet...don't count China, Cuba and The Soviet Union...they didn't do it the correct way" they say.

If Dubas is pulling the "Expected Trades Won" card....I don't know what to say. The only caveat is if Dubas wanted to make the team tougher and Shanny was resistant to it...I am unsure on that one.

There's also a video of him going over options at the expansion draft in a tone that is like you sure you want to get rid of McCann?

Maybe Dubas just didn't like to have to explain his moves

Report: Dubas wanted more money and control

With the bombshell that Kyle Dubas and the Toronto Maple Leafs parted ways in the sense that his contract was not renewed, there has been more information released behind the reasoning for the split, and it may or may not shock anyone.

According to reports Kyle Dubas was looking for a deal in the neighborhood of $6-7 million a season and full control while the team was only willing to offer him 4 million a season. Dubas and Brendan Shanahan had been speaking back and forth however Shanahan knew after hearing what Dubas had to say during his stand-alone press conference that it was time to move in a different direction.

Entitlement starts at the top.

It’s funny how the Dubas contract expiration coincides with all the NMC kicking in and the soon to be UFA status.
Then as the clock is ticking, you are suddenly the only option at the last minute to deal with all this. For a price of course. Nice. Except the other guy said see ya anyway.
It was all by design to save his job… strategic.

From a bit of quick looking there seems to be a good handful of NHL players who work with this agency Wasserman Media Group.

While not a direct conflict of interest - it is heavily indicative of one. Are there any other examples around the league of a superstar player and a GM working with the same agency? I'm genuinely asking, I don't know much about it.

Doesn't it make SO MUCH SENSE that Matthews and Dubas work with the same agency when you take this into account?

We are going to find out a few things very soon:

1) Is it Dubas that is/was married to the core and the coach or is that direction coming from Shanny and ownership?
2) Does Matthews love playing for the Leafs, did he love it only because of the easy going atmosphere set under Dubas, or does he simply only care about money?
It has been now revealed that former Toronto Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas is represented by Chris Armstrong from Wasserman.

Please also keep in mind that current Toronto Maple Leafs centre Auston Matthews is also a Wasserman client.

It's done. Eyes forward, focussed on immediate new future. Change doesn't mean a step back or worse off, just different now.

It's called survival, resilience, and an attitude of embracing a new opportunity for success.

In other words, for any sucky boys on the roster or in the fanbase, a chance to experience growing up.

I don't know how to find which GMs have agents, and where they work, I'd assume that is much harder to find.

I'm also curious about how many of the agencies will represent executives... I didn't even know it was a thing until yesterday.

This all may be as innocent as he liked working with Matthews' agent on the contract and found the organization to be very professional and efficient so he hired another top agent from that agency.

Are you unaware of an agency's job?

Their job is to get their client the best contract possible. The Maple Leafs DO NOT WANT Matthews to get the best contract possible, they want him as cheap as possible. I don't think I have to explain how even on the surface it looks completely wrong for both of them to be working for the same agency. I'll reiterate again that I'm not educated very well on this side of hockey, which is why I want to see if there's more examples around the league of this kind of thing.

Are you aware that agencies do much more than just contract negotiation?

He could have liked the overall agency and the things they provide.

This seems like a deflection. Dubas' main reason for working with agency is to make sure he gets paid the most money to take care of his family. What else is he hiring an agency for? Doing his dishes?

Just looking at our roster and contracts, Dubas left us in a rough spot.

Knies-Matthews-Marner
Tavares-_______-Nylander
Jarnkrok-_______-Laffrrty
_______-_______-_______

Reilly-Brodie
McCabe-Liljegren
Giordano-Timmins

Murray
Woll

Tavares can't play centre anymore, so we need to sign at least 3 centres to fill out the roster.

The blueline is locked in, but it isn't nearly good enough.

Samsonov needs a contract.

We have less than 9 million in cap space.

Our 3 main trade assets are just weeks away from full NMCs.

Finances, legal, PR, not sure what else.

I know for players (not sure about GMs) they also are kind of like a concierge service.

Dubas made Matthews and Marner among the highest paid players in the NHL (without even getting maximum term) despite the fact that they had not accomplished anything beyond the regular season. It shouldn't come as a surprise that Dubas expected no less in his own contract negotiations.

This sense of entitlement that exists within the organization has to be exorcized at all costs.
