Confirmed with Link: Kyle Dubas named President of Hockey Operations

Why would you be skeptical? Dubas basically got fired for asking for that amount of power in Toronto.
I am skeptical that a) it’s going to work and b) ownership won’t meddle.

And again, I think the PoHO is a dumb position. Maybe that’s part of it.

I’m willing to give him a chance for sure.

Burke was not hired to have any power on hockey decisions.

He was hired to build out the organization due to Rutherford’s incompetence and talk on the radio and be a public figure.

If it wasn't, that changes my view, but that move singlehandedly changed the trajectory of that franchise, IMO. The minute it was made, they essentially gave up on goaltending or defense until the cap was able to rise, and then COVID happened. But even then, the top of their roster is STILL top heavy compared to other teams and this is years later.
I can’t prove this to you, so take it as you will, but the decision to sign Tavares, the hometown boy, came from the top.

Tavares was the palate cleanser. Proof that the leafs were still good and relevant and forget about all the recent blowups

It's not like Dubas didn't have other options. The Sens job was reportedly his if he wanted it.

The actual hire I will wait and see how it plays out.

But as always, I only ask that there is a clear game plan that makes sense. An analytics guy through and through is a plan that makes sense.

Oh I'm not sure I'm just goofin. I think the last regime was a slapped together bucket full of moron who didn't really know what they were doing, though. No real goal, no real plan, no real vision. Haphazard and slipshod. I'd like to think that this time around these titles and the workflow/chain of command of the FO actually mean something.

But obviously we'll see. It's the Penguins. They haven't engendered much confidence when it comes to having a functional and professional FO for years, now. Lots of empty suits in the past lurching around doing a bunch of nothing. So I get the skepticism.

Also lol Leafs fans. Imagine going over to a board to lecture a team's fanbase that's actually... you know... known success sometime AFTER man landed on the moon.
The last time the Leafs were relevant, RFK was still alive.

What are our alternatives? I’m happy to bitch about this team, but I’m gonna give them a chance here. Like, even if I think they’re stupid, nothings gonna change anyhow, so I may as well go with it, right?

But I don’t think this is stupid. And I don’t think you spend this kinda money on the hottest young thing in the league and then put him in a “ceremonial position.”

We’re all new to FSG, let’s see if they’re as smart as we’ve heard.
I’ve been in higher Ed so long my first instinct is that everyone is a f***ing moron until proven otherwise.

It seems like Burke was brought on pretty much because Hextall hated dealing with people. So Burke just was there to shake hands and kiss babies and maybe give his two cents every now and then on moves.

Dubas I think will actually shape the entire hockey operations department and implement ideas and processes. And I would imagine he’ll be a little more involved in roster decisions.

Given Dubas' age I think he's here both to try and squeeze a cup win out of our narrowing window and then to also steer us through the rebuild.

The current squad isn't really his team but he'll try to tweak it into a contender, and then in the following years build it in his image.

Grad school was the most surreal experience of my life. I met people so smart I couldn't believe it; like you start to think maybe there really are adults running the world. Then I would hear people so dumb I couldn't believe they were able to handle basic activities of daily living like grocery shopping or washing themselves. We all had roughly the same career outcomes.

Sources say Hextall is still on the fence about what he’ll eat for lunch today. Hard decision and it takes time.

Id imagine that is probably how the conversations went with ownership. I think if he went into the interview and sold them on an immediate rebuild that it wouldnt have worked out.

Yep. Any discipline, any school it’s like that mostly. Hell, some of my colleagues are brilliant, some of them might drown in a drizzle.
