Confirmed with Link: Kyle Dubas named President of Hockey Operations

Madden: What convinced you to take the job?
Dubas: Family decided moving to Pitt was based on ownership, coaches, players, staff being committed to winning and the interactions and feel of the city. Synergy at the ownership level and way they felt in the city.

Madden: Analytics question
Dubas: Background in scouting, data and objective information can improve decisions at the organizational level.

Madden: Do the Pens have enough speed?
Dubas: If you're just adding pure speed, you're probably forgoing other areas. Will work with coach Sully to identify the types of players we want. We want players that are smart, competitive, "really fast" but complete etc...

Madden: How much input will you have on lineup decisions?
Dubas: Best run teams are when its a partnership between front office and coaching staff. System changes will be a robust discussion between front office and coaching staff. Will constantly evaluate types of players they have and how they fit in the system.

Madden: Goaltending Q
Dubas: Lot of things play into consistency of goaltending. Will talk to members of the organization for an eval on the goalies they have, we need to very quickly shift to discussions with Jarry's people due to his FA status. Goaltending is vitally important, look at the teams in the SC final. Need to fill the pipeline with quality goaltending.

Madden: How big are the days and weeks ahead?
Dubas: Will have long days and weeks ahead. Its exciting and a new challenge for me. Come into this eyes wide open. Lots of extremely positive parts of the organization, but we have a lot to fill out on the management side. Draft and combine stuff going on right now. Short term I'll be extremely focused on the draft and FA, when we get to July we'll fill out the management side of things.

Madden: Win now vs rebuilding for later
Dubas: The intention is to right away surround the group that exists with quality players and contend. If we get into the year and our intentions aren't being met, we might have to adapt quickly, but I have a lot of faith in the group we have here. Proud, strong leadership that we'll bolster with the assets and cap space we have. Build out and supplement the various parts of the organization. Try to minimize the gap between competitiveness and contending as the core gets older. It can sound daunting but I have a lot of confidence we can minimize the "middle part" of that build.

Madden: Are the Pens "stale"?
Dubas: Would be unfair for me to say right now whether that's true or not, but there always needs to be a "shock to the system" every year. Try to improve the team in a way that's well thought out. Has to be done smartly, especially for a guy like me that's been coming from somewhere else for 9 years.

Question about size that I didn't really listen to. Size is an added advantage bla bla bla.

Madden: Is the bottom 6 the biggest concern?
Dubas: I would want to continue to take my time to go through it and identify how we wanna use the 3rd and 4th lines and how their minutes are deployed. Needs to take his time to evaluate, depth in WBS will benefit the Pittsburgh Penguins. Try and add younger players to the organization whether thats at the AHL or NHL level. Same thing applies to the defense.

Madden: Do you still watching wrestling?
Dubas: Last thing I watched was Wrestlemania this year, but there's been a lot going on recently.

Listened for like three minutes and what I heard can be summed up as Madden trying to get some kind of definitive answer out of Dubas as to what areas of the roster he's focused on, and Dubas basically answering each time "Dude, I took the job days ago, we got a lot of evaluation and discussion ahead of us before we work out a focused, concrete plan".

Very generic interview overall, no "new" information as it were. Then again, didn't expect any revelations as he's only a few days in.

Kyle thanks for coming on, is it true Shanahan shagged his teammates wife? And how badly does that reflect on him as somebody who’s job is to manage people?

Kyle, how stupid are Leafs fans? Be honest

Yeah the Penguins are going to sign Bunting this off-season. He fits that play style and there's the obvious Toronto connection.
Hope so. Watching Bunting I see a guy who can be a young Kunitz if he just cuts the shit.

He tweets like a twit.

Its just a repeat of the press conference right now. Madden is asking pretty general questions
Anyone actually expect a pens media person to actually have the guts to ask hard questions?

“Kyle you’re an intelligent person, how dumb are you pretending to be about the Penguins coaching situation to please the ownership?”

I mean it’s obvious but nice to hear anyway that pure speed is of little value in itself. A team of Kapanens is a awful team.

My concern is those guys (Kunitz and Hornqvist) were the ones who drove the other team batty and made them take penalties, whereas Bunting's the one with the reputation and seems to get a lot of penalties (or things are let go against him that should be called).

Basically 1. I just started I gotta make my plan.

2. I do not want to reveal my hand so f off.

Kunitz actually took a decent amount of penalties himself as well, he averaged about 0.75 penalty minutes a game.

Bunting does take a lot of penalties but I think his PIM totals aren't as bad as they seem on paper. He got 2 misconducts, 1 fighting major and multiple (too lazy to continue counting) coincidental minors.

Edit: I counted anyway, he had 20 (!) coincidental minors. Most were unsportsmanlike conductor or roughing, but there were a few slashing calls as well. That plus the fight and misconducts account for 65 of his 103 PIM from last year.

So, what convinced you to take this job? Answer: they offered me a shit load of money…and power

It almost sounds as if KD is intends to challenge idiot Sullivan’s authority and roster control decisions.

It’s a bold strategy, let’s see if it pays off for him.
A lot of us on HF Boards should put in applications for AGM jobs with him if that’s the case…

FSG basically fell over themselves for Dubas and dropped everybody they'd been interviewing for a couple weeks as soon as he became available, then handed him a 7 year deal and total autonomy. I genuinely don't think they'd side with Sullivan if push came to shove and the two butted heads, tbh.

The real issue is that Sullivan is extremely well respected in the hockey world and Dubas is very likely one of the people who thinks he's a fantastic coach. There's probably zero threat Dubas is scrutinizing Sullivan to the degree that he'd be on the hot seat, let alone fired, anytime soon.

At some point, even the Sully d-riders will run out of kool aid when he’s on his third GM and still failing.
