Dude, you're really splitting hairs or putting way too much stock in Poehling having played 60 more games.

21-22
Poehling had 17 points in 57games with 55% O-zone starts
DOC had 5 points in 22games with 65% O-zone starts

22-23
Poehling had 14 points in 53 games with 20% O-zone starts
DOC had 11 points in 46 games with 29% O-zone starts

They both scored at roughly the same pace as they did the prior year while seeing tougher zone starts. I don't understand how that translates to DOC improving while Poehling is stalling. They're also very similar to each other in terms of production and the same age (Poehling actually being about 6 months younger).

I am absolutely splitting hairs, but to me, there is a hair to split here.

And to a certain extent, I am simply looking for justifications of my gut instincts about the players in the stats. My gut instinct, my limited and dumb scouting report, is Poehling is going to be one of those guys who never puts it together and that DOC has a chance of being a guy who leans into his strengths and hits a ceiling.

But I see it. Going by 5v5 p/60, DOC did 0.09 better for points - and perhaps more importantly, didn't just have a lucky streak of scoring before going quiet for the rest of his NHL time, he was regularly making plays - while Poehling dropped by 0.19. A guy with Poehling's 1.24 is a guy I don't really care whether they play, a guy with DOC's 1.57 is a guy I'm okay with seeing on L3.

And at this stage of development? I think those 60 extra games are big. 100 games is often used as the cut off as "made it". Poehling is over that, DOC isn't.

Again, I'm not shitting on DOC or pumping up Poehling. I don't think either are anything special but they should both be in the lineup on a nightly basis over the likes of Heinen, Archibald, etc. I've just seen so many suggested lineups with DOC as a lock for L3 and some lunatics even suggesting to put him with Malkin while Poehling is a 13F or sometimes even forgotten altogether. They're the same level of player.

I would play Archibald over Poehling every day of the week based on last year. More productive per 60, better possession stats, more noticeably part of the ideal team identity. Poehling was a better PKer but that's about it.

And the identity part is important. I am sick of them throwing a bunch of talented players together and hoping they come together. I want players who fit a cohesive identity and whose strengths counterbalance other players' weaknesses. Archibald and DOC offer that. Poehling should, but it never felt like he did.

Edit: to your edit, I don't watch him and think "fastest skater in the league", but I think it's pretty apparent the dude can skate. Certainly better than somebody like Sheahan as you mentioned before or Bjugstad or something.

Oh yeah, he can skate. Although I'd have happily used Bjugstad as a comparable, as that guy could really skate.

Although I think Bjugstad is a great other example of a ton of great qualities but nothing drawing them together.

edit: And I might well be wrong. They're certainly both at the stage of their career where narratives will change very quickly. But since you asked, that's what I see.

Honestly my opinion is that neither O'Connor or Poehling are anything particularly special and the team should probably only have 1 of them on their 4th line next year. A 4th line of O'Connor-Poehling-Carter looks better than what they had last year but it's still not a good 4th line.

Neither O'Connor or Poehling have produced enough in regular roles for me to be slamming on the table for them to be playing every day. They're both more like Tom Kuhnhackl or Scott Wilson than Bryan Rust (referring to like 2017 Rust, not today Rust).

Can't believe how excited I am! We got a great guy who knows what the hell he's doing in constructing a team and maximizing the collective talent and ability of his players. Can't wait to see what the next 45 days brings!

Which is exactly what the cup winning teams had. Kuhnackl, Rowney, Wilson etc. If you sign a veteran (Cullen) you give him cheap one year deals. Not sign him for 3x2 with an NMC

The funny thing about that is a guy like Kuhn was outta the league not long after. So it's not like he was this great player.

And yet while not a KEY factor he was a contributor to the team's success, particularly in the playoffs.

I feel like there is a lesson for Penguins fans there. But I'm too dumb to articulate it.

Colby Armstrong, analyst for AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh, speculated on Real Kyper and Bourne today that Pittsburgh Penguins President of Hockey Operations Kyle Dubas might hire one of the following individuals as the new General Manager of the hockey club:

- Mathieu Darche

- Jason Botterill

- John Chayka

We should give them all NMCs and a raise?

Yes!

Wait... no.

They need to definitely go out in FA and power-blast a bunch of money at more middling bullshit that will probably work approximately as well as some farmhand on a nothing contract. That's the lesson. They've definitely never tried this before so it's bound to work.

Then we all circle around later next season and gripe about how the bottom six sucks and they need to throw more money at it at the TDL.

I feel like this team and board both need to figure out if Dubas is going to be really the one making the calls sneakily (which is apparently good?) or he's going to work in cooperation with his new GM (which is apparently not?).

Chayka is not employed by any team soo Dubas wouldn't have to wait till July to hire him, other 2 & Tulsky are employed

Why would we have to wait? I recall Botterill left for Buffalo before the season was even over.

I suspect the team either knows or will use the next few months to find out.

Me, I don't care as long as it's a room full of smart, skeptical people who listen to each other and a final decision maker who's happy using that.

Not just skeptical, but cynical.

Trade DeSmith

Sign Varlamov or Andersen at 2x4 or 2x5

Trade for Ingram

Sign Ingram at 2x2.25

Ride the hot guy.

Tokarski for WB/S.

Oh lol I'm fully aware of the predicament we find ourselves in, don't worry I know better than most. That said, we got one of very few candidates who have a chance to actually right the ship.

Didn’t you like sleepy until the deadline this year?

That’s sort of my whole point. I don’t think PoHO Hank has a lot of point besides insulating yourself from failure. It’s basically making the position a GM and the GM an AGM.
Yeah, it feels like it's gonna run like Vancouver with JR as POHO making the decisions and Alvin as GM sorta acting as his assistant.

I was largely indifferent because I don't believe this is a contending team. I was most concerned about hanging on to our 1st rounder. At the time never considered KD would even be an option.
