Kyle Dubas becomes quickest Maple Leafs GM to 100 wins

Dubas eclipsed the previous franchise-best mark, originally set by the first general manager in team history, Charles Querrie, by 14 games.

Though what Dubas has done is impressive, this achievement does say something more about the history of the Maple Leafs general managers. Fifteen men have held the position between Querrie and Dubas, and not a single executive was able to win better than 100 of their first 196 games at the helm.

It's safe to assume, then, that after assembling what might be the most talented Maple Leafs team in generations, Dubas's greatest accomplishments are still to come.

Rarely do GMs join a team where the table has already been set.

since joining the leafs as GM (not AGM), he traded/let go the following players:

JVR
Bozak
Komarov
Martin
Johnsson
Kapanen
Kadri
Ceci*
Barrie*
Leivo
Gardiner
Brown
Zaitsev
Ennis
Hainsey
Marleau
Sparks

*those are players that arrived through the removal of other players so they technically do count somewhat

instead of putting players that he himself acquired, I felt it would be easier to just highlight the ones that were here before him and that he inherited:

William Nylander
Morgan Rielly
Pierre Engvall
Frederik Andersen

That's it. Nylander, Engvall were also under Dubas and Keefe on the Marlies throughout their entire career.

So in reality the 2 players he really hasn't had much hand in was Rielly and Andersen.

Table already set? nah. He changed the table so fast that people didn't even realize it.

To put this into perspective... this was our lineup just before Dubas became GM

Hyman^-Matthews^-Nylander
JVR-Bozak-Marner^
Marleau-Kadri-Komarov
Brown-Moore-Martin
Gauthier/Leivo

Rielly-Hainsey
Gardiner-Polak
Carrick-Zaitsev
Dermott^

Andersen
McElhinney (who apparently had one really good year left in him)

The ones with a ^ are ones that are still on the franchise and ones he had an input or in some cases big control in their acquisition (ie 2015 draft/the before lou lam period... technically everyone was going to select Matthews so I consider that everyone had a hand in that one). Everyone else is gone beside andersen and rielly. defense doesn't look the same at all.

And none of the players he kept had contracts signed.

That the second fastest GM to reach that plateau took 190 games... Yeah, Toronto's GM history isn't full of legends, to put it mildly.

How long did it take everyone else to get to 100 wins?

Most GM's do not take over when a team is already doing fairly well, so I wouldn't be surprised if 176 games is one of the fastest in NHL history in general.

Quote by McNamara after one of those typical miserable 80s losses: "I have nothing to say and I'm only going to say it once."
He was horrible ...
Mr Gregory was more what I started with as a fan in the organization in the 60s and 70s , he was good person and actually drafted well and had a lot of success , but when Ballard started taking over it went downhill after that ... then all that crap with rehiring of Imlach was dreadful and then more crap , then up with Fletcher and Quinn and you know the rest ...until now ....
Great times great times

Ehhh surprising number of new GM's come into the fold on competitive teams to put them over the top.

BriseBois last year with Tampa Bay
Brian MacLellan in Washington
Jim Rutherford in Pittsburgh
Stan Bowman in Chicago
Burke in Anaheim

And that's just in the last 15 years

Usually when a GM takes over a rebuild follows and isn't handed the keys to a winning team. That said hes done an excellent job building towards the current team.

Agreed, very few teams change their GMs coming off a record setting 105 point & 100 year franchise best mark for wins and points in a season.

The Leafs were coming off of 40 & 49 win seasons or [89 win total] in 164 games (2 seasons prior) and now Dubas has recorded +11 win improvement in his first 176 games [in +14 extra games]

If however you compare past and present GMs to the same 164 game mark matching games played and apples to apples.

Lou Lam 89 wins in his last 164 games (2016-17 & 2017-18)
&
Dubas in his first/next 164 games 2018-19 (82 games & 46 wins) + 2019-20 (70 games & 36 wins) + (1st 12 X games of 2020-21 & 9 wins) = 91 wins in 164 games.

The Leafs saw a marginal +2 win improvement in the 164 games prior to the GM change, compared to the post GM change.

This is what you would expect at minimum where the table is already been set and handing over a 100+ point team. :wg:

PS. 1 X GM inherited a last over place overall team with 29 wins, and the other inherited a franchise best mark team with 49 wins as their starting points.

Classic Mess

I think some are missing the bitch and moan threads

According to a lot people around here, our stars were soft, greedy jerks who refused to work hard and do what it takes to win, our defense was terrible, we were in "cap hell", our team philosophy was all wrong, and we had no depth.

Gonna be some confused narratives. Either Dubas fixed all that and is awesome, or that stuff wasn't true in the first place.
