Benning couldn't sleep at night if there were a possibility of Dorsett being pushed out of the lineup. This is what our RW is projected to be next year IMO.
Eriksson
Hansen
Rodin/Virtanen
Dorsett

A bunch of those guys, including Dorsett himself can play LW if necessary. I don't see it as a huge deal. But evidently we're rolling with the plan of expecting big things from young/inexperienced guys like Rodin/Virtanen. :dunno:

makes sense for versteeg if he can get paired with mcjesus, then cash in next offseason

More likely to start with draisaitl or rnh I think. I'd be pretty surprised if the season doesn't start with mcdavid playing with lucic and Eberle . Not that things can't change over time obviously.

If he does sign the PTO and gets a contract here he'll have plenty of opportunity to cash in. I'm sure he'd get a chance with McDavid if Eberle hits a slump or gets injured, but I'm sure Eberle will start on McDavid's wing given his production last season there. Even still he's likely going to get to play with either Nuge or Draisaitl, and one of Pouliot, Lucic, or Maroon, and could get some PP time depending on if Puljujarvi makes the team.

Its a good situation for him to go into, and it gives the Oilers a nice safety net if Yakupov can't get it together or if Puljujarvi isn't ready to start in the NHL.

fair enough, cant pretend that i am up to date on the oilers, just figured they would go for the balanced attack. Especially since mcdavid could carry his linemates and make them perform so figured that eberle would be used elsewhere

lucic-mcdavid-versteeg
pouliot-rnh-eberle
yak-draisaitl-puj

or

lucic-mcdavid-eberle
pouliot-rnh-versteeg
yak-draisaitl-puj

that is a scary looking top 9 either way

Maroon probably factors in there somewhere as well in the top 9 as McLellan seemed to like to run a big puck protecting guy on each line last year. If Versteeg gets signed it likely means that either Yakupov has continued to disappoint or that Puljujarvi starts in the AHL. If the opposite happens and Pulju and Yak both look good then maybe they still sign Versteeg and keep him as a 4th line/depth option who can step into the top 9 if injuries happen or if someone is struggling.

either way edmonton looks set on forwards, if they can pick up another defenceman they can make some noise

So Johnny tap ins finally found a team. I couldn't stand him as a player with the Leafs. Completely unwilling to do any dirty work in any zone, and would rely on line mates to find him at the far post for an empty net tap in. No wonder teams stayed away from him.

Does that have an impact on whether Yakupov is staying?

Yak's in a fight to make the team now imo.

If Yak doesn't show some improvement in playing a team game then I wouldn't be shocked to see him on waivers if Versteeg and Puljujarvi prove more effective in training camp.

I don't think it affects Yak at all. I think this is to ensure that we have something in the bank in case Pulujarvi isn't NHL ready. This will have little to no bearing on Yakupov's place on our roster.

Yak won't go on waivers. No way. More likely he ends up playing with McDavid.

If we sign him, I hope its for a press box guy who only comes in if Eberle, Yak or Pulujarvi get injured.

I find it amazing that a guy on a PTO who pretty much nobody else wanted is likely to push a #1 OV pick off a roster...

He isn't likely to. Like I said earlier, I expect that this is insurance in case they don't feel Pulujarvi is ready after seeing him in camp. Never a bad thing to have competition anyway. I think Versteeg would have to look better than he ever has to push Yakupov out.

most likely 3rd line... he's still a very useful 2-way winger. More than Yak

I don't think so. Useful and 2 way winger are not words I would use to describe Versteeg. He can score gimmes though. Our 3rd line rw is likely going to be Pulujarvi. Yak probably plays 2 RW unless we bring in a 3C as well to push Drai over to the wing. Might even get the gravy spot next to McDavid, but that would surprise me.

Lucic-McDavid-Eberle/Yakupov
Pouliot - Nuge/Drai - Yak/Eberle
Maroon - Nuge/Drai - Pulujarvi
Hendricks - Letestu - Kassian

I think this is more to push the guys coming into camp. Versteeg probably only gets signed if he blows all expectations away or somebody gets injured. Or if Chiarelli has a trade for Yakupov in place, which would shock the heck out of me.

A PTO isn't an NHL contract. Thinking about this, I really believe its in case Kassian doesn't show up in shape and/or Pulujarvi doesn't show that he is NHL ready. If either of those things happen, we have little to put in that spot.

Any thought to moving Drai to LW?
