It's always the lower level guys who coach. First, they don't rely on natural ability or reputation. Second they tend to kick around to a lot of teams so they see a lot of styles. Third they play a lot of places so they make a lot of connections. Dom Moore is the new Scotty Bowman the second he takes a coaching job.

That said Martin St. Louis might be a guy to watch in the future. After his retirement he started coaching his kids and late last season he was added to Columbus's staff to help out their power play. Maybe he's just the next Adam Oates--a kind of specialist but something tells me that if he's interested he could be very good some day because I think he'd really put in the work. But you'd hire him as an assistant first.

But Dom Moore--I could see him too--always a gamer and a rink rat. A guy who depended very much on guile. Understands the game.

Keeping in mind as well that easily the majority of the Rangers best prospects did not play in Hartford last year. They were either with the Rangers or in Europe, college or the CHL and that's going to change more now. It's hard to say how things are going to break this year but our best prospects in Hartford last year were Hajek and Lindgren with a little bit of Georgiev. Lettieri and Gettinger are pretty decent prospects but not really the same quality and the wave coming this year so far pretty much eclipses the last two years. So one year we add Chytil, Andersson, DeAngelo, Pionk and Georgiev and last year it was more like Howden, Hajek, Lindgren and later in the year Lemieux. And this year it's going to be one of Kakko/Hughes, Kravtsov, Shestyorkin, Fox, Rykov and Keane and maybe more and more and more as time goes on that's going to filter through Hartford--but maybe not this year--we'll see anyway. But all in all that's a lot and that's still not nearly all--there's Miller, Lundkvist, another 1st this year anyway, Lindbom and Barron just to name some of those in the next wave or two.

Interesting name!

Knoblauch is not a bad choice.

I'd look into Jon Slaney as well.

And if they're going to go with someone from the old guard that they know, Peter Dineen is a name that's attached to Gorton and JD. Longtime Bruin/Blue Jackets scout, became an assistant in the ECHL last year in the Devs organization.

Maybe they should to get away from hiring someone they have connections to because that hasn’t worked very well. Gernander was a former player and assistant coach under Schoenfeld who was Sather’s buddy. McCambridge was Arniel’s buddy. McCambridge played for Providence when Gorton was in Boston.

There are plenty of candidates who have no ties to the Rangers organization.

I agree, but even a guy like Slaney has ties to Schoenfeld, and I wouldn't rule him out because of that.

You know who else has played under Schoenfeld? Berube. In fact, Berube has been coached by the Hartford trifecta - Schoenfeld, Paddock and EJ McGuire. But he was also coached by Neilson, Keenan, Wilson, and Darryl Sutter.

Bruce Cassidy played for Hitchcock in Juniors and in the pro's. Few of his pro coaches were also EJ Mcguire, Roger Neilson, Mike Keenan, Jaques Martin and Darryl Sutter, He played alongside Bruce Boudreau and Ron Low in the Oilers organization.

With St. Louis, you never know. I remember when Oates was thought of to be able to make magic of coaching the PP. Moore fits the bill of not being the most talented guy, so he had to learn the game more. I like the thought.

End of the day, they need someone who will coach the team in the same manner and system as the big team has.

Kris Knoblauch? He was a Flyers assistant coach under Hakstol. The Flyers didn't retain him after AV was hired. Knobluach was CMD's junior coach at Erie. He won an OHL championship with Erie. He won a WHL championship with Kootenay. Knoblauch is young guy. 40 years old.

He has head coaching experience in junior. NHL Assistant coaching experience. Knoblauch isn't getting an NHL head coaching job. Edmonton is hiring Tippett. Anaheim will probably hire Eakins.

Like this idea a lot

Adam Oates, currently a skills coach to many stars in the league, he would be good for development imo. Pay him well enough he wants the job like the Leafs did with Keefe

I was listening to the Hockey Central at Noon and the guys were discussing how the Marlies payroll is extremely high for an AHL franchise. The Leafs ownership has no qualms with paying a guy $900k a year to play for the Marlies on an AHL deal. That way the Leafs don't need to waste a NHL contract and the player makes a good salary while living in a beautiful city. Why can't the Rangers do this? They have just as much money

Because they don't have a beautiful city to put them in?

How did you guys like Brett Howden's development?...
His performance last year was up and down. Obviously had the fast start, but then fell off a cliff in December. He really looked like he needed to be sent down. I would have sent him down instead of Lias, personally. Obviously his injury didn't help. He picked it up over the final couple weeks, but all in all it was a tough debut.

In terms of his actual development, it was fine. I didn't think he'd make the team out of camp and contribute in any capacity, really, so what he gave us was a surprise to me. With that said, I didn't like that they left him up and kept giving him minutes when he was looking totally lost for weeks. I was pretty happy with the way we handled out kids last year, with the exception of leaving up Howden, forcing Pionk into the big role that he couldn't handle, and not giving Lias more of an opportunity to thrive. So I can't really say I was displeased with his development, more so just how we handled some aspects of it.

I was moreso asking about his prospect development before he came over to the Rangers, like when he was with Moosejaw

Is anyone else completely annoyed by the fact that Messier is always brought up as a potential choice whenever we have a major organizational opening?

Messier is a Ranger's legend. But from how it appears, he has never been able to make it to the upper echelons of any organization. I have a feeling that might have to do with the rumors surrounding his enormous ego.

Frankly, I want him nowhere near the team from an organizational standpoint.

Well from a purely superficial view, Howden seemed to develop quite well as a juniors player

If we're hinting about who is a favorite for the job, he's an interesting mix of a guy who has done a lot of assistant coaching at the NHL level and then has spent the past 5 years in the CHL coaching kids, so he may have a nice mix of knowing what it takes at the pro level while also knowing how to develop and approach younger players on a development team

Consider this a hot tip, but by no means a guarantee
