Are we counting on finding undrafted free agents or drafted players who defect? Those are nice finds but not guarantees.

It also doesn't change what I said - we probably NEED another top line scoring type now with Kravstov gone.

Soon is smart. Waiting to see what happens is inviting disaster.
3-4 years is a long time, and timing is everything. Would Kravtsov turn into the 60 point forward here? Not sure about that with who is in front of him. There will be opportunities to find a player who fits with our lineup, whether that's a later round pick busting out, a Strome type of acquisition who happens to fit well into our lineup, or even someone else's Kravtsov becoming available when there's more opportunity here.

For a guy who said "character" every other word, Gorton sure knows how to draft them!

The impression was pervasive in the organization, apparently.

David Quinn said on NBCSN that Kravtsov, has "a lot of hockey sense and skill, people rave about his character. He is someone we have talked an awful lot about over the last month and we are ecstatic to get him."
Rangers director of European Scouting Nikolai Bobrov, said "very exciting player, very smart, very skilled, great size and a lot of speed and good character."

But all these fellas who raved about character that has since been found wanting are gone. I couldn't find anything linking Drury to the Kravtsov draft & would like to see it, if it's out there.

Right, a lot more could go wrong in that amount of time, too. We could need way more. Zibanejad could get concussed. Panarin could decline sharply. Etc.

Be proactive and fill the holes you can see coming now rather than just waiting for no reason.

What, we should just take a vacation on player acquisition cause the roster looks good for the next 2-3 seasons? Also.... good for what? Are we certain that this Kreider/Panarin/Zibanejad/Kakko/Laf core is a Cup winner?

We should continue to be seeking elite forward talent. That should never stop.

It's just all the more urgent now that we are short Kravtsov who was a guy we were pencilling into the top 6 and is now going to be missing. That hole will need to be filled. Especially since we also dealt Buch.

We once had a bevy of young future scoring forward talent. That future is drying up fast, whether because it got too expensive (Buch) or it went off the reservation (Kravtsov). But we are left with an older remaining core supplemented by just TWO talents, who we don't know their top-end yet, and we don't know if that's enough. On paper we can see there is a future hole.

Time to go try to fill it with an elite talent.

There's always opportunities to find talent. Let's start now so we don't have to count on long shots later like late round picks breaking out or finding a Strome off the scrap heap.

Let's start now with the better odds - like let's trade some of our assets for a top 6 future forward, or move up in next year's draft or something. Those are the way better odds.

"Was saving Hajek worth pissing off Kravtsov?"

Yes! Kravtsov didn't make the team. He hasn't guaranteed himself a spot. He has a two-way contract. That's hockey. Our front office should have the right to manage as they see fit without having to factor in the emotional responses of players. If you have to cater to a rookie with 20 games so he doesn't go home for the sake of asset management, then you have an issue with that player.

Late seconds are complete lottery tickets. It's likely that late second ends up as nothing.

Any pick is a lottery ticket. Some just have better chances than others.

Someone was going to be the odd man out. If Kravtsov didn't come to compete, that's on him.

I don't agree at all. I do think its very much the NYR's fault that their prospect can't handle the slightest hint of adversity. Obviously Kravtsov's baseline personality can't be attributed to Chris Drury but management of the player, setting his expectations, or, you know, trading him for better value before the situation blows up, all within their control. Or maybe not trading Buchnevich away if Kravtsov wasn't guaranteed that spot (which obviously now he was not).

We don't know what NYR management tell these kids. They could make promises they can't keep to get them to sign in North America, or they could tell them "if you put in the effort, you'll get the chance." We really don't know.

A player like Lias Andersson showed these kinds of issues long before the Rangers drafted him with the medal fiasco. Some scratched their heads. Others praised his attitude. Plenty of guys fall in the draft due to ego or injuries. We're not the first team to move on from a prospect like this.

By all indications, Kravtsov said he learned from his previous experience and was ready to put in the time and effort. He had a lackluster camp, consequently didn't make the team, and now wants a trade. That kind of attitude doesn't bode well.

This may have come completely out of left field. Again, we don't know.

As far as guaranteeing a spot to him without Buch, the writing was on the wall that Buch was going to be a cap casualty. That doesn't necessarily mean Kravtsov was promised a spot. It means the organization looked at the wing depth and felt comfortable letting him go. They got a young wing back as insurance, and they still had Kravtsov, Gauthier, and Kakko. If we paid Buch $5.8 million, we're going to have cap problems. It's a business at the end of the day.

This, along with the Lias Andersson pick, leads me to believe that Gorton equated kicking and screaming with character, just like he equated sucking at hockey with grit.

Pepperidge Farm remembers when LA was such a competitor when he threw his Silver Medal in the crowd....hindsight he's just immature. I think that management team threw out the word character like its some bumper sticker buzz word that corporate came up based on data from some "research team" that never saw the light of day.

Well now that he’s officially back to Krapsoft, I hope they trade him to a miserable place like Winnipeg or Buffalo. With that being said, all kidding aside, the Rangers wasted 2 top 10 picks on European players with attitude problems. Maybe it’s time to clean house in the scouting department. I believe the one scout who begged the Rangers to take Lisa Andersson retired? The Rangers should cut off his pension. The other scout who hyped Krapsoft should be fired too.

Joe Michelletti never has anything bad to say about anyone, but he has certainly slipped little quotes into preseason broadcasts over several years indicating that he doesn't think Kravtsov has what it takes to be good at this level.

Whether that's his personality, effort, or performance, who knows.

Reminds me of the time Joe said he liked what Lias could potentially bring if he just worked on his first five steps.

Lots of people didn't find the medal throwing super impressive.

While the thought of losing kravtsov is ok i am not huge on him losing a spot due to the rangers over reacting and toughening up. I feel all the moves just really took the place of a young players like kravtsov, gautheir, and potentially others.

You can get 1 or 2 but dont need a whole line, blais, goodrew, and reaves. Yikes

That’s not why this is happening.

Drury better be dialing up Doug Wilson's phone to inquire about Hertl. Kravstov could definitely be the main piece to getting Hertl.

I think ideally, the Rangers should be getting players that fit the right roles for the current team, and players that have upside that are going to be baked in about three years. They've done a good job on the former, but probably should be doing a better job about moving talent that doesn't fit the timeline sooner before it causes situations like this. But while this sucks and probably should have been preempted, I don't think it changes the trajectory of the team on the whole.

We have enough toughness in spades.

For some reason they think what Chris Kreider should be (huge and a 25 goal scoring monster) is what every player should be.

Frankly I've seen this team led by Chris Kreider. Seen it since like 2014. That type of player is a myth. And even Kreider doesn't embody it because he's so inconsistent.

You know the best teams have guys like Crosby, Ovechkin, MacKinnon, you know, players who score goals by the bucket load.

There’s 2 idiotic comments in this thread.

First, Hajek had nothing to do with Kravstov. They kept Hajek up because obviously they didn’t want him to pass through waivers. hajek wasn’t taking his place on the team. Nor was Kravstov going to stay up with the NHL team in the press box. Gauthier and Blais were the ones he was competing with and whether you agree or not Rangers management felt that Gauthier outperformed him.

Second, the notion that we got rid of Buch to open up a spot for Kravstov. Buch was a goner the minute Kreider signed that awful contract. There was no way we could afford to keep him. He was a casualty of the cap.

I used to be on team trade Jones but damn if his camp didn't impress the shit out of me.
I dont want to trade him either, dont get me wrong..but a package of him and Krav can net us a pretty nice piece or 2

Gorton had to take ultimate responsibility for the selection, but since Gorton probably didn't know the lad personally, I'm going to put this down to the head of European Scouting making a bad recommendation.
