YEAH! For years some posters pounded their keyboards to death, bemoaning the fact that the previous owner would not spend any money…..

And now, apparently some are angry that GM has been given the green light (wink wink, nod nod) from the future owner to spend money…….

Which way is the EFFing wind blowing???

You've presumably read this thread, and your take-away is that people are angry that money is being spent? If so, I'm happy to disabuse you of that: people aren't angry that money is being spent. They're angry with how it's being spent.

On the one hand, I'm confused how a guy of this pedigree gets 5 years.
On the other hand, I could see an argument, from a strictly mathematical perspective, that signing guys to term before the cap increases dramatically over the next 3-5 years is a strong hedge on the performance bet.

In year 4, if the cap is $90M+ the buyout cost on his contract is only going to be $1M per year for 4 years. So, worst case scenario if the wheels fall off the wagon, the impact is fairly minimal in terms of dead cap.

Not saying I'm in favor of the signing I'm just saying it's not as bad as it appears.

Yeah this is what I was thinking. The cap will go up and we'll hopefully have some of our current dead cap off the books by the time he needs to be bought out.

Still seems a little crazy to be signing guys to contracts you almost know will be bought out. I guess that's what we need to offer to attract free agents.

I'd like to think he'll come in and play well, but his past career performance and our ability to scout/trade for goalies hasn't been stellar.

So many better options available and he commits long term to a guy whos proven absolutely nothing except that he absolutely sucks when hes on a bad defensive team
Tells us who was available that would come here that Ott could afford for a great price & great term that would satisfy everyone on this board?

On an island
We have our number one goalie for the next 2-3 seasons until Soogard or Levi are ready to challenge; and only for 4M.
This is a fine deal by Dorion.

Exactly. Now, we're flush with cash and we can spend AS MUCH AS WE WANT!!!

"Hey, someone is telling me about something called a "salary cap"? Does that mean there's a limit to how much we can spend?"

You either believe in this signing and goalie or you don't. That's it. It's not "oh Dorion can do whatever he wants with millions of dollars and it's no big deal".

The problem some of us have with Dorion is he has made questionable signings and trade decisions since day one on the job. For some of you it's no big deal we're on a tight budget and he blows 6.5M per year on Murray. It's now no big deal we can spend closer to the cap and we blow 5M on Korpisalo.

It's one thing to like this signing. It's another to play it off as "ehhh who cares 5M per year".

Already at the stage where we’re praying for a skyrocketing cap.
We're not praying. It's happening. If you're not aware, there's this thing happening right now called inflation. It will affect the NHL.

That's the whole point of this contract. That's whole point of dishing our 8yr deals left right and center.

Well most have been saying they dont have faith in the guy spending the money and didnt want him making the calls on things like this anymore so I fail to see your point.

Yeah, those bargain contract extensions he signed Josh, Brady and Tim were so bad….right?

Like PD or not, he is the current GM of the Senators and no amount of whining is going to change that anytime soon.

With a 5 year contract offer I’m sure you could find a few.
Tell us who?

We don't know that he will most likely be bought out, that's an opinion & guess not fact at least not yet & won't be for a few yrs.

and have Forsberg/Sogaard **** the bed this upcoming year, wasting away another year of our core guys' contracts? I'm sure Brady and the Brady bunch are over the moon about having a decent goalie come in.
Dont caee. I have as much faith in them as I do in this guy, and they dont cost a big financial commitment and gaurantee this is our guy through our contention years.

Its like signing up for a non answer simply because its the best they could do.

Imagine opting in to paying higher prices. Dorion is such a visionary. Just wow.

Next time you're at the grocery store I hope you're offering to pay more for your groceries. Yell at that cashier! "NO I WANT TO PAY MORE!".
