From Natural Stattrick
at 300+ minutes played 5v5 GSAA rank 38 -0.84 We would love this to be his all situations number.
at 25+ minutes played 4v5 PK GSAA rank 70 -8.50
at 300+ minutes played All Strengths GSAA rank 63 -8.58

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Looking at why Dorion might sign him to a 5 year deal 4m AAV deal.
From 2019-20 thru 2021-22 (3 year)
at 3000+ minutes played All Strengths GSAA rank 57 out of 58 -30.05

at 300 minutes played; In 2022/23 with CBJ All Strengths Rank 19 GSAA 6.87 , with LA All Strengths Rank 27 GSAA 4.87

Now maybe this is just me .. but when 1 year looks like it could be an outlier .. I'd like to see it again before I'd commit to 5 years.

Korpisalo looks to be playing at the level he has played at most of his career with the exception of last year.
Don’t think you have to convince anyone here that Dorion was not a smart manager.
Let’s hope Korpisalo can stabilize things though and give us more of the good games and less of the bad from here on.

Get out of here with facts and numbers. You don't trust Dorion's gut?

Having both goalies on that list is tough. Likely points to the team playing poorly in front of them. Neither guy is bailing them out either though.
It doesn't really point to the team in front of them. GAA and SV% are more indicative of the team in front of them.

Saves above expected zeroes in on where a shot was taken from and the probability it goes in.

Idk. Maybe there's a psychological impact based on the team in front of you.

Look at the PP goal Hughes scored the other night. Personally I don't expect that to go in very often from there. Maybe 20% of the time? But it did. So that's -.8 above expected.

Goaltending is a leading cause of our problems. Forsberg has had a complete reversal of his stats. He was solidly in the positives the past two years and is solidly in the negative this year.

Methot on OverDrive

Worth a listen . Not a lot on Korpisalo. They touch on a few areas. Coaching, Defence, Poor play. Changes needed
Good analysis

Would trade Norris for character in a beat and I tend to agree
Acknowledge its a mess right now
Says they need a Berube or P Roy someone financially independent that is good with young player but passionate and won't fear to sit someone like Brady
Says So many area needs to be addressed lol
Discuss he would trade Chabot or Norris right away for a top4 RHD
Says he's ok with Pinto at 2C 20 goals as a rookie 2C last season

All good points

I admire your optimism that Dorion looked at numbers in evaluating anything.

I mean...I think we all would entertain trading Norris and Chabot for character players, including a top 4 right handed D, but that's gonna be tough with Norris' injury history and Chabot's contract and poor play.

The emergence of Greig has allowed for some options to be opened.

Still...tough tasks ahead for Staois.

6 weeks ago Methot was saying Norris was an essential player for Ottawa to make the playoffs and this summer he said Zub was a bottom pairing Dman. And now he wants to hire Patrick Roy.

When he signed him, one comment from Dorion stuck out to me in particular.

He said something to the effect that they needed a goalie and the options weren't abundant, but they felt they got the best option out of what was available.

He sung Korpi's praises otherwise, sure, but that's not a ringing endorsement to me. Maybe that's accurate, but the best option out of a bunch of not good options might not be such a good idea when it requires such a significant commitment. It just struck me as him saying he got the best of what was available even if what was available wasn't great. Sometimes, doing nothing is your best option.

The 5 years is the issue. You have to be pretty certain you have your guy.

Just ask Edmonton and Campbell .....

Or Detroit and Husso

Or Seattle and Grubauer.

Its been a while since a UFA changed teams at 3+M in salary and it actually worked out. Andersen and Ullmark are the last two I think, 3 years ago.

Chasing goalies on the FA market is generally a recipe for disaster ......

I can't believe Dorion was allowed to sign a goalie for 5 years after the Murray debacle. He screwed this team good and proper.
I'm surprised as well. Dorion thanked the board for allowing the Chychrun trade so there was some oversight to his decisions.

The fact this guy lasted past 2018 is bonkers.

The fact he lasted until 2023, and made close to a dozen fireable offences during that time, is absolutely criminal
Having to buy out 2 contracts that were signed last year is insane (korpi and Hamonic)

Like how bad must you be at evaluating players

Too much term for a gamble, especially at the goalie position where you can find plenty of cheap workable options. Long term deals should be reserved for top tier goalies like in Tampa and NY.
Could have got any cheap goalie and would have did the same or even better than our current duo…
