This gives us more ammunition for a late season trade. I believe either Anderson or Raanta will be part of a trade deadline package now

How? And why? Kochetkov hasn’t proven himself to be a good starter yet and the other two have injury concerns.
Too many teams need a backup and they both fit the bill I believe Kochetkov will have prove himself by trade deadline time.

I always wonder what it's like for a pro athlete when he gets the first check after their rookie deal since most leagues cap the rookie contract. So Kooch is gonna go from probably about 8 grand after taxes to 20 grand after taxes per game check. Nice little raise!

Feels rushed. Way small sample and though he has great raw athleticism his fundamentals can be pure crap at times. I dont know why we felt we had to do this right now. I get that the price only goes up, but if he flames out two million matters. It shouldn’t be a cap crusher but when you’re right up against it you can’t say 2 mill ain’t no thang. This indicates to me they think he’s a backup for the next couple of years unless he steals a job. The fact he’s capitalizing so quickly on this start, needed a new agent and signs so soon after getting one says to me there‘s pressure for him to sign from his side. What happened with the old agent?

Just odd timing with so little sample. Good for him.

It is rushed. But comparatively speaking, as long as Dundon is fine paying the salary, if he sucks it'd be like paying a league minimum guy to play in the AHL. There's very little risk in this contract. In fact the bleakest upside is that it will keep us from signing another Paul Stastny.

Kooch hasn't given any indication he won't be up to being a good starter either. Stats aside and just watching hockey. Guess it's just a matter of what side of the bread jelly goes on.

8th in goals saved above expected, 1st in GSAE/60 among goalies with 5+ starts. The team has really let him down lately, jeez
.334 save % on high danger unblocked shots above what is expected, good for best in the league.

That right there is the sign of a goalie who can absolutely steal you a game when you need him to.

He's god tier on those flurry/scramble chances in front of the net. I don't know that I've seen one go in yet. He does that sitting split thing and takes the entire lower half of the net away.

The stats are cool and all but I think it’s still too early to pencil him in as the #1 next year. I’d like to see the front office find a 1a and let them battle it out. Now if he does prove over the course of this season that he can handle it that’s even more money in the bank to find some scoring help or depth on the back end (a solid LD to help our lord and savior Morrow).

I mean I kind of agree but we are getting into the range where you kind of just have to let the kid prove it. His numbers since he came to NA in both the AHL and NHL have been absurd and the advance stats are beginning to back up the thought that he could be a special player for us. He's consistently putting up highlight reel moments between the pipes and, even better, he looks comfortable. He's keeping us in games when we have no business being competitive and he's having to do all this while dealing with a defense that has been noticeably leaky compared to previous years.

Gut feeling? He's our long term solution in net, and he's our Game 1 playoff starter this year based on merit. Next year we hand him the bulk of starts, get a decent backup, and focus our energy on fixing the offense. Raanta and Freddie will be too expensive for the roles we want out of them going forward.

Agreed, but at $2M they can easily go out and find a platoon goalie to pair with Kochetkov and still be below average in goalie cap numbers.

And that's why while this is a gamble, it's a very reasonable one. Lock him up for 4 years at a low number and he still slots as a backup at worst, more likely platoon with someone else, for 22-23 with potential to become a starter in the future.
