This could be one of the best contracts in the league in a few years.
Worst case, the Canes have a 2M backup, which is probably a bit below league average.

I would say that $2M/year is the going rate for very good backups. That's right around Francouz/Raanta/Nedeljkovic money. The difference here is that they're gambling with term in the case of Kochetkov.

If Andersen stays garbage this year, We could see an entirely new tandem next year. Hell, in a month Kochetkov could be our starter. It's not like it didn't happen with Ward you know.

I'd go out on a limb and say in his super limited sample size, he may have been better than Andersen this year, because andersen has been bad for whatever reason.

If he isnt our starter next year who could be? I doubt we try to START Raanta he just cant handle it. Another UFA pick up?
With Freddie out and Raanta apparently banged up and also not playing amazing I wonder if we don't just give Koochie a serious trial run this season. I could see him getting 30+ starts the rest of the year and if he plays well in that sample size I don't think we'd hesitate to slot him in as starter next year. But I think we'll target a 1b UFA type player who can potentially be a starter if Koochie struggled. Varlamov could be an interesting target who would come relatively cheap. Bring Reimer back? Not a huge fan of the other UFA options this year. Could potentially target a goalie via trade too.

Andersen may well have been playing hurt, though. I want to see more after the Canes decide that he's actually ready before being so decisive.

Here's your starting goalie now. Freddie & Rants are ded.

Varlamov seems like a likely candidate. Or a cheap bob acquisition.

4 years of Kochetkov at 2 mil
and 4 years of Bob at 7 million where Florida pays us to take him.
That seems like a big gamble on Bob who is having a bad year so far. I get that Florida’s defence sucks but still. I’m also unsure of what kind of assets they even have left to send our way.

I’d steer well clear of Bob.

I see Varlamov or Andersen as the most likely short-term candidates for 1A (again, I think that Andersen was playing hurt and I want to see more before I decide so quickly on the best solution). If they want a more long-term solution, I could see the Canes acquiring Bob at something like $5M/year for FC. If Florida wants max cap savings and are willing to fork draft picks, they would likely do that with a cap floor team.

Most of the recent signings around the 2M mark have been question marks like Samsonov, Comrie and Vladar. Very few promising goalies are being locked up at 4 years.

Ned was bridged at 3M, Francouz had a poor showing and took less money to help the Avs re-sign guys like Landeskog, and we all know Raanta's injury struggles.

I looked up goaltender signings for 3+ years in the 1.5-2.5M range and it's slim pickings. The last good goalie that got such a contract? Juse Saros, 3 years at 1.5M back in 2018. Nobody else at 4+ years though.

Good deal! Worst case scenario is he bombs out and can be buried pretty easily, best case he could turn into a starter or at least 1A/B tandem goalie for $2M/yr. I'm not 100% sold on him yet as a full-time starter for us, he still has a lot to learn (he's not straight-up stealing the show like Shesty and Sorokin or similar guys). We still need a starter going forward, a veteran goalie he can at least learn from and split starts with until he can take over as full-time starter. But it's a good deal regardless

Just from the standpoint of the player, I'm far from sold on him as the long-term starting solution, but I obviously like most of what I've seen. And we can bury him or buy him out rather easily if needed with this deal. There's not much potential for it to really blow up in our faces. If we get really lucky, he'll be the starter sometime in the next two years and really give us some flexibility.

Who is next man up from Chicago?

I don’t know about that. It hasn’t been Freddie’s track record (cough Leafs) to play hurt.

It's been an easy comparison for people because they're all Russian but Koochie never should've been compared to either of these guys. Wayyyy different paths. Both those guys held down a KHL starting gig for many years and dominated in it before coming to NA in their mid 20s. Koochie was really only a starter in the K for 1 year, and while he did excel for that year, his path before that was not so consistent/hot. Then he came over here much earlier in his development than those other guys.

I think Koochie has the potential to get to that level but he needs a few more years of consistent playing time which he really hasn't had in his career up to this point. Even last year when he got a bunch of games it was across 3 different teams with an interruption in the season...

Agreed, that's why I say I'm still not completely sold on him as a starter. He was good after a rough start in the KHL, but he wasn't stealing the show there like Shesty/Soro were. He did great in the AHL once he got settled but that should be expected given KHL > AHL. Honestly if he can prove to be a reliable enough backup @ $2M, that's a win in and of itself
