Saginaw might not be the best trade partner for Schmidt is far as the Rangers are concerned. They already have three OA’s and we may be expected to take one back.

Also, they already have two OA’s on D. Do they want another since F-Loukas may be the OA they’d prefer to part ways with?

A better trade partner may be Missy. They have an open OA spot and could use a veteran addition to their young D corps.

Could we get a picks return from Missy comparable to Lleyton Moore?
2nd ‘24
3rd ‘24

Forgo the 8th to have these picks be in ‘24.

I have no idea what the return is going to be for one of the Ranger OA's, but the recent Connor Lockhart trade brought in an unimpressive pair of picks IMO. I expected more.

Limited destinations for a surplus of decent OA's this season? Maybe the market slightly improves at the trade deadline? I hope to be wrong, but at this moment, I'm likely not quite as optimistic as others......but maybe that changes a couple months from now.

For all those saying they weren’t a fan of Schmidt, I think it’s only fair to see how he looks under this coaching staff.
Schmidt is a prototypical NHL defenseman with his size and strength. He wasn't really developed properly in his time here IMO. Defensive coaching here was non existent. Most fans were excited at the prospect of Schmitd being on the roster originally. The majority of OHL defensemen are not close to making it in the NHL when they graduate. Jussi will see the flaws in Schmidt's game and work on them. If he ends up being traded it will make him a more valuable asset. If they decide he is the man more power to him.

The market will change as it gets closer to the deadline. GMs will have a clearer view of the situation going forward. Some will look to make deals looking to the future. With two squads in the Mem Cup one would think it will be quite a few trades made this year. A lot will depend on the number of high end players offered up across the whole league. Rangers are just one team of many in the mix. It will be an interesting deadline.

I don't feel that we have ever seen Schmidt play to his potential and that only got worse under Dennis. He seemed to to pick up his game in the playoffs. And he's coming here with a "message" from Tampa Bay. I do believe that having Jussi and his coaching team here (and the incredible "rebuild" season so far) gave TB confidence in sending Schmidt here.

Just to comment on people saying that they don’t really like Schmidt is because he is a very large player who really doesn’t use his size to his advantage.

Can anyone remember one massive hit he has thrown over the last two years? Or any fight that he beat someone up and it would have made the league take notice? I can’t remember any. He doesn’t play to what should be his biggest strength.

Clean slate with a superior coaching staff starts this week. We need to give him a chance.

Schmidt issue I think is his skating/mobility. With the hap hazard systems we had here from the forwards back to dmen, his weaknesses were highlighted. Schmidt seemed to have his head on swivel and started to lose confidence and started to run around. He probably carried his bad habits that were reinforced here to the pros. Now Schmidt is now paying the price now.
Hopefully with Jussi and his staff these issues gets resolved.

Habs the point posters are trying to make is regarding development of players under the old regime. You are correct in your assessment about Schmidt not using his size. Wideman was a terrible defensive coach here. Maybe he was directed to coach a certain way he disagreed with by the "head coach". I really don't know a hell of a lot about hockey systems at all yet you could see the claring defensive mistakes being ignored by the previous coaching staff. He was drafted so someone saw something in him that maybe needs to be brought out. I am hoping he steps up now that he has had a taste of what it take to be a pro. Maybe it is what it is and we see more of the same. Jussi won't put up with players that don't follow his lead.

How do people feel about the new Remembrance Day jerseys?

I like the logo but kind of wish there was more colour going on.

The return of Schmidt has me thinking. Hopefully, our coaching staff can right his ship, so to speak. We may have the stud OA D that Schmidt was supposed to be when we drafted him. Originally, he was 1st round ranked in this league but slipped because of the NCAA / NTDP card.

If they do get him on track, should we try contending this year? A year where there is no super team and a year the OHL is hosting? There is a lot of talk about the direction this team will go in. Unless this team crashes in the next few weeks, the possibility of contending has to be on the table.

But we have no assets to buy. 2nd. 3rd. 3x4ths. That’s it. But we have young players on the roster.

If we decide we need three big pieces to contend, two forwards and a D, we have just added a forward and D for free in Mesar and Schmidt.

So if we need one more big add. How do we get it done?

Outside the box thinking here. So, don’t get excited. The following is just a thought.

I’ve been advocating the trade of Rehkopf this year to maximize return, get a 1st rounder along with picks.

But what if we buy, but in such a way that has us selling off everything that isn’t nailed down next year to gear up for 26-27? As it stands now, it’s possible to make that one big addition.

We don’t have many picks to move, but we have youth. Could we move one of Reid / Romano, (EASY!!! Easy now!!! I said it was just a thought), for a high end ‘05, to get better this year but give us another high end asset to move next year?

The reverse of a Rehkopf deal, in other words. Is there a team out there selling / rebuilding, who may put a high end ‘05 on the market?

For example:
Would Brantford entertain moving RW-Nick Lardis in such a deal? Involving Romano? In a “pick light” deal? We don’t have many picks but, MM could get inventive where, say, Rehkopf finds his way to Brantford in the off season? For their 1st rounder (8th overall) ‘07 RC- Jake O’Brien? In another “pick light” deal.

After the dust settles:
Lardis for Romano,
then,
Rehkopf for O’Brien.
Rehkopf trumps Lardis and that would be reflected in the picks involved in the deal.

The return for Rehkopf wouldn’t be as fruitful as expected if we sell him this year, but we’d have held onto him for a run this year, yet still be able to move him for an 07 1st rounder, what I’ve been advocating for all along.

Depending on the Martin diagnosis, I’d assume Motew would be the odd OA out? We have a couple months to see what Schmidt has to offer. But assuming he is the guy, we get what we can for Motew. Based on the Lockhart return, I wouldn’t expect much. Maybe he’s part of the Lardis deal and he goes to Brantford, who has an open OA spot.

Here’s how we’d look post trade deadline (mix and match):

Swick. Rehkopf. Lardis.
Martin. Sop. Mesar.
Ellinas. Lam. Miseljevic.
Bottineau. Mercer. Pugliese.
Morey. Stark.

Brzustewicz. Andonovski.
Schmidt. Campbell
Hamara. Reid.
Scott.

Parsons
Malboeuf.

Returnees off this roster we’d sell off next year, who’d definitely bring significant value:

Rehkopf (deal mentioned above)
Lardis
Andonovski.

OA’s Miseljevic, Parsons and Swick would bring some value as well.

Could moving these guys next year bring us the return that selling off Rehkopf, Brzustewicz and others would if we sold them this year? Or something close? As long as it’s something close, we’d have “had our cake and ate it too” by being able to contend this year.

When I say “pick light” deals involving Lardis and Rehkopf: I have us agreeing with Brantford that we preserve that 2nd ‘24 (Erie). That gets reflected in the off season deal. We need that pick to aid in having a healthy 08 group going forward.

So,

To Brantford:
Luca Romano
Simon Motew
3rd. 2x4ths.

To Kitchener:
Nick Lardis.

Off season:

To Brantford:
Carson Rehkopf

To Kitchener:
Jake O’Brien
2nd ‘25. 3rd ‘25. 3rd ‘26.

Rehkopf trumping Lardis gets us better picks than the picks we send to Brantford for Lardis. And, it allows us to keep the 2nd ‘24 (Erie).

Hey, I’m all about selling in some fashion. That’s my #1 option. But because of our early success, it’s a direction like this that MM surely must be contemplating.

Moving Romano is very unlikely, but not 100% impossible. Is swapping out Romano (11th overall) for O’Brien (8th overall) a saw off? Sure we’ll have traded off a 1st rounder but we’d get one back. Going forward, our 07 group is still very healthy. We’d get good return selling of graduating players next year which should set us up nice in the future.

Following this thought process, just wondering what your roster would look like to start next year? You have a significant number of graduations in the off season and you have already added 4 players from your 2023 draft class. Is it feasible to find enough remaining players from your 2023 draft class to fill in what you will need next season?

Interesting take ES, and I have no doubt MM is looking at all angles, including something similar to what you propose.

My concern is the 3rd line. I always had the impression that any successful contender would typically have 3 lines of older players - i.e. mostly 18, 19 and 20 year-olds. I'm liking Lam and Ellinas and their respective futures on this team. I'm just not sure how this team will do in the playoffs with a somewhat young 3rd line. In an ideal world, older guys like Mercer and Morey would step up from here, and be more productive than they currently are so that they wouldn't be projected lower than the 3rd line. Maybe Pugliese could be mentioned here too, but I do like the role he tends to be playing.

Having said this, I'm basing the above comment without confirming past line-ups of say, last year's Memorial Cup contenders for instance. It just seems to me that those contenders would have been older overall. Maybe someone could bust the myth :) .

Old news but I just wish we would not have bought last year as an 8th place team.
You could tell we were not going to go far in the playoffs & surprised we beat Windsor.
Look at the draft picks we would have to add a couple great players for this team.
Don't go over buying and we would still have more draft picks left than we have now.
Plus this would give this team depth and a really good chance to go for it.
The new coaching staff has really made a hugh difference here.

When I said mix and match, maybe a top six swaps into the third line, moving Miseljevic back up, to give us more depth. Shuffling positions may work too. And, that fourth line could become some version of a playoff grind line. Maybe not a threat to score, but be utilized to shut down the opposition’s top line. Maybe.

We would be working with limited resources.

2 months in and I’m already tired of watching Owen sound. Wish they’d change it to 3 games against the eastern conference teams.
