Arpon Basu (who for some reason gets a lot of flack on here and I am always puzzled as to why but I digress...).
He's a moralizing grand-stander who offers next to zero insight despite his access to the team. He gets zero scoops, no exclusives, very few interviews -- and when he does get interviews he acts as a stenographer more than an interviewer. I find his work almost disrespectful to the reader, such is his lack of insight.

And how he responded to the Mailloux pick was disgraceful in my opinion. It's funny he chooses to be partisan and have a hot take only when it's a culture war issue -- otherwise he repeats whatever the prevailing wisdom/Habs organization says without question.

Byron won't be ready for camp. His recovery is a lot slower than expected. So chances are Habs place him on LTIR to start the season.

Around the draft (July 7), he did an interview where he said his injury isn't fully healed yet and that the expectation was that at the time of this interview, he'd have already started training. But he hadn't been able to yet.

Hope this is the case but it only solves our cap issue to start the season and allows us to have time to monitor Price more. If he goes on LTIR as well and it's placed after the season starts, that gives us the cap flexibility we need. However, if Price doesn't and Byron comes back in Nov/Dec (lets say), the tight cap issues still remain.

Yup. The Habs will need to make room through trades. Not just cross their fingers to use LTIR relief.

LTIR aka a place where you stash big salaries thanks to the collusion of medical staff on payroll, allowing basement teams to collect 1st rounders for cap dumps.

Which begs the question — does any team really have cap issues if they have the right medical people on board?

When does camp open? Surely Dach will have his contract sorted out, and a couple of vets will be moved, or put on waivers in October....

He said in an interview that came out yesterday that it will be sorted out in the next couple of days or week

Friedman in the 32 Podcast said he heard a rumor that Habs would have signed Dach last weekend, but he sad he was told it was premature. He said they're talking different contract scenarios, from a 2-year bridge deal to a longer term deal like a 4-year deal. They're discussing different contract options.
I'd be good with either scenario.

4 years would bring him straight to UFA, no? I think 2 or 3 years is good, or 6+

I wouldn't mind a long-term contract because they're cheap to buy out before the age of 25, so if he's not meeting expectations in a few years, just buy him out

I always find it funny how fans/media casually just throw out buy out scenarios.

As though Teams/Owners are just lining up to cut buyout cheques for players.

Nobody's lining up to do that, that's a stupid comment

But risk/reward it could make sense with the right player. It's what Carolina is doing with Kotkaniemi, if he reaches his potential then they've got him at a great AAV right through his prime. If not, then the buyout is only $850k a year

Well firstly, I wasn't specifically only referring to your comment...but just comments I see a lot how teams can just buyout players, as thought that's a regular thing.

Secondly, the way you presented it haphazardly, it did come off like you just think it's something teams handle like any other transaction.

So....

I think it's about the situation, but generally speaking, I don't think teams/owners really like doing buyouts. It's a last resort type of situation and it's usually because the team needs to make another subsequent move and needs the cap space.

It's not one of those situations where a deal with a player didn't work out and after a few years the teams decides to cut bait. The salary implications are too prohibitive usually.
