It doesn't have to be because of a trade. Can just be when they start producing. Couturier and Hertl didn't start producing until the age of 25.

Big centers can take longer to develop.
Hertl and Couturier produced at a young age in the Czech league and the Q respectively. Dach was not a great pt producer even in junior. He was also drafted because of his size. Chicago knew that and that's why they traded him away and drafted 5"9 Nazar instead.

What you see is what you get. A player won't start gaining skills that they never had to begin with. I really hope that I'm wrong but I don't think Dach (or Slaf) will become point producers in the NHL because they've never done it before. Hughes might have screwed us over more than Bergevin ever did if Wright or Cooley become elite scorers.

Yes we are deep on LD, that's true.....
The best we can do is to get a flyer on a project?

With that 13th overall pick or Romanov....we couldn't went after a guy like Dubois instead, even? Hell, Debrincat cost the 7th overall pick and he's not a project but a bonified 40 goals scorer and for the 13th we get a project?

We just paid a premium to get that player, it better pay up cause everything is about potential.
People laughed at Canes for giving up a 1st and 3rd for Kotkaniemi but it was a very low 1st as we give up aalmost a top 10 pick + for similar project.

We got Caufield and Guhle in those ranks of drafting.....

That's only great asset management if Dach becomes a solid contributor, if not it's terrible when you consider the price we paid. We're banking on potential, better work out cause we paid the price for a 60 points player
He's not a project. He's 21 years old and is 3rd in points from his draft class where he was selected #3 overall. He's still early in his development and had a huge playoff in the bubble two years ago. He's the same age as Caufield.

Don't judge the trade based on the Debrincat trade. That was just stupid. Chicago's the worst organization in sports right now and just be happy we also took advantage of their fire sale.

I'm on the fence on whether Kirby Dach will amount to much of anything, and I absolutely loved Romanov.

That being said, I think most Habs fans really started to overrate him. He is what he is. A hard-nosed D with a great attitude who's going to play about 20 minutes a game and lack the hockey IQ to be an offensive contributor.

Difficult to overrate a bruising young D who can eat 20 good minutes of ice time.

I don't see how Romanov is any more of a "legitimate NHL player" than Dach. They played him a ton last season and while he looked good at times, his results were pretty awful. Like a lot of Bergevin's acquisitions, I have questions about his toolbox. I'm not enamoured with Dach either, but I think there's more there than with Romanov and a lot more upside. Here's some player tracking from both:

Those charts are an absolute abomination.

With Dach, how was he even drafted 3OV? I didn't follow the 2019 draft but his WHL numbers are very average.

Anybody care to enlighten me? Thanks.

He big (nevermind that he doesn't use his size) and he skate. The same people who drafted him are the same people who let Caufield fall to 15th overall,

Because he has limited offensive upside. He’s at best a #3 defenceman and the team has a wealth of defensive prospects. Conversely, they have a dearth of high quality centre prospects. Dach lacks dynamic skating but can be a serviceable #2 centre who brings excellent size to the team. Dach provides a cautionary tale about drafting a player in the top 5 who has recognized skating limitations. Its the reason Wright fell. In fact, I think he was over drafted at 4 like Dach was over drafted at 3. Some GMs never learn.

Dach is a good skater

I judge the trade as we gave a freaking 13th overall pick so I expect nothing less than a 60 points players for it as most 60 points players in the NHL don't even cost that much and since we drafted to compensate the pick of Slaf, it need to be at center.

His record high is 26 points that's while playing 18:00 minutes a night with tons of PP
He's 34.6 in faceoffs since he entered the league

If he's not a project, then we got royally f***ed.

Watched the video again.

1. Awful shot
2. Pretty good back hand
3. His size and speed his hard to contain. D-man in the video have trouble holding him back when he gains a step on them.
4. Takes a split second too long to move the puck.

But that video was him at 18 years old right?

I definitely think it's possible that Dach ends up improving over the next couple of seasons - hopefully the trade works out for the Habbies. I also think Romanov might not play as much on a better d-corps, and while he could also keep improving, it's possible that the Habs got the better player. Let's hope anyway...

This trade is warming up to me. I do feel upset though, as Romanov was my favourite player, but if he can play 20 minutes a night and isn't a liability, and becomes a threat on the PP in front of the net it is a fair price to pay for him.

I'm not sure how we fix our d. it's awful. Toronto's d looks better than our d at this point. maybe not, but it feels close.

Complain like little bitches all you want, he's one of us now. I cheer for him to realize his potential.

Oh, I'll cheer for him, but if both Slaf and Dach (oddly, rearrange the letters and you get Chad) don't pan out, this new management team will get many critics lined-up. It will be their death knell.

If they both bust HuGo is done, UNLESS they draft a real superstar next year, which takes out the spotlight from those mistakes.
