Wow you can feel the awkwardness from the commentators about his trade. They seems as dumbfounded as I am right now.

Instead of drafting a center we traded one of our more solid defenseman for a center.

I reiterate, the comparable will be Dach and Wright. If Wright pans out and Dach does not flourish within the next two years, this will be godfully awful.
So if dach somehow manages to equal Wright, what does that make slafkovsky?

If we can draft one of Fantilli, Bedard or Carlsson next year….we would be set for the next 15yrs

we will be fighting for a top 3 pick no doubt, that's what made the passing over of Wright more acceptable to grab a winger. Without a goalie, this team is hooped anyways and the blueline is brutal

Chicago wasn't trading him for anything less than a top 15 pick...so it's not fair to say they didn't want him.

But San Jose traded 11 for 27, 34, and 45.

So we could have had Dach, via 26, 33, and something else, for San Jose's 11, instead of giving up a young established top 4 D on an upward trajectory to possibly be more.

He's 21 ans has play

He's 21 and has played 152 NHL games lol
I don't understand why they traded Romanov. I just don't.
Because he has limited offensive upside. He’s at best a #3 defenceman and the team has a wealth of defensive prospects. Conversely, they have a dearth of high quality centre prospects. Dach lacks dynamic skating but can be a serviceable #2 centre who brings excellent size to the team. Dach provides a cautionary tale about drafting a player in the top 5 who has recognized skating limitations. Its the reason Wright fell. In fact, I think he was over drafted at 4 like Dach was over drafted at 3. Some GMs never learn.

Still super upset about losing Romanov but it looks like a lateral move. We had too many LD and we needed a C who is like 6'4 and can keep up with Slafkovsky.

Of course I have and he isn't that good. Why would a rebuilding team like Chicago jettison a 21 year old 6'4 RH center?
He showed good things in his rookie year (clearly rushed) and has regressed since.
Why did Chicago jettison a 24-year-old 40-goalscorer?
Why did Chicago give up so much (pick 6, 12, Boqvist) for Seth Jones after having missed the playoffs?

Guhle, Barron, Harris, Mailloux, etc.

Romanov is solid on D, but brings zero offense.

You need to give good players to get good players.
That's ok, but at least give Dach, who has no arbitration rights, only a cheap one year bridge deal and tell him to show his worth, not a 6 year $33M deal.

When a GM dangles a player barely 21 that was drafted that high...that says alot

Yeah they don't seem to have a plan but Dach seems to have regressed the past 2 years. His skating is perhaps average to slightly above average and it shows.

It’s great we have a lot of defensive depth, but we’re bottom 5 in the league as a team and just loss Romanov, a guy looking like a potential number 2. feels like drouin for sergachev or macdonagh for Gomez. These deals don’t seem to end well for us.

...he has not regressed, he was put in a situation he shouldn't have been in...the wrist surgery and losing most of last year hurt his development this season of course, but he was plugged right in against Top Pairing D that he shouldn't have been facing on a team that was dreadful, like US dreadful, this season...he is not a run-and-gun offensive dynamo (like he was placed in by the Hawks), he's a smart big-bodied 200-ft player with good wheels for such a big body and he did look to pass faaar too much when playing with Kane/DeBrincat, two rush scorers (again, not Dach's game)...in Montreal, he can play at his pace in the Middle Six and gain some confidence while growing at a more defined pace...yes, he needs to put on some muscle, although the kid is damn strong on the puck now, but I am excited to see him in the Bleu, Blanc, et Rouge; I've been a big fan of his game for some time and I think this was a very good move going forward for us...time will tell, but this was the one move today that I'm really big on (I too had Wright #1 OA and am not completely sold on Slafkovsky but I trust HuGo so far)...

Absolutely love this trade.

Suzy and Cole

Dach and Slaffy

Basically...

Slaf (6'4 PF winger) + Dach (6'4 center with Getzlaf potential...gritty but maybe not as mean as Getzlaf)

vs

Shane Wright
+ Romanov + picks.
(the 13th overall pick for Mtl could have been Nazar??, so...you could also look at it like that...Dach vs Nazar/Romanov?! sort of?!! Or, Dach/CENTER instead of Wright/CENTER! Anyways...I like Dach's potential, plus he's 6'4!! huge/tall a la Getzlaf!).

I was all "pain for Shane" all season long (I'll shut up now!! lol!).
I'll try my best to fully support Slaf...and I was already a Dach fan.
(Dach already has 6 playoff pts in 9 playoff games...already pretty good...I like 'em PLAYOFF CENTERS).

I hope you are right.
I watch alot of Hawks games and he didn't impress me most nights.
I hope MSL finds a way to help him get to another level.

Ultimately, I think Dach will prove to be a useful trade asset. The trading of Romanov for Dach was excellent asset management. Bottom line, we are only at the start of the re-build. The trading of several front line players at the TDL was the first act. This draft was act II. Its good to see that after decades of managerial incompetence, we have a management team in place with a plan and a vision for the future. Quite a refreshing change.

Hawks fan here. Dach is an enigma. The skill is undoubtedly there. Surprisingly good skater. One can make the argument he was rushed, then broke his wrist, and that he’s still so young and a victim of circumstances. On the flip side, he has a terrible shot, really doesn’t use his big body to his advantage, and doesn’t show much inclination to, which gets really frustrating. Also leaves himself way too vulnerable, taking colossal hits. Derek King in not so many words questioned Dach’s heart. Also terrible at faceoffs. A number of Chicago fans had given up on him. Others, like myself, weren’t quite there, but it’s put up or shut up time.

Seems like a nice kid, and I hope he works out well for you. Will be interesting.

It's all about improving his foot speed. If he can, people will be saying: Romanov who? If not, there are no shortage of elite centers available in 2023. It was good gamble as in my eyes, a Romanov level defenceman can be readily found in free agency.

We trade Romanov to get a under acheiving center but could of simply drafted a center witout losing the asset on defense....

Am I to understand that Dach >>> Wright ? Because that sure feels like that's how it was evaluated too!

My head hurts Wright now...
It's more like Dach+Safkovsky > Wright+Romanov in their head... Time will tell

"He is big, skates well and is strong on the puck, a trait that should get even better as he matures. Is an excellent passer but must learn to take more shots in order to keep opponents from dropping off him in coverage...."

6 playoff pts in 9 playoff games (as a 19yr old).

Low relative to what he would have cost not too long ago.

Romanov is tough to give up. The 3rd and 4th are meaningless when had as many picks as we did.
Dach #3 overall 2019 after 3 seasons ages 18-20
GP 152
G 19
A 40
P 59 0.39 ppg
Acquired for a #38 (Romanov), #66, #98

Kotkaniemi #3 overall 2018 after 3 seasons ages 18-20
GP 171
G 22
A 40
P 62 0.36 ppg
Given up for #27 (Carolina), #92
