Oh, and so you know, I will be sacrificing a chicken before tomorrow’s first game for the 67’s post-deadline. Voodoo is helpful.

Chickens are novice level for true "Voodoo", if you're really serious you'll do as I do and look for Mimes, does eveyone a favour plus their surprised and quiet reaction is quite entertaining without drawing attention from the neighbours... so far...

As to the players on the bench laughing and enjoying things. I think that due to the new society rules there is only so much a coach can do.

Players laughing it up on the bench when they’re down 8-0 goes together with how they were yapping back at hackling fans. It shows a lack of focus and complete absence of discipline.

Where are the leaders on the team to step up and get control of their teammates letting them know that kind of garbage isn’t acceptable?

Dude. Ninja’s don’t tell people they are ninja’s…. Why would you release the hounds like that? Speak in metaphors…

Donnie, I think you need to take a chill pill. First, what happens on the bench is the purview of the coaching. You and I have no idea what was said in the dressing room or on the bus.

I can remember an Oshawa team that had the same issues, and every team goes through it.

Give it a rest and go back to the Gens thrread.

Something was definitely said in the dressing room during the second intermission.

Because after Heyes scored to cut the deficit to seven, he came back to the bench and kept his head down the entire time. Didn’t even try to make eye contact despite the fact that many of us were all standing to give him a rousing ovation.

Quite the contrast to how engaging he was during the 2nd period.

I think you are reading too much into it. Mann likely tore a strip off him during the intermission and blew his eardrums out and couldn’t hear you….

So many parents have literally never "heard" from their mime children, and truthfully no ones ever speaks up for them. It's safe, on a side note, it's a shame about the local petting zoo...

Carry on...

say it for the people in the back!

This isn’t peewee church league, my friend. Heyes and Poole will both be 20yrs old in a few months. If they were good enough, they could be playing at the professional level now. Do you think NHL/AHL/ECHL fans refrain from heckling rookies because “they’re just kids”?
Well if they were playing professional hockey, they’d be professionals. I don’t think chirping them is very cool either, but it’s probably more appropriate than chirping ohl players. If you want to cheer or boo knock yourself out. But intentionally trying to irritate these kids enough that you can get them to react to you is a lowlife thing to do. Would you like to be at work and some jabroni from Oshawa is in your ear all night calling you a loser, and when you have enough and tell him to zip it, he then goes on the internet and brags about how you have no composure. TLDR; these kids can’t defend themselves, they can’t chirp back at you, so watch the game and be respectful.

It’s a developmental league. It’s part of the development. Besides, it is better than listening to Moms and Dads at the local rinks with 10 year olds.

Of course the “kids” can defend themselves - - play better and watch how quiet the crowd gets. The players have total control of the outcome based on their performance.

Personally speaking, I’ve always enjoyed the hostile environment of road games. It’s nice to win at home, but there’s nothing more satisfying than silencing an opposing crowd and watching people filing out early.

My mantra has always been that when you’re winning you can say whatever you want but when you’re losing just STFU and take your medicine.

If I make a critical mistake or a dumb decision at work I absolutely expect to face the consequences, whether that’s being screamed at, being disciplined or being sued.

I actually had a long and well structured reply for you with many valid points and in decent language. However, in the end I 've decided to say that you are an idiot. Your takes on hockey range from asinine to clueless. You probably played a year or two of rep hockey in Oshawa or maybe Bowmanville and got your ass handed to you by Whitby or Markham on the regular so you decided to just play houseleague "for the fun". You watch a lot of hockey, read a lot of blogs and forum posts and have become an expert on all things from the OHL to NHL - and to top it all off you think because you can post some crap anonymously on some random board that you have the right to be an ass. Well....you do have the right to post whatever you want on a board, you have the right to boo or taunt "kids" as they play hockey and you can be as big of a jerk as you want. I however can still think you are an idiot.

Do you enjoy being a nasty customer when some poor 17 year old is learning how to work at Tim's part time? Or maybe when you see a "driver in training" you tailgate, flash your highbeams and honk? Or maybe you enjoy teasing a new mom at the park with a crying kid because she's having a bad day? Seems like a great way to be a human. Isn't there enough crap floating around this toilet of a world that adding additional stuff like taunting or heckling a kid playing hockey seem just petty and unnecessary ? Listening to middle aged losers that buy OHL tickets yell at you and make fun of you really doesn't need to be part of the development

Maybe the coach told him that there is likely someone up there who is a jealous and insecure person that must have an awful life for them to be treating them like that -- so just leave them be so that they can sit in their adult diapers uncomfortable in their precious seats?

I recall in the last game of last season after Miedema scored his 4th goal of the game in a rout of the Gens by Kingston there were Gens fans yelling at him for being a showboat or for Butler(may have been another gen being spurred on to do something) to knock his teeth out -- so perhaps a bit of looking in the mirror needs to occur.

Trash talk is part of the sport. Just because I don’t partake in it, doesn’t mean others should not. There is a line that should not be crossed of course. But, at the same time, the kids are on the ice trash talking each other, fans trash talk, coaches trash talk, officials trash talk…. They do it to get under the skin of the competition. Hell, even the players trash talk other players on the team. It is part of the culture.

I do not condone people screaming at kids but if it qualifies as trash talk based on performance etc, it is not off limits IMO.

Trash talk is not a part of the culture in the drive thru at Tim Hortons.

You clearly don't go to drive-thrus in South Oshawa.

Of course trash talking is part of the culture. There is no issue with that happening on the ice. My issue is adults who decide to make it personal by trash talking "kids" on the ice. I am using kids because while there are 19-20 year olds there are also 16-17-18 year olds - many of whom aren't mature enough and definitely not experienced enough. While I think heckling a ref is silly - at least they are adults and that is truly part of sports culture.

At least 4 people believe that line was crossed in this instance (player, assistant coach, trainer, usher). I am guessing that line got crossed, even if the OP doesn't know where the line is.

Using an argument that because players can trash talk, that the obnoxious 40 year old jackass in the stands can also trash talk is ridiculous. There is absolutely zero excuses for chirping kids playing a game. It makes you look like an asshole. It’s not part of development, because if they’re NHL players you still look like an asshole. Just because you bought a ticket doesn’t give you the right to say whatever you want. And no, it doesn’t make the “enviroment” better for the road team, it makes it annoying for the players and the fans that have to listen to it.

Well getting yelled at by your boss or coach is vastly different then getting yelled at by some idiot that bought a ticket to watch you work , just so he could give you witty chirps and then go home and brag about how he managed to get under your skin.

It builds character. That has always been my opinion.

Kids have always needed to face adversity while being attacked from multiple angles. Kids today are bubble wrapped and protected from all of the dangers out there but it doesn’t mean those dangers do not exist. It just means they are ill equipped to deal with them.

Part of sport is dealing with adversity and building teamwork. PArt of that process is processing outside static. Those that deal with it in limited amounts at a young age are better prepared for it when they are older.

When I am on the golf course and you have that one jackass that needs everything as quiet as possible before they swing the club and get pissed off if someone moves a finger CLEARLY didn’t get heckled while playing a competitive sport. I used to have people screaming at me while I was on the ball diamond when I was a kid. I am 100% better for it. I can deal with a hell of a lot more distractions and uncomfortable situations partly because I wasn’t sheltered.

So, although, on the surface it seems like you are doing kids a favour by sheltering them from clowns, you aren’t. Sometimes it is good to have small doses of adversity and distractions.

Again, if it crosses a line, then sure. I agree it isn’t right. But heckling without offensive language that is centred on performance is fine. Coaches tear strips off players all the time. Why is it that when a small group fo fans hackle, all of a sudden hell freezes over and we are aghast? It makes no sense to me at all.

Stop trying to bubble wrap kids. They are now weak af. Put them through the wringer! They will grow stronger.

When I coached a group of '99's I had twin brothers who came from an extremely abusive home. Their father was an alcoholic whom we banned from our organization events and the league banned from attending any games. He used to beat, yell, humiliate the boys. Before he was banned from coming to the rinks he used to yell at his kids every time they missed the net, lost a puck battle, passed instead of shooting etc.... These kids were good hard working players but would essentially shut down if I ever raised my voice in practice to get their attention. Learning about how different kids deal differently with various aspects of life helped me become a better coach. I don't think yelling and name calling would help them build more character? It's worth noting that one went on to become a successful OHL and CIS now usports player the other is in us playing in AA baseball.

Just curious, cause I don't golf.
Is heckling permitted/acceptable ?
