It's not like DL drafted Aki Bergs but yeah aside from Doughty they aren't elite.

I share your concerns as well regarding Luc, who probably was behind the firing of DL and bringing the country club/retirement on the beach culture back.

Where does the conviction come from? He's already brought it back? How did he bring that back? When? What is telling you that?

Kings miss the playoffs again (good chance of that happening) you will get to see what Blake is made of.

John Stevens no doubt will be fired, that's step one.

Why even hire Stevens if he gets one year with a bunch of players that have to prove themselves again? Where does that conviction come from? Why would he be fired?

I actually think the team is slower.

Everyone of the (core) is a year older, and the Kings did not add a significant Forward that has superior skill/speed.

I don't feel that the core's speed will regress to the point where the whole team is slower next season.

I say "more speed" due to a couple different forwards/d-men from the opening night roster last season. They don't have to have superior skill/speed than the fastest NHL'er: just more speed than King/Iginla/McNabb. Toffoli being healthy will help as well.

Reason Stevens would be fired is that our team is a playoff team, with a healthy quick and new direction, if they miss the playoffs, he'd be fired.

If they miss for the 3rd time in 4 years, I have a hard time saying that they are a playoff team.

The players got Sutter off their back. Time for them to put up or shut up.

Maybe he'd get fired. Players would be moved regardless, however.

If they miss the playoffs again, stick a fork in it. It's over folks. Trade Doughty, Muzzin, Martinez, Carter, Pearson, Toffoli, and Quick. Also explore the market for Kopitar, though I doubt anyone would trade for him.

And don't give me the Pittsburgh excuse, they were making the playoffs.

Based on what? A playoff team is a team that makes the playoffs. This team has been underachieving for the last 3 yrs. One playoff appearance/win in 3 yrs isn't good, isn't elite and doesn't deserve to live off it's reputation. And given the talent in the Central, finishing 4th is not a guarantee you are in the playoffs. And right now, I can't see them finishing 4th.

Even with an upthrust in offense I expect from TT and TP, don't forget they are transitioning to a new system, so they will be giving up more scoring chances, and there are very few gimme games in todays league. Last year, 4 teams in the Metro finished with over 100 pts. And that could happen in the Central or Pacific this year. If a team doesn't get off to strong start, it's just that tough to catch up.

Doughty aside, they have an aging core and a bottom 6 that needs to step it up. Quick a very talented goaltender, but his career GAA(2.26 range) mirrors his last 3 yrs and it's not top 5 in the NHL anymore. He also had a team playing a stifling defense in front of him, Stevens system will be different and you have rookie d potentially.

Kopitar said post firing/hiring (La kings insider) he wasn't going to change his style to be more offensive, that being a good 2 way player is what he feels is important. And if he's going against to the top lines, and there are some very talented ones in the Conf and League , that 25 second shift, he's not in the same position as a #1 C who is a scoring forward first. But I'm hoping in training camp, when the new system in implemented, he will get some wind in his sails and change his staid ways.

I think Blake and Luc know exactly who this team is and who their competition is. I think they'd like to upgrade w/o making a costly error. And undoing DL's errors and replenishing the farm isn't going to happen overnight. they are going in the right direction and have drafted well this year, and over the next few years, they'll continue that pattern and the crops will flourish again.

And I don't think Stevens gets fired if they miss, depending on how they play. He has the tools he inherited, and firing him wouldn't be the answer. Team has to look in the mirror if it fails this year. I don't think either Blake or luc is that shortsighted.

But it all depends on that first 7 weeks, that run to Thanksgiving. Usually a new coach/system creates an adjustment period of about 2 months. Now most of the Kings know Stevens, so that helps, but some of the kids don't and it's still them adjusting to the NHL.

They wouldn't of brought Stevens in if they were going to fire him after one season. I think he'll get two years to get the team back in the playoffs, if not then he'll get the can

Love those remarks by Kopitar. One of the highest paid players in the league and scored 12 goals last season. Nothing needs to be changed!

Well we already know the regimen under Sutter was demanding, he's gone. DL was also adamant about off-season regimen and training. He's gone.

Luc and Blake hire the good guy in Stevens, who's less demanding. K17 also pretty much said it, Luc apparently stepped in to get the Kopitar signing done at whatever cost. I know for a fact DL wouldn't give Kopitar that contract. Once he got the contract he wanted...well his play speaks for itself.

Just like he did with the Gaborik and Brown contracts right?

Wasn't it Kopitar down the stretch who said something along the lines of, "If everyone's good no one needs to be great?" I think that says it all right there.

If I have an employee working for me that was dragging their feet right after getting a raise and said that when called out, I'd fire them.

I really don't know what to think about Kopitar anymore, his quotes since becoming captain have been less than inspiring to say the least, and I think it's pretty clear that he and the rest of the team quit on Sutter down the stretch last year.

On the other hand he was playing hurt for most of the season and I don't believe the idea that he simply quit on the team after getting his retirement contract, I do think he tuned out Sutter though. But yeah those quotes about not changing his game are worrysome. Even if Blake and Luc decide to shop Kopitar I doubt anyone takes him at this point

I'm saying on paper they're a playoff team, if they suck this year Again, you fire Stevens and immediately trade Kopitar.

Wait, Kopitar said he doesn't need to tweak his game??? What the ****? He can't be that stupid but it wouldn't surprise. Is there a link?

I suspect Kopitar means that if he plays "his" game, doesn't hit 275 posts and doesn't play half the year hurt he can be the 25ish goal 70ish point center he has been in the past, and that's what he means by not needing to change. I don't necessarily agree, but that's where he's coming from I'm sure. Would rather he say "I need to be better", but he doesn't really do that.

Still think it was a mistake stripping Brown of the C.

I can 2nd that Kopitar did say that , it was during a post game interview . I doubt it will be easy to find the link but that was said

That's bizarre, he absolutely needs to tweak his game, and be more offensive.

They never should have made him captain

I'm pretty sure that quote was said well before he became Captain like back even before the cup runs. Not that I'm saying that absolves him now because he certainly did not live up to that monster deal. One thing that I've noticed is that the team comes and goes as Kopitar. If Kopitar is playing well, then the team plays well. But like in the 2015 and 17 season when he was awful, the team was also awful. That simply cannot happen again.

Actually he said that this year during a post game interview lol. I was livid about it too . He said if everyone plays good no one needs to be great. He doesn't think that he should be the star of this team. I wish they made Doughty captain.

He's 10th in NHL scoring over the last decade behind mostly generational players while being on a bottom offensive team. Led the playoffs in scoring twice, perennial Selke winner...

...we are ****ing spoiled. let's not forget the player he can be and that didn't magically change because he said something innocuous that can be easily twisted and misinterpreted.

Yes, let's deliberately ignore all the times he's directly said "i need to be better" and focus on out of context quotes.

There are plenty of well-documented reasons to be upset with Kopitar over last year. No need to misremember quotes and their contexts to artificially generate outrage.
