Assuming price has gone done and even with injury worries. He is exactly what they are missing.

Seems to me they have too many players and still too few spots. Some of these guys need to move on before their values deprecate more or are lost for nothing. Kings have to be able to put a decent package together that can beat out other interested parties. Seems like now is the time to go after that piece.

My two cents anyway.

Possibly. I'd take that package and try to get Hague out of Vegas, he's a better player and fits what we need even more. Vegas could absolutely use cheap, young talent.

Finding a young goalie is way more important than trading a lot of assets for a banged defenseman. Losing Quick to an injury, even with Chychrun, could make LA a lottery team. Plus, Quick is in his last year of his contract.

I'm still not buying it.

Great player with risks that aren't quite worth the ask and would firmly be the 'all in' chip when this team has holes still. Maybe the deadline will paint a better picture as we'll see what his health is like vs. our holes as well, but right now, I think better value would be guys like Hague/Soucy/Sanheim.

What package are we talking about here? Turcotte, Durzi, Walker, and a 1st?

Anderson - Doughty
Chychrun - Clarke
Bjornfot - Roy
Edler - Spence

Is some combination of these eight players a cup-winning defense in the next three years?

On one hand, I want to say Anderson - Doughty / Chychrun - Roy / Edler - Clarke is Cup caliber on paper; not THE best in the league but has a little bit of everything. On the other, it's STILL too many question marks for my liking.

Sorry still a big “shouldn’t” for me. LD is a bit of a concern for sure but I’d prefer Blake to package for somebody like Hague or Sanheim or even Dillon from Winnipeg (who might have need for a RD).

That is such an odd collection of defensemen, none of them are really related in playstyle/contract/veteran status.

Dillon is 32, has a career .21 ppg and has a 4 million cap hit.
Hague is 23, has a .3 career PPG and is just coming off his ELC in need of a new contract.
Sanheim is 26, has a career PPG of .35 and is on the last year of a 4.675 cap hit.

Not even sure what the theme is other than them all being blue liner.

The Kings severely lack offense from the blue line. Anderson, Bjornfot, Durzi, Edler, Roy and Spence combined to score 12 goals in 323 games last season. At .03 GPG, those 6 were scoring at the same rate as noted blueline scorers like Jordie Benn, Andy Greene, Ian Cole, Vlasic, Gudas, MacDermid, Marc Stall and McNabb did last season. Cychrun has a career .16 GPG and had a .15 last year, good for 21st among blue liners.

I think his ability to score goals from the point would be very valuable and would also help open things up for the forwards in the offensive zone as he would demand more coverage. With 3 years remaining on his value contract, I think he would ve a massive upgrade that the Kings can afford to go after.

I’d say:
JAD
Turcotte
Kupari
Walker
Grans
Fagemo
Thomas

Would and should be available. Weather they are what Arizona wants is the question I guess.

All are decent players that may not see much time in LA. You don’t lose all of them but if the bulk likely have no fit, why not make the offer?

I like the other mentioned dmen too but I still think Chychrun is underrated now. Injury concerns are legit tho.

Dillon would be a stopgap, but the other two are better than Chychrun overall, just exceptional in all areas and around the same age. And they are far more durable.

Yes, I think that is a defense that could win a championship in the next 1-4 years. But you would need Byfield and Kaliyev to be pretty good probably starting this season or next. The biggest concern would then shift to goaltending.

The 1st is probably the most valuable asset going the other way. But again you are talking about a 17 year old asset (likely taken in the back half of the 1st) for a team thats Top 11 players (Top 6, Top 4, Starting G) are

Kopitar - 35
Doughty - 33
Fiala - 26
Kempe - 26
Danault - 29
Moore - 27
Arviddson - 29
Durzi - 23
Roy - 27
Anderson - 27
Quick - 36

Average Age: 29 years old

Even if they make a good pick, with the way the team handles young players the earliest you are likely looking at that pick is in his age 21 season. By that time the majority of these players will be either retired or on the wrong side of 30. Yes that does hurt the Byfield, Clarke group but we have already committed to trying to win in the next 3 years with the Kopi/Doughty group combined with the prime player acquisitions made over the last two summers. That was shown when they traded a 1st this year and a high-end prospect for Fiala.

Durzi is the 2nd most valuable asset, and it sucks to give up on a younger player who actually showed through last season, but he is just caught in a numbers game with the RHD.

Turcotte gives Phoenix a younger player with some respectable upside should he be able to actually play. But he's still not even a lock to return, and even when he does he is pretty buried on LA's depth chart.

Offense is more than just goals. Durzi had more points last year than Chychrun has had in any season other than the weird 2021 season. Since a goal is worth as much as an assist, trading for Chychrun is likely just changing who scores for LA and does not increase goals scored by the team.

I have never understood the confidence with which people talk about the "need" for scoring from the blueline.

Why exactly do I care where the goals come from?

Has there been any conclusive evidence to suggest that teams with higher "G from D" perform better?

Or is it another thing someone said then got repeated so frequently that it just became part of the conversation?

Chychrun played in 166 games the last 3 seasons logging 2997 minutes, while Hague played 142 games and logged 2173 minutes. Chychrun had a +2.26 CF% Rel, a +2.83 GF% Rel, and a +3.05 xGF% Rel. Hague had a +1.37 GF% Rel, a -2.47 GF% Rel and a 0.92 xGF% Rel. Chyhchrun had an ozone start% of 48.35, while Hague had a 61.09. Chychrun had 24 goals and 57 ES points and a 45.60 IPP, while Hague had 9 goals and 37 points and a 33.64 IPP. I'm not sure where the argument is that Hague is better than Chychrun.

Sanheim(who I like a lot) is a good comparable for Chychrun as they are fairly close among all stats, but the big difference for me is goal scoring and overall offense. If the advanced stats are similar, I would lean towards the game who is capable of providing some much needed offense. Also, Sanheim is a UFA who is on a contract that is already bigger than Chychrun's. So you would either be acquiring him as a rental or would be giving him a fairly significant raise. Is Sanheim at an 8 million cap hit better than Chychrun with a 4.6 million cap hit?

The Kings aren’t 1 big piece away from winning a cup. Chycrun is a 3, maybe 4, for one trade. Blake isn’t subtracting a bunch of everyday players, or guys on the cusp, for what amounts to elite depth. It would shine a spotlight on all the wrong areas.

Well, considering that Durzi is the same age as Chyhchrun, throwing out a season is significant when comparing the two. How do we know that last season was an outlier for Durzi?

I personally think that it helps isolate offensive impact from a defenseman to some degree. I also think the ability to score from the blue line forces the opposition to challenge the point more aggressively, which can open up lanes. I suppose you don't need it, but I don't think you can dismiss it's value.

While not necessary to win it sure doesn’t hurt. Loved your interview with Han by the way. Great insight into a dman’s shift.

That’s the crux of the argument. The piniellis/Helenius/Chromiaks/Lafreirres are on the way now too. Losing these pieces to add a solid top dman isn’t that much of a loss. The ammo is there to use.

None of those guys are even Grundstrom level throw ins as of today, and the Muzzin trade is a close comparable to Chycrun. Who in that group breaks out before being 24 years old? Zero IMO. Chromiak probably has the highest possible upside as a forward.

What 3 other assets would you extract for a guy who will play less minutes than Mikey Anderson?

Basic idea is to add to the LD. I know you have a hardon for Chycrun but I don’t believe we have to give up all that for some help on the left side. Dillon maybe a stopgap but he addresses the lack of size on the backend. Career plus player too. Same thing with Hague. Sanheim is more of the offensive type LD. All 3 may well be had for far less than Chycrun and his brittle health.

Confused, these guys aren’t trade inclusions they are next wave.

Ask Coyotes fans if they’d trade Anderson for him straight up. Yes Mikey is a good partner but Chychrun likely only pairs with Doughty on the pp anyway.

IS Chychrun even healthy and playing right now? correct me if i'm wrong, but the guy hasn't touched the ice in a game yet this preseason.
