Yeah right. For Phil it's asswipe money.
True, but rich guys don't make the same mistake twice.
It's not that Uncle Phil can't afford it, it's does it make sense with the salary cap.
Do we need two players with $10M cap hits?
Personally, if it was between Doughty and Kopitar, Doughty would be the one I would pay and keep. I can see Doughty commanding 7 years and $75M on the open market.
It's going to be pretty enticing for Doughty to leave for Toronto. His contract is up after the 2018-19 season. So, the Kings can get him signed sometime during the 2017-18 season. There will be a lot of pressure on the GM at the time to either get Doughty signed or trade him. Doughty is too valuable a commodity to let walk as a UFA.
Also note, this CBA is a 10-year agreement, but both parties can choose to opt out after 8 years. The NHL will have first crack to do so by Sept. 1, 2019. If they decline, the NHLPA can decide to opt out by Sept. 19, 2019. The 10-year deal expires Sept. 15, 2022.
I can't imagine the owners not opting out, but stranger things have happened. Any contract Doughty signs might be affected by the CBA negotiations, or grandfathered into the new CBA.
