Guys like Roy, Lintu, and McD aren't even NHL caliber defensemen. Neither is Brickley at this point. Clague is exactly the guy I was referring to. He is the only one who has top 4 potential and he is at least 1 1/2 years away from regular NHL duty.
Yeah, Brickley was a lottery ticket. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. On to the next undrafted free agent college defenseman next summer.
Here's to hoping he is one of these guys that it just clicks for at the NHL level v. the AHL. Thought he looked good in his one game last year and in pre-season.
If he does flame out, let this be a reminder that Blake was being lauded for keeping Lombardi's NHL roster intact and for signing prospects. While it is smart to move on "free" assets, there has been too much cart-before-the-horse going on with Blake's draft picks and UDFA signings. Need to see that these prospects actually pan out before talking about how amazing Blake has been.
Just go to Hockey-Reference and look up the list of Kings draft picks since Taylor was GM. I'm sure I've read numerous future lineups with several of the names on that list that wound up never amounting to anything: including 1st and 2nd rounders. I read future lineups on here that basically have every Blake UDFA signing and Rd 1-3 pick and feel like I'm in a time machine back when Lehoux was going to be a 1C and Joe Ryan would be a #4 with snarl.
And we're supposed to be excited about a rebuild.
Any rebuild the Kings do, even if successful, is more likely to result in just making the playoffs consistently, than it is to end in yet another historical run to win the Cup.
This core is like a great television show that has stayed on the air for too many seasons that you don't even want to watch anymore.
We want a new show to watch. Will be hard pressed to match the prior shows prime but that is irrelevant to what the old show is at present.
Well, we already know what the result will be if Blake stands pat with this core. And we're supposed to be excited about a rebuild.

Those giveaway/takeaway stats are pretty worthless given how they vary from stadium to stadium. That said, the Kings are pretty awful in puck control, and one of the giveaways that likely Doughty was given yesterday for example could be credited to Kempe for putting his defenseman in a bad spot.

Blake's excuse for why our season went poorly. :/
Ouch!
Los Angeles Kings![]()
‘Tis the season for giving and Drew Doughty leads the NHL in giveaways with 56 compared to only seven takeaways. Fellow Kings blue-liners Alec Martinez and Jake Muzzin are also top 10 in giveaways.
And to think these are the best 3 King D ???
Giveaways and Takeaways aren't official stats because its up to the arena's scorekeeper to decide what constitute as either. So if you look at home/away splits you'll see that Doughty has a Giveaway/Takeaway of 39/2 at Staples Center compared to 13/5 everywhere else. The Kings defense combined is 117/9 at home, 62/22 away. Obviously, they're in last place and the numbers are going to look bad, but the discrepancy between the splits suggests that the statistician at Staples records giveaways at a much higher rate and takeaways at a much lower late than officials at other arenas.
Tomorrow’s game against the Jackets should be interesting. The Kings match up poorly even when they’re playing well, so the current roster has to be an underdog.
Hopefully DD is back and we see more kids and minutes given to them. I’d support a 1 year extension for Willie D if he rolled the following 4 lines tomorrow night.
Iafallo Kempe Luff
Wagner Amadio Scherbak
Leipsec Kopitar Brown
Carter Thompson Toffoli
I'm sure I'm not the only one that went, WTF
Only owed $7M in cash over the remaining 3 years, hopefully others see the value between now and February.
i've been beating that drum for a while, for several years he's been one of the best value players in the league and everyone here was screaming to trade him
it's kinda flipped a bit with his injury and major league suck this year but hey
