They're going to hire whoever prioritizes the same playing characteristics and skillsets that ralph values.

It seems like Meghan Chayka really wants a job.
She owns her own company.
Stathletes co-founder Meghan Chayka is on the road to a higher calling - TheHockeyNews.
“I don’t want to be the GM,” said Meghan Chayka with a laugh. “I want to own the team. I want to be my boss. I want to build a billion-dollar company and own the team.”
Hopefully she'll hit a billion when the Pegulas want out.

Jeremiah Crowe promoted to director of scouting.

Crowe is a local guy from Kenmore.

"Jeremiah is an experienced evaluator and recruiter," said Scott Monaghan, senior director of hockey operations for the NTDP. "We look forward to his efforts in continuing to build the U.S. talent pool."

Crowe spent the 2015-16 season as assistant director of player personnel for the NTDP, where his main responsibilities included identification, evaluation and recruitment of potential players. In his new role, he will be responsible for the scouting, planning and implementation of the NTDP Tryout Camp used to determine rosters for upcoming NTDP teams.

Prior to the NTDP, Crowe was a coach at the Academy of Hockey at HARBORCENTER in Buffalo. There, he helped implement training and development curriculums for all positions and skill levels, as well as lead coaching education programs to accelerate youth player development.

Crowe, who previously scouted for the United States Hockey League's Dubuque Fighting Saints, spent three seasons (2011-14) as an assistant coach for the Buffalo State College men's ice hockey program. He also completed a professional scouting internship with the National Hockey League's Buffalo Sabres in 2008.

Jeremiah Crowe Named NTDP Director of Player Personnel - Clarkson University Athletics

"One of the most important factors at the NTDP is that we don't make mistakes and we have a class that's well-rounded that pushes from the bottom to the middle, and from the middle to the top," said John Wroblewski, who coached the 2001 birth-year players at the NTDP. "Jeremiah Crowe [then player personnel director and now a pro scout with the Buffalo Sabres] did a fantastic job putting this team together."
Wroblewski noted that the most skilled players would be challenged by the ones who were more defensively sound, and vice versa. And the team also includes two exceptional goalies.

Welcome to a golden age of American hockey talent

Jason Nightingale, director of analytics, will add the title of assistant director of scouting.

Background on Nightingdale:

He played forward for Lake Superior State University from 1998 to 2002. The mechanical engineering graduate moved on to Notre Dame and earned a master’s of science in aerospace and mechanical engineering in 2007. Then he really got serious with his schoolwork, completing a joint doctorate in engineering and mathematics last year while serving as a volunteer assistant with the Fighting Irish.

“I have a programming background, so the numbers side I’ll write my programs to analyze things, and then I like to go back to watch to see if the two align.”

I like it. More needs to be done.

Here's hoping they have a plan of the type of team/player they are looking to focus on.

Soooo... we aren't going to have a distinction between director of pro scouting & director of amateur scouting? Great...

Ehh I dont think thats a big deal as long as the staff is big enough to cover everything

Kind of worried they are putting too much on Nightengale, the article says they arent sure if they are adding more analytics people.

The guy has a double Ph.D, not sure if he will ever experience that kind of workload ever in his life.

With analytics, its more about adding technology than it is adding bodies. I would be interested to see his budget for outside consultants. They need to build programs (he has programming experience, but experts in programming are incredible) so it would be wise to contract that work out because once it is built, it usually just requires feeds of data.

I'm not worried. As with any work endeavor, I'm sure he's being allowed to define the scope and approach to the job, identify what he can/will and can't/won't be able to do, make sure they understand the gaps, if any, and provide options to close / address gaps (cost, people, approaches - i.e., partnerships, etc.), and then let GM WHY? and the Pegulas decide if they are satisfied with the scope as-is.

Unless there are obvious gaps, like a plan to build a house without a roof, most organizations would let it unfold as planned, then assess periodically to determine if/how/when gaps need to be filled.

Years ago (maybe the 1990s, circa 28-team league) there were 2-3 NFL scouting services available teams would subscribe to. About 20 teams subscribed to one service, the Bills subscribed to the less-popular service, and I'm pretty sure Al Davis' Raiders (and maybe one more team) did their own thing. There was no right and wrong, just different.

With the Sabres, I just want them to do something different, because what they were doing wasn't working. That might be approach, it might be data, it might be compilation / assimilation of data into information (there is a difference), it could be analysis, it could be decisions, it could be timeliness of decisions, etc. With the Sabres, I suspect it was multiple factors.

These seem like really smart moves in line with the vision the Pegulas have for their staff (based on the past few weeks of comments). Time will tell.

Didn't even know a joint PhD was a thing. One STEM PhD is a real accomplishment, two is very impressive.

Looks like Adams is going to be hiring lots of people with WNY hockey and Harbor Center Academy of Hockey connections.

Oh yeah. When I was doing my post-doc research, my advisor was a PhD/MD.

As far as the news goes -- I'm of two minds here. I really like that an analytics guy is going to have a bigger voice it seems.

Of course then, we did promote one of our pro scouts. And we all know how good our pro scouting has been.........

I wonder if this closes the door for any possibility of Dudley coming on board??? Based on what he's done in Carolina he'd be a perfect fit for the direction we "seem" to be going.

If they don't add at least one person with experience to support, things could still get worse. That's a lot of inexperience in key roles....

Ugh. I don’t know Crowe but seeing NDTP mentioned so many times doesn’t give me hope. They have ignored Canadian Junior for a long time and this better not mean they are continuing to do so. Crowe has been apart of their poor scouting for the past few years.

Does this mean they are not hiring anyone from the outside and just re arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic? Kevin Devine as AGM.

Brackett or Futa would have given me hope that they are focused on getting better, this just reeks of how can we save money.

Failed organizations that just promote from within don’t get better.

They'll be looking for authenticity when they interview prospects.
If a prospect says they don't want to come to Buffalo because the organization is a train wreck, sign him up!!!!

I've known a couple in my education / career.

The driving factor for Crowe is that he appears to be a believer in analytics. It sure seems more and more like they are moving in a positive direction, IMO, but I’ll reserve my optimism until AFTER they deal Risto. If anything, I’ll have more faith in the organization of the return for Risto is perceived as under value. That’ll tell me that they know Risto is a below replacement level player. Until that happens, it’s all talk.
