Basically he's being sheltered to an extent to maximize his skill set which is PP, joining the rush and offensive zone play
He is being sheltered because his defensive play is poor, which does not bode well for when playing against the other teams top players.

Shattenkirk is this year's NYR all-star representative.

This is his 2nd all star selection.
That is insane. That shows me the last 2 seasons its just been a numbers game so they took defensemen instead of forwards. I like Shatty but is he has not even been one of our top 2 dmen in the last month.

Honestly he's even overrated as a pure puck mover IMO. That term is a bit of a misnomer as well.

"Puck moving defenseman" is a synonym for 'offensive defenseman'/guys who put up points.

Shattenkirk isn't very good at facilitating breakouts under heavy forcheck pressure.

Stalman was much better at making subtle plays and passes on the breakout.

He's a huge asset on the PP and in the ozone though.

I don't think that's an unfair assessment. He's been average in all the data I have seen in clean zone exits, but when he gets the puck in the offensive zone is when he is at his best. Which sucks because the Rangers aren't that sort of team.

Boy, this guy has been terrible for the last month or so. I couldn't imagine this being a debate point 3 months ago, but the question of if hes been a an upgrade to Girardi at even strength is a legitimate one.

Shattenkirk and Nash, in particular, are supposed to be this teams' game breakers and they've been anything but.

yeah they both need to step up several levels and deliver what those players are good at in this league, but Nash was good last game and hopefully he continue to produce for us.

Regarding Nash: At this point "good" means scoring as far as I'm concerned. Shattenkirk has to go out there and do what he does best--move the damn puck.

Shattenkirk is quickly turning into a train wreck. Virtually no production for like 6+ weeks now and hasn't been good defensively. The only positives of his deal right now is that its only 4 years and there is no NTC.

He showed that poor trend last year with Caps in the playoffs like a red warning sign - I was sceptical to this deal before he signed with us.
I thought the All Star game selection was mainly based on fans voting, but maybe I am wrong?
It can`t be organized selection within the NHL organization based on each team player performance? :)

Shattenkirk has not taken enough abuse for his poor play because he grew up a Rangers fan in Westchester County and 90% of the people here wanted him.

The guy has not scored a goal since November 6. Nick Holden and Brendan Smith are the last two Rangers D to score a goal. Trucker has nothing. Skjei has 2. He only scores against the Habs.

It`s understandable that fans voted on him since he is from New York - US states are like small countries, what the govner in New York is doing concerning taxes, could be very different in Florida for instant related to taxes and that is just politics. But US continent is huge which is my point, and that Kevin has a large loyal fan base in New York make sense.

But it has been an issue this year it could be part of the system, but also some blame on the players who can`t finish plays from our blueline. In fact we have 12 total goals this year from our entire D core and not all of those are shots from our blueline, and with players like Kevin it`s way too low numbers, but Ryan Mc. has 0 goals this season, but I expect better production overall from our blueline.

Why should Shattenkirk get the abuse? The Rangers knew, or should have known exactly what he was when they signed him.

The problem is no longer Shattenkirk. Is it a coincidence that when the offense dried up, Shattenkirk stopped putting up points?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the lowest offensive output we've had from our d under AV?

Its almost like some aliens saw him playing really well in November and came down to zap his skills away. He has looked much different the last 4-5 weeks.

Maybe it`s too much pressure for some players to play here, and he is not the first player who struggle to perform here in MSG, @NickyFotiu
That used to be a really big deal for NY FA in all sports so you may be on the right track. I'm not thinking Shatty is Brian Leetch by any means but he is definitely way better than what he has showed in the last 4 weeks or so.

Yes, I hope he find his game - the whole team need to come out and compete - otherwise we are in the lottery for Dahlin, and not many who predicted that beginning of this season among the NHL experts.

I don't think any of our defensemen are the problem. It's the coach. Girardi is having a pretty good season down in Tampa.
Out of all the defensive guys we've had, the one consistency through the struggles is AV. As long as AV is HC, our defense will be awful, and any defensive player thrown in this system will perform sub par.

The NY Post has a really good article about Shattenkirk and AV. I suggest everyone check it out.

He's being given every possible opportunity to succeed right now. He had a sit down with AV where AV told him to be more aggressive and stop playing safe. His o-zone faceoff percentage is higher than it's ever been. He's getting sheltered to an extreme degree.
