Player Discussion Kevin Shattenkirk

Can’t wait to see Shattenkirk (fully healthy) under a coach not named AV.

Same for all our other defenseman. Hell, maybe even Staal could turn back the clock a bit (I know, I’m reaching a bit there).

Considering the injury/season he had last year, I'll go ahead and put him on the watch list instead of being flippant about it.
Its a problem if any player gets injured, of course. By this logic Kreider, Zibanejad, ADA, Lundqvist, and Hayes should all be on the "watch list" considering they all had injuries last year.

Shatty's contract isn't that long, he has been good for us, and he is not that old. anything past that is speculation and not worth worrying about until we have to. especially if we are not expecting to compete next year.

so yeah I'm flippant about it because there is no sense in worry about injuries before they happen.

I don't even think it's that big of a reach. Guys like Staal and O'Gara I think could be useful players in a system that doesn't ask the defensemen to play so much man coverage.

Advanced stats are what they are, you can ignore them or use them for what they’re worth. Stats state Shatty leads to fewer shot attempts on his own goalie. Sample size is pretty good for Shatty so it’s not noise or randomness. So that begs the question, how can these stats be true if he’s mostly ‘average’ in the D zone with small size to boot?!? Maybe because he’s heady and knows how to break up a play before it starts, limiting his weaknesses? Or perhaps he’s so good at offense that opposing teams have trouble leaving their zone when he’s on the ice?

You can hypothesize a number of reasons which may or may not be the cause, but the underlying statistics remain whether they ‘make sense’ to you or not. Or you can just take the .1% chance it’s an anomaly/lucky.

I mean the reality is this: last year, Shattenkirk graded out pretty poorly across the board, generally way worse than his career norms. This could be caused by a few things:

1) Everything prior to last season was an aberration and he actually sucks
2) He suddenly declined significantly at 28
3) His coach was a shithead who doesn't know how to run a defensive system
4) His f***ing knee was torn up all year, limiting his play
5) Something else

I'm going with 3 and 4.

I’ll go with 6) Grotans is asleep at the wheel

Not sure I'd consider it good to be on for 11 more goals against than on for 5on5 total

or be on for 15 more against than on for when score is tied

The only score situation he scored more for than against was when the Rangers were trailing

Player Season Totals - Natural Stat Trick
Any particular reason you're using the season he had one leg as opposed to the several before that?

Or perhaps this is another case where the "advanced" stats come up with some sort of statistics that does not really tell a true tale.

I certainly hope that he is better defensively than I think. But fear that he is a gifted offensive defense man who is pretty poor when it comes to actually defending. Again, having your minutes be sheltered is usually not a sign of steady defensive play.

Because he was on the Rangers last year, and it was his first season without at least one RD getting far more 5on5 minutes in front of him.

So you think the minutes caused the problems and not the joint in his knee tearing.

That's interesting.

Once again, I love learning that shots and goals are "advanced."

I'm sure the injury played a part, how much one attributes to his injury, that did not seem to effect him as much earlier on in the year through 25 or so games, versus how much of it was he no longer had a RD playing more minutes, to each there own. If the Rangers do play him more minutes next season, and he is healthy, I think it will be interesting to look upon that to see what his on ice 5on5 goals for / goals against ratio does, especially when filtered by score. I have a feeling we may not be able to end up in that scenario however, as I think whoever the next coach is will too find someone to put out there for more RD 5on5 minutes.

I was at the Div. 1A World Championships in Budapest. Italy vs Slovenia was 3-3 with a minute to go and both teams had 6 points. Both teams needing a win in regulation (3 points) with Kazakhstan and Great Britain already on 9 points, since an OT win is only 2 points.

The result was that both teams pulled their goalie with a minute to go. Slovenia first, when they had possession, they lost the puck, Italy circled back, pulled their goalie and Italy won the game with an empty net goal with seconds to go.

If Shatty plays like he did at the start of the season we'll surprise few people next season. At times we looked deadly especially on PP.

Why are people complaining about shatty? Dude played on one leg last season and when he didn't (the beginning of the season) he looked really go0d.

Shattenkirk..The Defensive stalwart because of the stats yet he can't even kill penalties.
Thanks for the LOL before bed..SMH

Well, this contract looks pretty awful now. Shattenkirk isn't that good in the defensive zone and his expensive contract ends the next eternity. You don't want Shattenkirk as one of your main pieces on the blueline in a rebuild.

Funny how quiet you got after your hypocritical garbage was called out.
