Multiple people spoke about his age...

I'm hear to say don't buy contract year production.
What Zibanejad is doing(producing after he got a cheaper deal) is more ideal..
This is what is alarming. If indeed he was really this good/productive, why didnt he do this last year? Not enough pucks? Nash, Grabs took away from him "leading"? Begs the question.......why oh why all of a sudden? Coincidence?
Just makes too much sense to trade him. Not just for picks.....that "prospect" had better be good and near ready for nhl duties.

What changed from last year?

Guys can put it together at different rates and times. Hayes was showing signs last year, same as Kreider in the years prior.

Working harder on his FA year is def a worry/factor, but I think it’s more likely he’s gotten more comfortable understanding his strengths and how to play to them better and minimize his weaknesses. Bigger guys also need time to improve their balance and coordination, and learning league tendencies and making adjustments takes time as well.

It's obviously been easier to score this season than anytime in recent years. Perfect time for Hayes to be on pace for 70+. There's the potential for the most 100 pt scorers since 1995-96 and the most individual points since Mario's 161 in 95-96.

Here is what has changed:
  • Consistently higher quality of teammates compared to previous years
  • Put into more of an offensive role instead of being a shutdown center like AV had him for the last two-ish years
  • More TOI, especially on the PP. He has roughly matched last years PPTOI already and is almost at previous years' PPTOI as well...in half the games.
Pretty much...Hayes is just getting more opportunities offensively than he has in the past, and in what should be no surprise to anyone, he's producing.

Yes, getting more comfortable and learning how to play better is a part of it, but IMO the biggest aspect of "what changed" is just that he's playing more, really.

I really don't think the "working harder on his FA year" is much of a factor here/more important than the points I mentioned.

Good post. Guy has been developing continually since he entered the league, not sure why it has to be a contract year thing since he achieved and surpassed every goal this team put in front of him.

It doesnt have to be a contract year thing...

The point of saying its his contract year is to put it in context. Don't pay thinking this year is the new norm.

I dont want to pay him a ton then have him regress. His value is at an all time high. It looks like its time to sell

Doing segments for Barstool Sports does not exactly scream "will do well with guaranteed millions."

Oh stop. Almost every single big name player has appeared on their show. Matthews. Marner. Keith Ktachuk, Brady, Matthew. MAF. Seguin. Hall. Posts like yours are why the NHL will always lag behind other professional sports in popularity. Everybody has a conniption the second somebody shows any type of personality.

Enjoyed that. Thanks for posting. Have they had any more segments with other Rangers?

Lots of Rangers have been on the podcast. I really recommend everyone listen to the episode with Hayes and Yandle. It's one of the best ones they've ever done IMO. Yandle is absolutely hilarious and I was floored by how funny he is because it's not something I would have expected from seeing him do interviews when he was with the Rangers. The story they tell about Johnny Gaudreau getting his real nickname, "Johnny Ham and Cheese", is amazing.

Said for months Hayes needs to be resigned. He's clearly a better center than Zibanejad who is ridiculously inconsistent.

Hayes the type of guy that can't ramp it up in playoffs or when the heat gets turned up . Look at last night against BJ's...they turned it up a notch in the 3rd and Hayes got mesmerized or over whelmed and cost us a game . He is an OK regular season type guy ....but not one about to lead you further . It's DNA...you cannot change it . Hayes is what he is and likely will peak this season . Move him for what you can if it improves our roster down the road .
