I'm more than fine with the status quo. Better than making some "broche a foins" signings which usually don't amount to anything. No panic moves either. Just puts us in a better position to acquire a game changer in next year's draft.

I know but why would a season-ticket holder show up to see a losing team ice a sub-NHL lineup? There is a fine line between trying and not being good enough and icing a crappy team and charging full price.

The Habs make a lot of money off their fans and paying supporters. It's worth keeping in mind that even losing teams like Ottawa and Buffalo would always try to ice a competent lineup.

Everybody says Chicago went overboard with their tank-style moves but not signing a veteran defender (so far) is as much of a tank-style move as I've ever seen. They're going to throw Harris and Barron and Guhle to the wolves? Is that even smart to do?
Thats horse shit and you know it LOL

Once they move Petry they'll likely get someone back in the trade or sign a veteran. There's still Savard and Edmundson as well. Wideman is a veteran as well. So you're looking at 4, with two rookies playing and schueneman spelling them.
Ah forgot about the Wideman.

I guess they'll go with Eddy - Petry // [XX] - Savard // [XX] - Wideman ex. Schuenmann

XX being Barron, Harris, or Xheraj? Guhle needs to play a full AHL season imo.

It's disrespectful to paying fans that the Habs didn't even try to look like they made the team better. They added Dadanov and Slafkovsky but the defence is not NHL-worthy -- who replaces Romanov??

Even crap teams sign players every summer to tighten their bottom6 or bottom-pair. This inaction is unfortunate. I understand the cap is problematic but I'm just viewing it with a step away from the nitty gritty details: they made zero effort to improve the NHL roster. That's strange to me. This is as much of a Full Rebuild as I've ever seen.

It seems someone spat in your coffee today.

HuGo are taking the long view, not thinking short term. We have many prospects to "replace" Romanov. Anyone who says "who replaces x player", has never built a team. People aren't replaceable, but you make do with what you have and get the job done. Can the Flames just replace Johnny Gaudreau? Not likely.

I love the part about, don't bother me with details, like the cap, good stuff.

Bergevin wanted "karacter", a big, tough team. HuGo want a fast, puck-moving team, Romanov was not much of a puck mover, but had value and got us Dach. We will see how that turns out.

For years I have been reading on the board how MB didn't solve our Centre problem, HuGo do it in one year, and you read, "not good enough!". Good times.

Inhale . . . exhale. . . inhale . . . exhale.

I'd expect Barron and Harris to be the ones playing in the NHL. But I also think we'll see a bit of a rotation, don't be surprised if Guhle and Norlinder get some NHL time next year, sending Barron or Harris down if they struggle at all.

I firmly believe it is important to ice an NHL-worthy lineup. You can disagree with me on that but it doesn't mean I'm full of shit. I would see Ottawa and Buffalo and Arizona sign all manners of veteran players just to ice a decent enough lineup. I'm surprised the Habs have this many holes at this stage with so little cap space -- is all.

Others teams have found ways to move bad contracts to lighten the cap load. Interested to hear why no movement here other then easily tradeable contracts.

A top 8 pick next year is all I'm hoping for and its a completely realistic outcome.

The only way its not is if Suzuki, Caufield, Slafkovsky and Dach make monumental leaps and we get vintage Price goaltending.
Even if the forwards take leaps, the defense is absolutely putrid. NJ had a 100pt player in Hughes last year and still finished bottom 5.

Only the second coming of Jesus Price could pull us out of that.

I'm just making conversation, not sure why you have to call me cranky for it. Perfectly calm.

I don't think signing a busted wrist bust (so far in his career) like Kirby Dach solves anything. Let's see him play and produce and perform before declaring victory okay. Is that fair?

As for replacing -- yes we need players to eat minutes. I don't think it's safe or smart to throw young defenders out to get destroyed and scored on recklessly, I feel it might have negative repercussions and impact on their development.

Yeah I don't believe a word you post dude. All those teams you mentioned traded away ALL there talent to get a top pick especially Buffalo when Mcdavid was to be drafted. Hell Arizona is doing that very thing you are giving us shit for. Look at the Coyotes line up and try and tell us they aren't gunning for a top 5 pick again this season.

Get off your high horse dude. The Habs are doing what every contending team went through to have a crack at the cup for a short while which is tank and gather top 5 picks trying to get super stars.

And if he played and produced at Chicago this year, chances of getting him for 13thoa and romanov is less than 0%..
In other words, it's a calculated risk that is worth it.

I would safely say Canadiens end up bottom 4
And If things go wrong like injuries under performing - Gallagher being s hit again with some others - probably bottom 2
I don't think Arizona will be quite as bad as some think
Right now ; we're in a tight race with Chicago......
But for the first time in my life, I'm ok with that. Chances of getting a generational player next year are genuine.
Season is gonna be brutal, we'll have to remind ourselves on the prize. Let's enjoy St-Louis giving kids responsabilities.

people are always in such a rush to fit the direction taken into a narrative box... tank... re-build... re-tool...

thus far, what we have seen from HuGo is:
- strong communication
- clarity of direction re. culture and roster building
- patience and decisiveness in approach to trades

all of that points to strong leadership with a clear vision... something we haven't seen in this org. since Gainey (whom, while i didn't agree with many of the decisions-made, the approach was sound)

the summer is far from over, there will likely be additional moves made both to address the cap situation and to address the defense group.

At this point, hard not to be very encouraged and optimistic about their approach. How good the roster is on opening day vs how good it needs to be to A- make the playoffs B- contend for a cup, will be a gap bridged much more quickly and effectively thanks to the strong approach.

we've added a ton of skilled prospects and young players up front
added skill on the back end
and haven't added any bad contracts (Dadonov is a net positive considering UFA status and shedding Weber)

why anyone would complain at this stage is.... well, i suppose it's par for the course around here lol
