And yet people universally pilloried Chayka……

Dubas made his share of HockeyGuy moves too, which people demanded. The analytics boogeyman doesn’t even make sense. He built top 5 teams that could’ve won. He got a lot of bang for his buck in the margins. Teams like Carolina and Colorado are no less (sometimes more!) analytics based than the Leafs.

No GM is magic, but I also don't see the need to bring in a retread GM who hasn't been particularly successful.

Briere is a smart guy, a rink rat, competitive. Maybe he'll turn out to be a shrewd trader. Maybe he'll have a knack for NHL player evaluation, something the Flyers have been lacking.

Or maybe he'll be another average GM, like most are. I'd rather take the risk, with the possibility of reward, than hire an average retread.
yup, i mean retread gms only work for so long eventually you have to go own route of developing your own gms so they can have fresh ideas of from other successful teams like vegas, dallas, carolina, florida that can make this team successful. that's why im liking the move, a different approach rather than spend to cap and going nowhere which alot of retread gms are doing.

I’m old enough to remember the time that people celebrated and knocked Zito for the Panthers getting swept in the second round last year.

Maybe let’s stop building narratives over small sample sizes.

Sss are good when I want them to be.

Other times, I'm going to scold you for using SSS.

Just depends on how I feel in the morning

Last year?! They were dancing on his grave when the Panthers were out of the playoffs this year.

Lmao at some of the people praising Dubas here.

What "analytics" did Zitto use in putting Marc Staal in the top 4?

Better yet, one of Dubas pats on the back was getting Luke Schenn for the playoffs. I would LOVE to se how many Dubas fanboys on here also were Schenn fans too .

One of the first NHL GMs to embrace the public analytical sphere was Chuck Fletcher. It was a landmark NHL endorsement of quantitative hockey analysis. Those two people went on to be one of the most influential people in the private sphere and an NHL AGM.

I would not call him popular among the analytical types around here.
@JojoTheWhale wrote that article better for me last year.

He said go to games with Thatcher Venmo to see the other teams.

The rare case where I was correct. Don’t let these dopes ruin things for you or your loved ones.

I thought the coach did that? Staal is dead last in xGF% for the Panthers these playoffs, and he's on a $750k contract, which shows his league value. Teams like their veteran security blankets; it's not revelatory. Zito acquired Chiarot too at a greater cost. File that under Osgood Fielding III saying, "Well, nobody's perfect!" Even the good guys have blinders on at times.

Hockey is a low bar sport when it comes to brain power. Hey, you know who leads the Panthers in ice-time? Forsling and Montour. (Also, you totally contradicted yourself with the Dubas-Schenn line -- is he or is he not an Excel spreadsheet worshipping sicko?)

Every team in every league in every sport worth a damn uses data in bulk. It's done. This is like debating the merits of trench warfare. People with an axe to grind just pick a certain individual target and harp on it to prove a point that the bigger picture refutes.

I don’t care if Dubas used analytics or not.

When you inherit a young core of Matthews, Marner, Nylander, & Rielly, plus substantial cap space, and after 5 years you have won a grand total of one playoff round, same as the lowly ridiculed Chuck Fletcher, then you failed.

I am not touting your GM brilliance & clamoring to put you in charge of the Flyers.

Schenn was actually quite good. Schenn has worked hard to transform his game and stay relevant, working with forwards coaches like Oates to learn more skills. Schenn now is not the Schenn we had.

I was a fan of adding Schenn for that reason.

I truly hope you recognize the massive levels of hypocrisy going on here.

Only to a degree. I think more context is needed and focusing solely on series wins is a bad analysis.

You'd take Holland over Dubas right? If you don't, then you must agree
That's a non-sequitir.

In Dubas' situation, one playoff round win in five years is a failure.

Inherited? He was there working on their scouting and development.
