Seriously? Think about what you're saying.

Besides, Kapanen has some of the most impressive raw skill of any prospect out there. He's the best skater in the organization and has a borderline elite shot/puckhandling skills. He will get his chance this season as the Marlies go-to-forward.

when the leafs traded for Kapanen and I first looked at his highlights, was blown away by his stickhandling in tight spaces and ability to finish through a crowd. Still a chance that he turns studly IMO, trading him right now is a bad idea

And he will , IMO more likely than not, fail miserably in that role just as he has previously failed when given that role internationally or in a pro league team. He shows flashes of absolute brilliance, but for the most part leaves you wondering how he ever got drafted in the first round.

clarify for us - where has he been a go-to guy on a pro league team? In his final year in Finland where he was (in his best year) the 6th highest scoring forward (and more than doubled the offensive output of any other teenage forward on his team in less games), or on the Marlies where he was fighting the depth chart with 10 forwards outscoring him on a team that was the favourite to win the championship all year long? He has not had opportunity yet to get prime minutes on a pro team...probably because until 2 weeks ago, he was still a teenager.

Right handed offensive dmen, seem like a premium in the NHL. Montour seems to get better when the competition gets better.

While I think the original trade is somewhat in the ball park I feel like we would field better options if he was available.

no thanks. we arent trading a former 1st rd pick because he "only" has 40pts in 69 games as an underaged player in the AHL.

I don't see much of a difference offensively between montour/carrick so this doesnt make a whole lotta sense.

we need to see what we have in Kapanen. He will be 20 this year and I wouldnt be surprised if he gets something like 50-60pts in the AHL

Not a fan of either team but i dont understand all the Kapanen trade proposals. Hes a great young piece who eill be very complimentary to all their high skilled guys.

With Marner, Matthews, Nylander, Soshikov, Hyman, Brown, Timashov etc. We have a lot of forward prospects expected to be in the lineup in the next couple years. Moving a good piece in Kapanen for a good defenseman prospect makes sense.

I can see what you're saying, but Hyman is way older and doesn't have the offensive skill of any of the players above. More of a bottom 6

I'm not an insider or anything but I am friends and play hockey with pretty much the whole Gulls staff and management. I can tell you for certain that the Ducks think VERY VERY highly of Montour. He won't be moved unless they're getting someone clearly better than him.

We aren't trading him because of that, we're trading him because a RHD prospect is a much bigger need than another winger prospect. Kapanen is the Leafs 5th best forward prospect, Montour would be Leafs 2nd or 3rd best defence prospect.

Not to mention Leafs have winger prospects that can replace Kapanen in the depth charts like Leipsic

and Kapanen could easily be the best of the non big 3 prospects from that group.

dermott, nielsen, carrick, corrado, valiev, loov.
all 23 or under and projecting as 2nd or 3rd pairing guys.
no need to move a forward with top 6 skill for another offensive dman when we have a player that already fills that role (carrick). 21 pts in 20 games as a marlie.

not to take anything away from montours great rookie year, but usually guys that age are in their 3rd year in the AHL.

Nope.

He turned 20 in April 2014.

For someone with that birth date, 2014-15 would be their first AHL season, 2015-16 their second.

see carrick, connor.
depends on the circumstances. point being he was older than the other rookies, most of whom were born in 1995-1996.

People are pretty rough on Kapanen in here.

He was the youngest player in the entire AHL last year, not really fair to compare him to a prospect 2.5 years older than him.

Ultimately I see him being a Richard Zednik type of player. Talented but streaky.

Except he wasn't.

Is it? Is it really outlandish to place Montour 4th behind Dermott, Zaitsev, Nielson and ahead of Carrick on a possible d depth chart?

Montour was 2nd in the AHL for defenceman scoring. He would be your best or 2nd best defensive prospect, depends on Zaitsev.

Dermott, Nielson, Zaitsev; Carrick has shown great promise but likely slots ahead of him.

Haha, really. Montour would be your best d-prospect, noone is even close. I dont really count zaitsev...
this is some of the worst homer I have ever seen.
