This deal is fair value for both sides but I wouldn't do it from the Leafs perspective.

He put up 0.56PPG last season as a 19-year-old rookie in a North American pro league. KK learned to play the game in Finland on the big ice. It may take longer for certain players to adjust to the ice difference. While his numbers from last year aren't overly impressive, his play steadily improved as the season went on and he was considered by many to be the best Marlies forward in their last few playoff games. As long as there is progression there is hope. People around here are talking like he's a bust that can barely keep a job in the AHL. You're going to see a tremendous jump in his numbers this season as a few key guys from last season have graduated to the Leafs and KK will be the Marlies biggest offensive weapon. He's an extremely tenacious player and a hard worker. Those are two major traits required to be successful.

A full year in the AHL will be extremely beneficial for KK.

I think you're right, he is still moving in the right direction. Also, what happened to us (TML) showing patience with our prospects? We were going to be like the wings, letting guys develop in the AHL for a couple years until they are ready to come up and make an impact. Not every prospect is the Nylander (or better) type. Give the young fella a little time. No need to cast him out for a mystery box.

How is this fair for the Leafs? I still haven't read one post that says why this makes sense for them.

Another poster compared him to other picks in that same round and he is ahead of the curve. Those guys get valued higher for some reason though.

Why would the Leafs give up on a guy with potential to be a first liner, with realistic potential to be a 2nd-3rd line winger, and who played in the AHL as an underager, before he even plays a single game at the normal age of AHL rookies? Especially for another late first?

Development is not linear, the first to the NHL is not the best, some take longer than others. Kapanen hasn't done anything to show he is a bust, just he needs more time.

He's been great this pre-season, the Leafs will give him another year in the AHL, possibly two, before they look to move him. This management team has said they will over cook their prospects time and time again, yet fans on here judge Leaf prospects who don't crack the NHL right away.

This makes no sense at all for the Leafs. They are throwing away their development time for another prospect who is even FURTHER away, and may not even reach a level where he can be an AHL regular like Kapanen.

Just mind boggling.

You've literally gotta be kidding me. Why do leaf fans, and I mean only leaf fans of all the teams in the league, vastly overrate certain players? Sorry but no GM in history of the game would trade a 1st for Kapanen.

E.g. Kapanen is an elite A+ prospect, Jake Gardiner is an absolute surefire top-4 defender with huge upside and he isn't -50 every season (just pretend).

You literally gotta be kidding me, In case you've been living under a rock the past while this site has fans of all teams vastly overrating their players. Look at what Jets fans want for Trouba. Good luck with that. How do you know exactly no team would trade a 1st for Kapanen.

Get off your high horse there big fella.

KK has progressed well for his age and he has a big year of development coming up with a bigger role on the Marlies. At this stage there is no reason to trade him for a late first when he looks like he could be a regular in the NHL as soon as next season.

If the draft pick had a guarantee of getting a guy like Foote, then I'd do it. Only reason at the moment to trade Kapanen, would be to get a RHD with top pairing potential - of course the package would include something in addition to Kapanen.

You're going to have to fight the Avs for that pick. I can't imagine Sakic let's Foote's son get away easily.

Kapanen was the main piece in the Kessel trade. We're not trading him. And people way over rate first round picks, especially late 1st. He is one of the youngest players from his draft year, people need to chill out. Look at golden boy Mantha and his numbers in his 1st AHL season, who was a year older than Kapanen when he played, and managed to have a lower PPG than Kap. Was anyone giving Mantha away for a late 1st round pick?

Yeah. Stupid late 1st picks. Who are you going to draft in the 20's!?

Kapanen is a good prospect, who unfortunately, gets unfairly bashed. A lot of that has to do with the fact that since Nylander did so well in the A, the expectations for every other high end prospect were raised. I mean, Kappy had 25 points in 44 games as a 19 year old rookie in the AHL. That's not as good as the likes of Nylander and Rantanen, but it still compares well to quite a few other highly regarded prospects. It's also important to note, he was playing on a very deep Marlies team, which slotted him lower on the depth chart.

I expect Kappy to have a very good year in the A this upcoming season. He was already a good even strength player last season and now with a lot Leaf prospects from the AHL graduating and a few veterans leaving, Kappy will be slotted higher on the depth chart, and have a lot more power-play time. He'll be one of the players depended on and thus have more opportunities to show how good he is.

Also, Kapanen plays a style that the Leafs really like. He's got nice speed and is a good two-way and possession player. Not to mention, he's already had two nice post draft developmental years. If the Leafs trade him for a late 1st, they'd have to start that cycle all over again.

Thus, I highly doubt the Leafs would trade Kapanen, barring a big overpayment. A late 1st is not that.

Yeah. Stupid late 1st picks. Who are you going to draft in the 20's!?

...Kapanen??? :help:

What would the point be, though?

Kap's already had two years of development. We'd have to restart the process all over again if we trade him for a late 1st.
