So only $2M prorated ?

that's cheaper than most thought he would get.
Looks like there may be some truth to the notion that he knew he wanted to come to Detroit, so there was no reason to overspend.

Maybe it's because I'm much older now but I had a lot more anger for Chelios coming to Detroit.

Kane was a super douche his first handful of years in the league but seemed to have settled down. The last really stupid thing I can think of him doing was his comments on the Kyle Beach thing and if memory serves they weren't nearly as stupid as Toews.

Anyway, I had a lot more dislike for guys like Tootoo and Bertuzzi wearing the Winged Wheel. This one could be fun just for what it does to Hawks fans.

Only team who could overspend Detroit offers, was Buffalo.

And for some reason, Patrick Kane does not want to join that home-town mess.

Florida has something like 1.6M in cap space, NYR had nothing, Dallas had same as Florida at 1.5M.

So if you knew Buffalo is out anyways, the best offer is at ~2.0M range, dropping all contenders out.

2.05M is the final SALARY.
2.75M is the caphit.

So if he's ready by tomorrow, his first game is against the Rangers. If it's not until Thursday, it's against Chicago. And if he's not ready until next week, he kicks things off in Buffalo.

Odds are pretty good that he's opening up against a team that'll boo him pretty loudly.

As was mentioned on the Free Agent Talk forum, this doesn't have a lot of downside risk. Which has Yzerman written all over it.

Best case he plays well and Wings make the playoffs
OR
He plays well but Wings miss the playoffs and flip him at the deadline
OR
He plays like total garbage after his surgery and works his way out of the lineup, but all the Blackhawks fans have to see their boy in the Winged Wheel and decide if they're going to boo him

Unless Yzerman trades someone good to make space, there's not a lot to dislike about this move.

To all the naysayers...

Red Wings way to get Top3 picks:

- Sign UFA Patrick Kane, 1st overall
- Sign UFA Mike Modano, 1st overall
- Trade for Brendan Shanahan, 2nd overall
- Trade for David Legwand, 2nd overall
- Sign UFA Bobby Ryan, 2nd overall
- Trade for Brad Stuart, 3rd overall

Draft lottery?

- Not the answer.

Wings won 2008 Stanley Cup with Dan Cleary as their highest pick at #13 overall.

As others have said above:

Gross.

But as others have also said: I got over Chelios, I'll get over this.

And one year, just $2M actual salary -- that's awesome. He'll want more next year if he shows that he's fully recovered. Hopefully he doesn't want a lot more.

It's basically no-risk outside of the opportunity cost of using that money for another FA signing (highly unlikely) or taking back a cap dump in a trade. This move (and the Berggren call up) gives us the opportunity to see if we have enough depth up front to have an effective 2nd line. The big issue with this team is that we do not have a functional 2nd line and can be extremely easy to gameplan against. With Compher really stepping up and looking like a legit 2C, we can hopefully have someone better offensive than Veleno, Ras or Copp playing on his wing night in and night out.

Plus I have high hopes this can help our stagnant PP.

I will never boo Kaner. He brought us 3 cups. In fact, I'm gonna buy his DET sweater right now just to complete my Kaner jersey collection!

To be fair, I kinda wanted a Arizona Datsyuk jersey. Just for the lulz. So you should do it man, DO IT!

Unless Detroit is in serious contention, my bet is he goes to a contender after this year. This is really a great deal for him. Gets to play with his buddy for a year, prove that he's still got it, and then likely gets to choose one of the top teams to ride into the sunset with.

I'm inclined to believe he'll stick around until he retires if he's still able to play. He's already won 3 Cups... I doubt he's ring chasing at this point in his career.
