Prospect Info: K'Andre Miller (D) - Part IV

I like places like like Natural Stat Trick where I can just go and look at a bunch of numbers. They're not fancy, and honestly the layout isn't great, but it's just numbers. If I don't understand then numbers I can either find an explanation on their site or Google it. I know it's more powerful than that, but that's the kind of thing I like.

There's a reason a place like Fan Graphs absolutely blew up in baseball, to the point where their WAR is one of the most oft-cited even in the press (along with Baseball Reference, who has a similarly dull, bland, numbers-based site). You go there and you can see simple numbers and compare them against other numbers. Maybe there's more nuance to hockey stuff that requires a more advanced presentation? I don't know. But the charts seem like they're designed by people competing to impress the other people who also make charts, and not to actually educate or inform people "on the outside." Very annoying.

Yes.

You’re forgetting the cherry on top, which is the condescending/patronizing “Player x is good at hockey I guess” annotation that comes at the top of the chart, usually in place of where it would be nice to have an actual description of the chart.

There are other elements that can be added. I think we are past the early stages of data and hockey, but it has yet to enter the age of innovation that other industries have when it comes to information. It is rapidly getting better, and will be very interesting to see what the puck tracking technology brings to the table.

I think the single biggest thing preventing more people from fully embracing analytics in hockey is the often terrible charts that are put out there. Someone shits colors all over an X and Y axis or puts together a bar chart with seven layers and it's like...unless you work in data systems and analytics, your chances of understanding the chart are like 5%.

Baseball analytics are much easier because they're almost always just presented as numbers.
So much this.
I'm educated as a computer and electrical engineer and those charts are effing horrendous.

I think people who make the charts get too caught up making them and don't realize that the charts makes sense to them because they have created them and tweaked them and it's just obvious that way and never take a step back and look at it from another perspective and ask whether it's an objectively good chart or not.

BTW, fans always SCREAM at Quinn for player mismanagement - basically around not playing young guys enough.

I think he is starting to mismanage K'Andre Miller. This kid hasn't played 40 games of anything in his career and he's logging 20+. Looks great now and we're all gushing. It won't soon enough.

K'Andre has been our second best player behind Fox. He deserves these minutes and he's rarely on ice for a goal against.

I disagree, this kid definitely has real good skills. But , he puts his teammates in bad positions in his own zone with poor short passing. He doesn't do too well in that part of the game. Other than that he is stellar and will be elite in a couple of years.

I’m very excited about Miller. Other than the first game he has been terrific. Obviously still has things to clean up but he just turned 21 so that’s expected. Looking back it seems like it was the right move to trade up in the 2018. Do you guys think he would have lasted to 26 if we didn’t? I think I remember the Ducks were very interested in him and had the 23rd or 24th pick I can’t remember

The Ducks had the 23rd pick and there were reports that they were going to take him. Minnesota and St. Louis had the 24th and 25th picks, respectively. I don't know if either team would have picked Miller, but it's possible that some other team behind us could have moved into one of those spots and taken him. Either way, I'm just glad we got him.

I think this guy is great

Irony he is playing with Lafrenière who stole him the puck and scored at thw wjc. lolll
yeah but lad is still the better prospect and will be the better player. I see many fans concerned but he had been good just incredibly snakebitten. He honestly should have 3-4 goals right now but had had the worst luck. Either way I’m glad we have both

That 2 on 0 happened because of Miller's speed last night. So much ice, so little time. You get that turnover, and it's an offensive attack the other way with numbers.

I think the coaching staff needs to find better ways to use their match-ups 5v5 with Miller-Trouba getting minutes with the grunts to shutdown the other teams top guys.

K'Andre IMO has been the best Rangers defenseman this year. It's kind of surprising because last year didn't go that well for him but he's taken to the NHL like a duck to water. Really good size--excellent skating and skills and smart with the puck and he uses his body really well to separate opponents from the puck. I think this kid is going to be a legit 1st pairing guy. He's also likable and easy to root for.

The org has made a couple of things clear. One, they're not committing the captaincy to anybody in the current group of vets. Two, they want their guy to emerge.

This guy stands out.
Eh he’s way too much of the introverted/calm for captaincy imo, I think Laf will be the one to emerge. Panarin would be a great captain if he spoke English better (or didn’t pretend he doesn’t speak it ). One things for certain I don’t think Zibanejad is C material whatsoever

Calm is good. Guys who scream and yell get the A. I want the leader of the team to be a guy who isn't bothered by anything.

Quiet, lead by example types are boring, here in Vancouver for instance I thought Henrik Sedin was a horrible captain for that reason, Kesler should’ve got the C. The Rangers have had too many milquetoast guys who didn’t bring that competitive fire in the playoffs, Hank was that for many years while McDonagh didn’t have a firey bone in his body. I want a Messier kind of captain, I think Lafreniere has the big personality and competitive spirit for it

Fox has been better, defensively and offensively, not a knock on Miller but Fox has played almost perfect in both ends...but Miller is definitely #2.

Then we need to fire Quinn before he loses it.
Going into the past two years I expected Kakko and Laf to be alphas out on the ice. That's what really stood out besides their skill. I don't know if it's a youth thing or a Quinn thing but they seemed like they are held back. Every time Kakko scores it's like he has a million pounds lifted from him. Then he plays 10 mins the next game "despite Quinn's intentions" and gets dejected.

What about Messier for coach to kick the s*** out of everyone lol.

Check out Panarin's play & Lafreniere's individual accomplishments in junior / tournaments, and it's pretty easy to predict the captain will be either Panarin of Lafreniere

I want us to hire Messier just so we can stop talking about it.
