@Hischier and Hughes is on fire. Really hope we get to see Shero take Kakko for the meltdown. Expert opinions are shifting.
Guy is honestly making our entire fanbase look bad. Him and Ijuka have just been embarrassments from the moment the draft order was determined.

Devil fans are leaning hughes and IMO rightfully so. Ijuka clearly has an agenda, but so does Hischier and Hughes. both of them are throwing nonsense in these threads and hoping it sticks.

Ijuka- doesn't watch Hughes play or is potentially one of the worst scouts of all time (literally, everything this guy says about hughes is incorrect- low hockey IQ, not a good skater, just as physically mature as Kakko... etc, hes an idiot.

Hischier and Hughes- paranoid that since Kappo is having a great WC the devils might go the other way. throwing nonsense out there as well.

We can all agree that these threads would be significantly better without either of their input, but homers will homer.

Hughes makes more sense for the devils in the end, even if Kakko has caught up as a prospect (again IMO 6 good games dont change 2 years of scouting) ... unless its a fin talking about a fin

voted Hughes for the simple fact that he's a center... the Devils are very weak down the middle... that said, if they draft Kakko I won't be disappointed

This point remains silly as Kakko has been equally dominant in the Finnish league, it's not as if he suddenly emerged now.
He has

But it never was at the level Jack was at in his respective juniors games

That is why Kakko was never at Jacks level (until recently where fickle minded folk have changed over or if you had them 50/50)

It makes no more sense to compare the Finnish league to junior games in North America than it does to compare the AHL to junior games in Finland.

Doesn't stop anyone from comparing someone who is playing 4th line vs someone who is being counted on to carry the offense.

They have completely different roles for their teams in this tournament. The USNDT pretty much came out and said that Hughes is here to learn and take it all in, not really contribute, which is obvious when you see how he is being utilized.

Kakko has been fantastic this tournament and I would't be upset if the Devils take him 1OA but I don't think it is fair to Hughes to judge him based on this tournament alone.

Scouts aren't as fickle as the average hfboards poster, thankfully.

Yet someone has to do it because how else are scouting lists put together
Hint: They're not put together by requiring Liiga players to dominate the league at the same rate as USNTDP players dominate USHL for equal rankings.

It is about how the players play, not production.

Nobody worth a damn has said anything in the last month. However, those a notch below the true insiders have indicated changing opinions.

There is video of the Devils room discussing both Hughes and Kakko, that’s about all we’ve seen. What’s the point in discussing Kakko at all if this is already wrapped?

Also, are you just going to ignore the proof of your fabricated statement earlier in this thread haha?

Umm I don’t think this is any sort of indication what so ever that the Devils haven’t made up their mind yet. They are kinda good at their jobs and have been doing it for a career for decades. Yet you think that by even mentioning os discussing options is a sign of indecision ? I call it just doing their job as covering all the bases and sceneros .
People read too much into every minute detail .
Do you think they would have a podcast that shows:
“ ok , well , so we are taking Hughes no matter what , ok that’s a wrap . What’s for lunch . Sorry about the boring podcast . Did you guys watch Game of Thrones on Sunday!?”

Also sick of people gushing over Kakko over paying better (in an entirely different role )than Hughes for 5 or so games this tournament and insinuating that Kakko is the better choice based off that.

One spurt of Kakko playing better than Hughes right now does not erase 2+ years of scouting opinions and rankings.
It’s a very very hard decision to make and my own personal opinion is that I’d prefer Hughes over Kakko because of Hughes ability for/at :
Zone entries
Skating ability
Position (C)
Ability to dictate the speed of the game .
Not saying Kakko does not do the same but Hughes does it better in my opinion.Huges can drive a line and make players around him better while I think Kakko more of a player that is better suited for board work and taking the puck himself and the play lives or dies with him.

This .
On a side note , I love both prospects. Can’t go wrong with either but sucks that pressure is in the Devils to make the right choice.
Only thing is , it will takes years to see who the better player is , and even yet it might be too close to call.
I just like how Hughes dictates the pace when he has the puck and makes his teammates much better , more so than Kakko.

You are just speculating. I don’t know. You don’t know. Signs point to Hughes. Opinions are shifting to where it’s no longer unanimous in the hockey community. That’s all there is.

Right now I think being good at your job involves exploring every factor. The kids are still playing. Professionals make decisions with every fact they can get.

Yes, he was great in the Finnish league. Great enough to STILL be number 2 before this tournament... think on it

Devils Director of Amateur Scouting Paul Castron puts the process together when it comes to assessing the draft talent pool. The scouts recently wrapped up their amateur scout meetings but as of right now, the slots one and two remain open.
"Two years ago, nobody knew (who the Devils were drafting) until the day of," Castron told Matt Loughlin and Amanda Stein during a recent recording of the Devils Road to the Draft Podcast. I don't think it'll be much different this time around. We'll do all our homework and due diligence right down to our last day. The book will get finalized the night of the draft."

DRAFT: Castron helps lead Devils to big draft decision

Could just be optics but they say they haven't decided.

And I believe them - why would they be in a rush to decide when they still have more than a month to go and the season isn't even over? There's also still the scouting combine and player interviews, which play a role in determining a team's draft board. I would also imagine that is not finalized until the days leading up to the draft. Shero and Castron may be leaning towards one of the two (not necessarily the same one each just yet), but it would be foolish for them to have locked in a decision at this point.

I voted Hughes, but I don't really care who the Devils wind up selecting as they're going to come away with a hell of a player either way. I'm still pumped they won the draft lottery and trust Shero, Castron and the scouting staff will do their due diligence and select the player they believe will have the better career and could help the Devils the most.

Well it looks like more than half of you missed the point of this thread I posted. Once again it wasn't about who you think is better but who you think the Rangers would have drafted #1 overall if they had the pick instead of the #2 overall....whatever..the thread will end in a day or so.

Looks like Kakko is winning and winning big. I believe Gorton would pick Kakko had he had the #1 overall anyways over Hughes.

Yeah Kakkos historic goal scoring in Liiga as an 18 year old isn’t on par with Hughes and the stacked USDP team. OKKKKKKKK

@Hischier and Hughes and there it is!

Good scouting departments take all the information they can before making a decision.

NO! They pick Hughes because Shero knows his dad :sarcasm:
