Weber is-was a unicorn. Ghule Will be very good if he continu His progression, but cmon he is 19yo.

Weber was 19 too at some point, i'd imagine.

Habs fans have PTSD that nothing good can happen with our prospects anymore

Who knows, he could be better than Weber.

Nope, I don't agree. He's probably already equal or better then Kulak yet nobody suggest sending Kulak to je AHL to get better.

This thing about "learning" in the AHL applies more to players who need to work on major aspects of their game. Guhle already has NHL level defense and the offense can be developed. He won't run the powerplay, but he can learn a lot faster playing with Petry then some AHL slug.

I agree, there is not much of a track record that correlates AHL development into stronger players at the NHL level. All of the top prospects typically bypass the AHL and make the leap to the NHL directly. Just take a look at the top scorers in the league, or even more specifically, the top Dman scorers in the league and tell me how many were a product of development at the AHL level. Devon Toews is certainly one example, but they are few and far between.

Pavel Datsyuk was 19 at some point too and I would't compare any prospect except maybe a 1st overall pick special talent to him. No one says Guhle won't be good, but comparing him to one of the best D of his generation is putting the bar WAY to high

Personally I'll be disappointed if he doesn't turn out to be the next Bobby Orr!
Is this suppose to be sarcastic or funny?

Bobby Orr is consired by some as the best player to have ever laced them up and had a 1.4PPG career average, with 4 season of over 30 goals. 8 norris, calder, 2 Art Ross, 2 Conn Smyth, 3 Hart.

Chara has 1 Norris trophy and average 0.41PPG career wise.

I think there is quite a gap between those two. Don't see how a Ghule/Chara expectation might be excessive.

Can we just set the bar to something more reasonable than HHOF'ers? I dunno... Jay Bouwmeester? Or Ryan McDonagh?

(McDonagh probably should've won the Conn Smythe last season)

If you don't see how comparing a 19-year-old prospect to a 1st ballot Hall of Famer might be excessive then you are either trolling or setting yourself up for some very serious disappointment.

Guhle could become an undisputed #1 defenceman and still not be anywhere close to what you're hoping for.

I mean, drafting the next Ryan McDonagh at #16 would be all in all very good all things considered, and he's even not what I'd considered an undisputed #1 D-Men!

He'll need to work on his slapshot A LOT, if he's the next Chara.
You know what Chara-lite means? It doesn't imply that he is the next Chara.

I might have confused some with the term light, I obviously meant lite.

The definition of lite is a slang term for light that means having less substance than something else.

In fact, when looking at McDonagh's draft, there's a very good point to be made that he's amongst the five best players of his crop (only Patrick Kane is clearly better; Jamie Benn and PK Subban are arguably better than him at this point but they're also clearly past their prime, while McDonagh is still adding; and I'm prefering McDonagh to Pacioretty and Couture at this point, though I could see how someone wouldn't... but, barely; I don't think Voracek, JVR, Perron, Simmonds, Shattenkirk and Muzzin have anything close to claim -- all of these not being equal in anyway : someone like Voracek is obviously closer than Muzzin).

It would be great, but if the hype train takes on too much speed there will be plenty who will think that is not enough.

Take your Bouwmeester comparison for example, objectively he had a fantastic career yet there are still many who feel he was a disappointment because he was hyped up as a potential star as a prospect.

Jay-Bo was also picked way earlier than Guhle.

That means something but it's not the deciding factor. Draft ranking means nothing in the years that follow it. Guhle's potential is real but he has work to do. Just like Lafreniere.

Weber quote... "You will get what you get from the work you put into it". That's what development is after you are drafted and turn pro. Guhle's ability is there but he has to keep improving. Potential is potential but you have to be obsessive with putting the work into it to get the best results from your potential.

But players picked as high as Lafrenière or J-Bo have a higher bar to clear to not be called a disappointment, compared to Guhle.

I mean, Guhle could end up being a no3 for 900 games and it would be decent.

Expectations are higher but if you ask Guhle, he don't care about where he was drafted. He wants to be among the best. Think about it... We seem to think we are experts at ranking 15-17 year olds and how we can project that forward into 18-20+ years. The growth from these kids is tough business to project so with me, the only thing you get with higher picks is you get to get that guy that has a good track at 17/18. But we seem to project that forward where they should be better than someone drafted 16th. It doesn't always work that way

If Guhle is dominate at the WJC, the expectations are higher than it was last year or the year before. Reality. I think the growth from 18-20+ is higher than 15-17 years in many cases.

Suprised nobody mentioned Big Bird.

He definatly has mean streak, leadership, skating, vision but not sure about how good until he's a season in the NHL. I read he has s canon so i don't know where this weak shot comes from.

Minimum he's a better Chiarot which would be a disappointment. At best, Weber 2. Fine by me and every Hab fan on the planet...that's not drunk.

Sure, he COULD. but i mean, it a recipe for disaster to have those exceptation ...

Won't disagree with that,

- I was just saying that before all that, Weber was just a young gun with lowered expectation too. No one saw him becoming that dominant neither and comparing him to let's say a Stevens, people would have the said the same thing ( Stevens is a Unicorn, Weber is just 19 )

Comparing 2 players is always tricky, they can have the same style, but no one will end up as a copy paste of someone else. It never happened, i don't know why it's still a thing. I'd prefer to say that he has the POTENTIAL to have the impact of said player on his team.

Fans also compared KK to Barkov at some point.
