If kakko can’t play by the last five games l, it would best to kill his season and let him heal completely.. offer him 2 mill for 3-4 yrs..due to his injuries

Based on what gallant is saying I'd expect to see kakko practicing this weekend. playing next week probably.

Did we ever get an actual diagnosis? Like is it ligament, is it a sprain, is it a broken bone?

Probably not. He will be ready. If it were a lower body, maybe I'd be with you on it.

Playoff experience will be very important for him, and the team going forward.

The Rangers dream press release would go something like this:

"Kaapo Kakko has been placed on IR due to an injury to the Kaapo Kakko sustained during play of a sport within the last 21 years."

He and Rooney were both skating before practice today.
Rangers MO seems to be that they want injured guys to skate on their own until they are just about ready to enter the lineup. 1 practice with the team, then back in.

I feel like 1 practice with the team isn't going to be enough. He's been out for more than 3 months. He's probably going to be wearing a non contact jersey for a practice first then a contact practice or two.

Yes, otherwise it messes with the line rushes and combos the coaching staff is trying to decide on before the next game.

But as Crypto mentioned (and hes probably right) he may need a practice or two with the non contact jersey to get up to game speed.

He was taken out of the lineup on 1/22 - which is about 11 weeks ago.

He had an 8 game stretch back in late Nov where he went 3G, 5A, 8P, +6 and averaged over 20m TOI.

That's like adding a second Copp to the forward lines before the playoffs. Just need his ass back in the lineup.

If they need to take their time with him so be it, but with 11 games left its gotta be soon to get him back to a good level

Trying to stay positive.

Gallant has said he’s hopeful Kakko and Rooney will get to play before the first round of the playoffs begin in May, but that doesn’t mean it will happen.

“They might play one, who knows?” he said. “I’m not worried about that. They’ve skated hard, they’ve worked hard for a while. Not an issue. When they’re ready, they’re ready.”

Well that doesn't sound very good. Coach doesn't sound confident at all.

It doesn't. But could that also reads as Gallant 1. being super cagey and 2. getting tired of being asked about it. The way he said "they were out there, you just weren’t out there early enough" following practice kind of indicates the tone of his second quote.

At least that's my positive spin.

Have to say, this Rangers administration/coach is the most closed of any that I can recall. The news on injuries has been trending down over recent seasons, but this has gotten ridiculous. Seems like an area ripe for exploitation in betting circles and insider knowledge, though to be fair individual players have perhaps less impact on an NHL team than they might in some other sports....outside goaltending at least.

As for Kakko and to a lesser extent Rooney, I do hope they'll get a few games to get their legs back. While Kuznetzov came back from a long layoff to dominate in the playoffs, these guys are not exactly the same sort of player as he is. On the plus side, they should be plenty rested especially if the Rangers manage to win a round or two, but of course they're likely to be rusty. For Kakko this is likely going to be more impactful than to someone like Rooney.

They should start him and Rooney on the 4th line (with Motte) when they are back and let them ease back in. The other three lines are working. Let them get back up to game speed with less minutes and a less offensively demanding role. That’s a very good line 4 which will come in handy during the playoffs too.
