Also, the talk about how we don’t have any options NOW. Like sure, the borderline criminal negligence took part under the watch of DQ and Gorton, but it’s not true that we don’t have options.

Gallant could say, listen, “if we are to win a cup and become a real contender over the coming 3-5 years — we need these kids to develop. They can’t don that in a depth role. We need to change up the PP. It might mean 4 or even like 8 less goals over 82 games, but it’s worth it. We will also make changes 5 on 5. Kreider and Mika won’t be seeing as much of each other as they are used to. It’s 1 step back to take 2 steps forward.”

Larry Brooks should be calling for Gallant’s head for not doing it. The article should in typical Brooks fashion set out how GG might seem to be too good to be truth, but how he in fact should be sacked instantly for ruining a 1st and 2nd overall pick. The fact that Brooks wasn’t saying just that 3 years ago when David Quinn with the approval of all pundits thought that all these kids needed was to learn to play defense, does show how little he knows about the game. But one, two or even three wrong does not make a right.
He's only coached the two of them for one season, a season in which the team achieved excellent regular season and playoff success.

Wasn't he dominant in the last preseason as well? I think he takes another step forward this season but it will probably be a nominal one. Of course I'd love to be proven wrong but I'd hesitate to extrapolate anything from these meaningless games

Haha. Love when people give some response like this. It's like they didn't even watch last year. The kids were great in spite of the coach. Kakko goes on a long point streak with Panarin. Gets moved off the line because "the coaches were bored". Kid line is our best in the playoffs, minutes remain the same. Game 6 and we need to shake things up. Change lines 1 and 2 that weren't working? Nope. Bench Kakko.

Forgive me if I don't give GG credit for them. It's because he doesn't deserve it. Did the team play hard for him? Yes. That's seperate from his "work" with Laf and Kakko. Yesterday he admitted that the kid line was the only good one. If that continues and he rewards them on the ice, all is forgiven. I don't wanna hear GG fanboys giving him credit for Kakko and Laf improving all year. NOPE. Anything they do is because they got better. Kakko on another continent
Before you call out others as fanboys.......maybe change your username.:laugh::laugh:

Fake news. Players don’t develop on their own.
Really?

Coaches determine if a player will be successful?

Coaching make all-stars like Fox, Panarin, and Shesterkin?

Coaches fail with fringe NHLers like Gauthier and McKegg?

Interesting you would refer to it as "fake news".

Rant. But why do we give soooooo many 6-8 year overpay deals to all sorts of old free agents but never to our young guys with legitimate potential?

Like zib should be about to FINISH his previous contract instead of it being a short sighted 5 year deal like it was.

Chytil or kakko should be on long term deals.

We did it with fox and hank so far. Two players so elite that any normal fan would've done the same.

It just annoys me to see goodrow with 3.5 m over 6 years of badly overpaid decline and 4th line. Could've gone to extending the young kids. Or trocheck with SEVEN. Kreider and zib. Sure, theres room for one or two of these guys. But not all 4 of them. Not at the expense of of failing completely to lock up youth in what was a rebuild.

Throw an extra couple mil to lockup young guys who have good chances to be overpaid at first but then huge bargains for 3-5 years as they reach their potential.

This organization has nearly zero foresight. I'm pretty concerned about cap space and where the team is headed in just two seasons with all these aged guys annihilating a huge chunk of the cap, preventing us from signing youth.

The only thing that alleviates concern is knowing how mind bogglingly stupid gms have been when trading for guys like Stepan.

Very different circumstances tho.

A hard cap and constantly recovering from old mistakes.
We couldn’t give Mika 8 years because we only had room for 6m, we had to buy out shattenkirk because hank wouldn’t retire or accept a trade.
It’s the cab getting kicked over and over.
Also Kakko, Laf and miller should all be signing 3-4 year deals not 8, because they haven’t actually proved anything and it’s in their best interest to sign a bridge. It also makes the 3rd contract far better because it takes them through their prime and they could get one more big deal.

Coaching has a lot to do with whether players are successful.

Coaching obviously matters when players are kids. By the time they get to the NHL, you pretty much know what you've got.

Which coaches have made players better in the NHL?

Which have failed?

Can you offer any proof for what you're alleging?

And of course coaches have made players better in the NHL, that’s a silly thing to argue against.

The degree might be worth debating over but if you are saying no player develops with good coaching in the NHL you are just wrong obviously on the face of that comment.

And when you have 18 year olds coming in they are not finished products.

Do I have evidence? Yes, Benoit Allaire.

All GMs eventually get snagged by cap issues if they're there long enough.

TB was just forced to get rid of Palat and McDonagh because of money. They might have some young guys ready to step in, but more likely, they won't be as good this season.

They could still win it all, but their chance of doing so, imo, is less likely.

I think Dolan is the biggest reason the Rangers are currently having cap issues.

Exactly a bunch of neophyte arm chair quarterbacks.
I especially love "X is such a bad GM because he couldn't get more in return for player Y."

Maybe that's because there's a counterparty who's looking to maximize his own return and isn't about to give away assets out of the goodness of his heart. In the end, the scouts and the finance guys (who make cap / budgeting forecasts) determine the success of a GM; a negotiator is nothing unless he correctly assesses the value of his assets, the values of his counterpart's assets, and the current and resulting states of his finances. And that is no easy task.

Honorable mention goes to "Why are they paying player X so much money and / or over such a long term?" And, again, the answer is simple: because player X wouldn't have signed otherwise. This isn't a charity. We're not giving away cap space for some humanitarian endeavor. (The question, if anything, should be: why did the team choose to pursue player X, knowing the present state of the team as well as possible future scenarios?)

GMs to me look like hedge fund managers; they all want to make money but are usually nothing without the quants / researchers / traders underneath them who spot the opportunities.

You made a statement without giving examples or reasons for your opinion. I asked for any evidence to back it up.

I don't see any way of verifying your belief. If you do, you're free to offer it up.

You really don't think NHL coaches help their players develop at all?
