Yeah it's OK as a fan to have an honest critique of a player but when so many so called fans constantly criticize a 19 year old even when he seems to be coming around and showing progress, that just tells me they are not fans at all.

"He sometimes is in the wrong place, he needs to go to Laval".

Ridiculous on its face, for at least two reasons.

First, we should ask if the AHL is more forgiving on players in the wrong place? If so, he must NOT go there! He does not need to get reinforcement or better results from playing wrong.

Second, how many other forwards are seen going to the wrong places??? SEVERAL. Is anyone suggesting to send Anderson or Newhook to Laval? Right now, Slaf is a middle six player. Let him keep learning to get better by getting his reps at the NHL level.

I think the chemistry he is developing with Caufield is vital. I hope they stay together.

Here is a thought from an amateur- why is our most well rounded center playing on the 3rd line and our 3rd line center is playing on the 2nd line?
I think putting Monahan with Caufield and Slaf is such an obvious thing to do.

Dvorak should be with Gallagher and Pearson. Either Suzuki or Monahan should be with Caufield and Slafkovsky, the other with Newhook and Anderson.

You could honestly make a case for Anderson in the AHL. He has absolutely stunk the place out to start this season. The reason nobody mentions those players going to the AHL is because of age and level of growth gained from it. Newhook is young but he’s at the point where he needs to sink or swim in this league.

Yes please, send Anderson to the AHL!
that will never happen, or his agent won't let it, I could see a trade being demanded before that. Is he just not connecting with the coaching staff? Its still early in the season, everyone knows he is a streaky player.Having a bad streak right now, but he is doing stuff away from the puck thats doesn't necessarily involve scoring? Maybe i am being too optimistic.

bolded part: I saw some media scrum notes pre-season where Anderson apparently said he didn't understood anything to Marty's concepts. So I think that's a big part of it.

I was joking about the AHL too, but he shouldn't be on the top 6 or PP1 and my problem with it have nothing do with his lack of scoring (he's actually getting a lot of chances lately, it's just not going in). I said yesterday in the post-game thread that they were developing Anderson too and that wasn't a joke. Anderson is trying to become a finesse/cycling player instead of a crash and bang one and he just doesn't have the tools for it.

Anyway, that's not the Anderson's thread.

Thread rules got it , not connecting with MSL vision agree with that.

Remember that internet meme, What Colour is This Dress? That's Slafkovsky. Look at him one way and you see potential and emerging talent; look at him the other way and you see a floundering bust.
He’s a 1OA. He has some crude high-end skills. He has some glaring deficiencies notably in point production. It’s a perfect storm.

Sure, but is he wearing a black and blue dress, or is it white and gold?

Seriously... a perfect storm? Not sure what that means. I've been objective about the kid – until recently he looked overwhelmed with the puck. His progress was so incremental you needed an atomic microscope to measure it. And as I mentioned a few days ago, he needed to start putting up real points. Point production is, above all, the job of an NHL winger. I repeated that unless something shifted soon, he should be sent to the AHL.

Luckily, I've started seen concrete signs of improvement. Less panic. More thought. Better execution. He's still far from where we want him to be and – most important – his improvement must lead to further improvement. I stated I expect him to have 10 points by year-end; to me, that will represent concrete progress. Let's remember this kid is at the very beginning of his story. As long as he's on the right road, it doesn't matter if it takes him a little longer to arrive.

He’s passing into skates when he shouldn’t and there’s some other things, but I’m starting to see some of the things that made him top of the class of his draft year. That’s really all I was asking for. I hope this kid can put it together. We can’t afford to bust on picks like this if we want the rebuild to be a success.

Shoot calisse.

Not only does he need to shoot, but he needs to drive the net. Make a move to the inside, stop going outside. This is something he did all the time in Liiga too. Give up space to the defender instead of taking space.

His first goal in the NHL was an absolute beauty piss-missile in the middle of the ice.

He will, but its gonna take longer in the NHL and he might not end up as high as he could if he was developped properly. That ship has sailed now though, as he clearly is comfortable away from the puck, and aside from his defensive play in the Dzone, he's a positive player even with his offensive growing pains.

He looks like he belongs right now. He’s a very interesting case study. Production isn’t there even playing with top line players but that isn’t all his fault. He’s keeping an interesting topic threw an otherwise boring rebuild with not a lot of highs.

Looking forward to when Slaf's strength matches is body size. He will be a beast!
Monday Basu's article had some quotes from an anonymous NHL scout who was at the Sunday game and the scout was saying that Slaf wasn't yet playing with "heaviness" and learning to do so is actually what takes time with big player. It's more learning to use it, than gaining strength.

It’s funny you mention Arber who is three years older than Slafkovsky, and who also only really developed a little later than most prospects. At Slaf’s age Arber was overlooked by every nhl team.

It’s still early
My issues are drafting him 1st overall and keeping him in the NHL when he's clearly not ready. Arber got an overage year in OHL after signing with Montreal so I think he's actually a good example how development doesn't really happen by getting reps at a level you aren't ready at.

Hence why a big player takes more time than a smaller one!
