If we picked up Thornton, it would allow the Rangers to play one of Stepan or the aforementioned Thornton on the second line - and that isn't good news for teams playing against us!

Not sure it's very realistic at this stage, though.

Honestly, I don't even know if I'd say that - this division as a whole is still pretty unimpressive. Even if we do barely sneak in, I could easily see us getting through a round or two. With Hank and McD, we will always have a chance.

The division?? How about the whole conference outside the Bruins? I think every team in our conference besides Boston and the NYR's(and maybe the BJ's) have taken steps backwards the last two seasons.

It's just tough to predict anything now. Team that finishes the season is always different than the one that starts the season let alone the one on July 2nd.

We say this every time we bring in a big name, and every time we end up with one effective line not two.

How is Joe Thornton a vanishing act who chokes? Do you bother to look at his numbers before you spew this BS? Throughout his playoff career he has averaged .757 ppg.

He is on a team that for some reason can't win the big game, pretty much any big game. Unfortunately, when you're the best player on a team such as that, you're going to receive a good deal of criticism.

I think some of it should be warranted. Is he a choker himself? Probably not, but he is on a team that is currently perceived to be the biggest in the NHL.

We're going to be the oldest team in the NHL. That's not a recipe for success.

Woah horsie, slow down.

I didn't say I wanted Thornton, nor that I am happy about having a team that needs a steady supply of depends. I was just opining on Thornton's choker label.

So much doom and gloom around here.... And then people are getting into arguments about it all. Everybody needs to take a step back and breathe. Do I love the moves we made? No. Am I willing to take a wait and see approach with them? Yup.

Losing B. Boyle hurts a bit as he has played a big time role with our 4th line/PK and seems to elevate his game in the playoffs. However, he didn't seem to be content staying in that role so off to Tampa he went.

Stralman seems to have wanted a contract to give him the stability he hasn't had yet. He has a wife and 3 kids. Maybe he didn't want to keep raising them in the NYC area. Maybe the Rangers didn't want to go 5 years on a deal. It's possible the Rangers believe that some of the kids will be ready within the 2 years that Dan Boyle is signed and they don't want to block their movement. I understand that you "can trade" someone later, but maybe that's not the route the Rangers wanted to go. Maybe they were thinking about 2-3 years down the road when more important players need a new contract. We will need to replace MSL at some point. Stralman played very well for us on the backend and moved the puck well. Dan Boyle is older and probably not the defenseman he once was. Still had 36 points last year with 18 of them coming on the power play. I'm willing to wait and see what happens here. I think he can be a solid second pair guy with us next to Staal and really help our PP.

Tanner Glass? Yeah, I've got nothing. Everybody says he sucks, but I don't know enough about him to have an opinion. AV likes him, believes he can help our team and play a role on the ice. I'm willing to trust the guy who brought the Rangers to the finals.

All the other signings can only help our depth in Hartford or maybe they can find lightning in a bottle and contribute with the big club. Maybe some of the kids are ready to make a real impact. Fast, Lindberg, Miller, Hrivik, Kristo, Duclair.... there will be some internal options.

I'm willing to have conversations about all of this, and will not resort to calling people names or insinuating they're wrong if they have opinions. I have mine. I am choosing to trust the men employed to know talent better than me.

And for the longest time we were one of the youngest teams in the NHL. Did that win us a cup? No. There is no surefire recipe for success. The only thing being an older team ensures is that our window for winning the cup is on its way out. Doesn't mean we can't still win. We came two horrendous calls and a few inches away from possibly winning the cup.

Looks like a worse team on paper, no question. But, it's still July 2 and things will change.

Also, I have a hard time putting stock into some posters whining about how bad this team looks compared to last years after they whined last year about how bad that team looked too.

So much this

The Rangers went all-in with the win-now stuff with the MSL trade, and it almost worked.

They still want to win now, but they are pretty much forced to play the kids due to the cap crunch. Seems like a conflict of interest, no?

I don't know if conflict of interest is the right wording. It's definitely a bit if mismanagement, but I'm not going to hit the panic button unless we roll into October without making further changes. I just can't champion the youth movement either considering it would be a poorly timed one.

They're not forced in until they're forced in.

Maybe some do earn it. Maybe they don't and cheap placeholders are bought in.

It's july 2.

I realize that, which is why I'm not writing 5 paragraph long rants about it. Simply stating why people's opinions may have changed and why not everyone who was hoping for youth is pleased about why the youth is penciled in for now.

Hard to decipher that Rangers are better today than a week ago, but who knows how it will play out.

What I did learn in this free agency is that McPhee may be the worst GM in the game, Florida isn't even trying to put together a winner, and that Yzerman has done a phenomenal job in Tampa. I think that aside from Boston, they have the best roster to make a run at the Cup from the East for the next couple of seasons.

Oops.

Left out that AV is now certainly putting his brand on the Rangers roster. Hopefully he can learn how to coach 3rd periods in big games.

Is a fired guy considered for that award?

Whether some of you like it or not, there is a youth movement going on with this team.

I don't think you can expect more than 2, maybe 3 rookies, tops in your line up... but that would make 5-6 "rookies" in 2 years coming in as regulars. That's 20-25% of a team. Let's say that trend continues for the year after this too... 7-9 rookies on a group of 20... nearly half.

Kreider, Zucarello, and Talbot played their first "full" nhl seasons last year.
Miller was up and down. Consider him a regular for next year.

We have 3 holes: 3c, 3LW, 4RW. Miller is on the 3rd line, likely at the center position.

Doesn't look like we can sign anyone else of substance to fill those spots in. Those 3 spots are going to rookies.

Miller, Lindberg, Fast, Haggerty, that kid Mueller, the Bourque brothers, Kristo, Duclair... they're all going to have a fair shake at spots.

Not to mention if we go down with an injury or two on the blue line... who else are we going to turn to? Of course, more rookies - like Allen and McIlrath. Next year? We likely see a Skjei sighting.. Duclair, Tambellini, Buchnevich (who everyone hails is the best of that bunch) could all get shots. A year later? That Iverson kid, maybe other prospects who we've acquired.

And before that? These last 2-4 years has seen us promote McD, Stepan, and Hagelin. All young guys.

Whether we want it, or not, this team's future is in its youth. Not all (or even many) of the kids we gush about will make the team, but there will invariably be many spots and opportunities for these kids to come in and become regulars.

But in regards to the next 2 years specifically, look for 5-6 prospects to come up and be relied on as regulars. The trick will be for Vigneault to put them in positions to succeed, like he did with Kreider and Zucarello this year.
