The shoulder (glenohumeral is a complex suspended joint. Face offs can put an unnatural torque on the shoulder, which might not be anticipated (reduces ability to brace correctly). I can see why a player is cleared to play with a precaution of not taking face offs until some rehabilitation milestone is met. We don’t know what the specific injury was, presumably something to do with the rotator cuff (which is four muscular tendons that essentially are what holds the humeral head in place within the shoulder). It’s a guess though.
Like many, I’m still a bit nervous watching him play, I hope the non-surgical option was well-advised, without increased risk of subsequent injury.
