Looked like Manson just put his stick in position to defend himself against Boeser's cross checks and then Boeser rammed his face into the stick. Manson's stick wasn't even elevated past like, chest level.

Not looking and at his chest, I get that you should be aware of putting your stick into another person's face but it's really hard to say this is more than a standard high stick, double minor for blood.

Yeah this is a bit of a nothingburger. Manson wasn't even looking at him. Penalty for sure, but definitely not a major under the rules as written.

Manson literally wasn't even looking at him. Absolute farce call. Should have been maximum 2 minutes to Manson -- and 2 minutes to Boeser for the typical embellishment.
Serious question: if Boeser embellished, how would that be “typical”? Haven’t really seen complaints about him being a diver so this seems like a weird take.

Yeah. Clearly was a penalty but two mins is plenty. The bigger story is the endless run of awful officiating. The league is a complete and utter shit show.

If you cross-check someone in the head you will get a 5-minute major. The NHL rule is more open-ended leaving it up to the ref to determine severity. But at all other levels of play in Canada it is an automatic major penalty and a game misconduct for head contact for a cross-check.

Here is Hockey Canada's rule

Rule 9.2 (b)
A Major penalty and Game Misconduct penalty for Head Contact must be assessed to any player who strikes an opponent with a cross-check above the normal height of the shoulders. Please refer to Rule 7.6 – Head Contact for details.

Are we then surprised that in the NHL they call a cross-check to the head a major? Honestly, I think the NHL rule is a bit vague and they should have it just like the slew-footing penalties where it's an automatic major. But I don't see how people really have a major issue with this. It's a hit to the head ofc it's going to get called a major.

Yeah Im still surprised that brought a game misconduct. Should have been offsetting minors with maybe a double minor in there.

Boeser is hardly known for flopping, but there was some heavy ragdoll physics going on there.

The problem is/was that once a major is called, it can be reviewed but it can 'only' be reduced to a 2 min penalty or remain a 5 min. Because Boeser was bleeding it's an automatic 4 min penalty ... but ... that wasn't one of the options that the officials had. So, because the 2 min option was no longer there, they were forced to stay with the major.

The rule change almost got things right when they gave officials the opportunity to review majors to make sure that they actually did see what they thought that they did. Unfortunately, it didn't go far enough to give the officials the flexibility to actually call the infraction that happened rather than handcuffing them with an either/or option.

This was one rediculous call out of many brutal calls tonight. Manson didn't deserve a major, and Colorado/Vancouver didn't deserve half of their calls either. It's too bad, it was s good game but could of been an amazing game if the zebras would of just let the two teams play.
